May 30, 2025
Sound of Ruby, one of Saudi Arabia's first and longest-running rock bands, have just released 'Jaxx Invasion', their first official live album, and are currently working on a four-LP project featuring over 30 new tracks.
This new phase follows a string of recent releases - 'Rock Puffs' in 2022 and 'Betamax' in 2024 - which marked their return after a long hiatus. Now, the band is entering one of its most active and creative periods yet.
Formed in the Eastern Province in the 1990s by vocalist and composer Mohammad Al Hajjaj, Sound of Ruby helped shape Saudi Arabia's underground rock scene. Despite lineup changes over the years, the group has stayed true to its raw, DIY ethos. Guitarist Nader Al Fassam and producer/multi-instrumentalist Kamal Khalil have long been part of the band's core, and drummer Faris Al-Shawaf recently joined, continuing the legacy of his brother, Talal.
Blending punk, noise, and local influences, Sound of Ruby's music draws from American acts like Black Flag and The Butthole Surfers, while also referencing Saudi folk artists like Fahad Bin Saeed and Bashir Shannan.
Beyond the music, the band played a key role in building Saudi's alternative scene. In the 2000s, Hajjaj and Khalil launched S.A. Metal, one of the country's first online forums for heavy music, and organized underground gigs that laid the groundwork for future scenes.

Submissions Open for the RSIFF's 48-hour Film Challenge

Applications are open to Saudi nationals and residents aged 18 to 25 with a submission deadline of June 15th, 2025. The Red Sea International Film Festival has opened submissions for its annual 48-hour Film Challenge, inviting aspiring filmmakers across Saudi Arabia to push the boundaries of storytelling. Applications are now open and will close on June 15th, 2025. The challenge is open to Saudi nationals and residents aged 18 to 25. Teams must include two to five members. While all experience levels are welcome, including first-timers, the team leader (who should also serve as the director) must be a Saudi national, and is responsible for submitting the application. Applicants must submit a letter in English (max 1,000 words) explaining their motivation for joining, what they aim to bring to the challenge, and why they want to compete for a residency in France. A short script and links to past film or media work may also be included, though not required. Selected teams will take part in a two-day online workshop on July 11th–12th, covering all aspects of short film production. Attendance is mandatory, except for the writing session, which is for the team's writer and director. Filming will take place on July 18th to the 19th. Teams will create a three to seven minute film exploring one main theme—de-coding, playing, creating, or thinking—and one sub-theme such as memory, time, technology, or breath. A surprise element revealed 24 hours before the shoot must also be included. Films can be in Arabic or English. Arabic submissions must include English or French subtitles. All content must be newly created for the challenge.

EXCLUSIVE BTS: Saudi-Egyptian Series 'Jad Jadid' Begins Production

The project is backed by the Saudi Cultural Fund and produced by Red Curtains Production. A new cross-border collaboration is taking shape as JAD JADID begins production. The Saudi-Egyptian series brings together talent from both countries in a narrative that explores themes of memory, identity and personal restoration. The project is backed by the Saudi Cultural Fund, produced by Red Curtains Production, and led by director Salma El Kashef. At its heart is Youssef, a young man who wakes from a two-year coma into a life he no longer recognises, haunted by guilt, fragmented by lost memories, and searching for identity in a world that has moved on without him. Guiding him is his grandmother, played by the iconic Sawsan Badr. Alongside her, a cast of characters, friends, strangers, and chosen family navigate their own internal battles, threading personal and collective traumas into a multilayered story. The series features a dynamic cast from across the region, including Amawri, Adwa Bader, May Elghety, and Ali El Sabaa. It also introduces newcomer Khaled Ali in his first on-screen role, alongside veteran performers Mohsen Mohieddin, Amr Gamal, and Mohamed Alfie. JAD JADID is based on a concept by Amawri and written by Reem Al Kammash. The creative team includes executive producers Amira Sherif and Mohamed Sabry Abaza, director of photography Karim Ashraf, set designer Merit Amer and stylist Amna Al Shandaweely. Kino Films is handling the series' executive production, with the release date yet to be announced.
