Lescott hails the boom in football trading cards

South Wales Argus16 hours ago
The former Manchester City star was in attendance for the launch of the Topps Premier League 2026 collection at the Fanatics flagship London store on Regent Street on Thursday.
Lescott was amazed by the reaction of hundreds of fans who flooded in to get their hands on the new collection and enjoyed the celebrations alongside legends like Alan Shearer and Steven Gerrard.
'It's crazy because now it helps a younger generation recognise me for my playing days and probably even more than when I was playing. It's a nice feeling,' he said.

'Obviously, you're aware that cards are rarer than others but there's more detail than that.
'When I was younger, there were five cards, one was shiny and you knew you would get a badge in there, but now there are beast mode cards and all that stuff.'
The all-new Topps Premier League 2026 collection is a stand-alone range outside of Match Attax and boasts an extensive parallel programme with 15 colour variations across unnumbered and numbered parallels.
It features players from all 20 Premier League clubs featured in the collection as well as legends and more autographs than ever before.
The launch evoked nostalgia for Lescott who remembered collecting himself as a child and also funding the passion of his youngest son.
'My first collection was Gladiators and then I went into this world [of football]. But my youngest son is an avid collector of cards,' he recalled.
'He used to use them as his version of Subbuteo. He played cards, so he used to collect the cards and put them in teams and would entertain himself, so I'm aware of this world.'
It was fitting, too, that Gerrard was in attendance alongside Premier League stars like Theo Walcott, Jermaine Defoe and current Chelsea star Tosin Adarabioyo as Lescott recalls a particularly impressive card from his son's collection.
'He was collecting them before it was as big as it is now. I told him the industry of collectibles, especially in American sports, were massive and it was transitioning over to football,' he said.
'I told him to start collecting some of the rarer players but he just wanted to play with them, he wasn't thinking about collecting them.
'We were lucky enough to be at a Steven Gerrard event years ago and he got honoured with a card and it was a Premier League legends card. So he's got that one, but that's still in the case he's still protecting that one.
'But overall, he hasn't got any ones that would be worth using because they're all frayed at the ends.'
Marking the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection were football icons Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand, joined by Jermaine Defoe, Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Tosin Adarabioyo, alongside Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in a star-studded celebration.

Carlos Baleba to Man Utd swap deal truth as personal terms for transfer 'agreed'

Carlo Baleba is a top target for Manchester United (Image: Getty Images) Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has achieved the first priority of the summer window - radically overhaul his attack. The Red Devils scored a paltry 44 goals in a Premier League season which saw them finish a desperate 15th. Benjamin Sesko's imminent transfer is expected to be announced later today, after he completed his medical at Carrington on Friday. The £74million deal with RB Leipzig means United have now spent more than £200m on their new-look forward line which also included Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Now Amorim can turn his attention to the midfield, having gone public with his desire to add extra dynamism in the middle of the park. Along with that, is the unenviable task of offloading United's unwanted and overpaid members of the 'bomb squad'. Marcus Rashford has already departed, but the likes of Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho are eagerly awaiting their own exits. Mirror Football brings you the latest transfer headlines involving Manchester United … READ MORE: Win Premier League Tickets to Chelsea v Crystal Palace or Man City v Tottenham READ MORE: Transfer news: Sesko undergoes Man Utd medical, Chelsea star asks to leave, Isak and Eze latest After revamping and retooling his attack, Amorim is now on the lookout for a midfielder. Brighton star Carlos Baleba is understood to be United's top target, even if a deal will be difficult to complete this summer. The Seagulls have slapped a price tag north of £100m on the Cameroon international and are insistent they won't sell before the start of this season. The player himself is also understood to be willing to wait another 12 months before becoming the latest big-money exit from The Amex. United will nevertheless try to get a deal done, but any proposal won't include Toby Collyer. Reports had suggested the academy graduate could be used as a makeweight in a possible Baleba offer, but those appear wide of the mark. Alejandro Garnacho looks set to leave Old Trafford (Image: Getty Images) While Collyer is likely staying put, Garnacho is almost certain to leave during the current window. The Argentine has been deemed surplus to requirements by Amorim and is training away from the main group. But Garnacho has put his foot down regarding where he will go next, with a belief he's made it clear that it's Chelsea or nothing. For their part, the Blues are also keen to strike a deal, despite their riches in attacking areas. On Friday, Fabirizio Romano reported that the two parties had reached a total agreement on personal terms. It's now down to the two clubs to strike a deal. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been linked with a move to Manchester United (Image: Justin Setterfield - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images) A new goalkeeper could also be on Amorim's agenda this summer after another inconsistent season by Andre Onana. Publicly at least, the manager has stuck with the former Inter stopper, but that hasn't stopped links with potential replacements. Gianluigi Donnarumma is at the top of that list, with his PSG future increasingly uncertain. The European champions are set to announce the signing of Lucas Chevalier, leaving Donnarumma free to look elsewhere. Could he make the move to English football? Kieran McKenna happy with last-gasp point but ‘hard work to do'

Birmingham deservedly took the lead in the 55th minute thanks to Jay Stansfield, who was on hand to emphatically smash into the roof of the net from close range after Kyogo Furuhashi's initial dinked effort bounced off the post. Ipswich failed to register a shot on target in open play and it looked like they would be handed a rude awakening on their return from the Premier League until referee Andrew Kitchen pointed to the spot in stoppage time for a handball by Lyndon Dykes. George Hirst stepped up and sent Ryan Allsop the wrong way. Tempers flared in the aftermath, which saw Ipswich midfielder Jack Taylor confronted by a Birmingham fan near the advertising hoardings. McKenna knows his team have to be better but is happy to pick up a point in a hostile atmosphere. He said: 'It was always going to be a difficult place to come here tonight and the group fought well in the first half. For sure we need to impose ourselves on the game earlier than what we did to be the team that we want to be this year. 'I think a lot of teams would have come here and lost tonight. It wasn't a fantastic game, didn't play as well as we would have liked, but we found a way to battle for a point which hopefully will will be an important one at the end. 'We've got some really hard work to do on the training pitch in the next few weeks, we have to sort some situations out, get the squad to where it needs to be. 'In the meantime, we have to pick up points and we've picked one up tonight in a really hard place.' After Taylor was confronted by a fan, McKenna confirmed the midfielder is fine. He added: 'Jack's alright. Somebody just showed me it. It's obviously not ideal. But I think it's being reported so, you know, the authorities will deal with it.' Birmingham boss Chris Davies thought his side were the better team and was proud of the way they fought against another of the favourites for promotion. He said: 'It was about the performance. It was about the attitude. How are we going to handle this occasion, this game, against a team of this quality? And I was really pleased with that, I thought we were the better team. We dominated the match. 'There was a lot to like, and I think for the players that should give them confidence that we've retained our identity and not just in terms of stylistically, but also the spirit and fight and determination that we had last season. 'We showed what we can do. But definitely tonight, there's enough there for me to go home (with) mixed emotions but pleased with what I've seen.'
