Singapore women's hockey team overcame stomach flu to win maiden AHF Cup
SINGAPORE – A bout of stomach flu had threatened to derail the Singapore women's hockey team during their AHF Cup campaign from April 18-27 in Jakarta.
But they overcame the odds to clinch the title for the first time at the Bung Karno Sports Complex on April 27, beating Chinese Taipei 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the final. The win also earned them qualification for the Women's Hockey Asia Cup later this year.
Singapore had to dig deep in the final as they went behind with nine minutes to go.
Coach Henry Wong then took a gamble by bringing on an outfielder for the goalkeeper and the move paid off as the Singaporeans equalised two minutes from time to force the shoot-out.
The title capped a dramatic week for the team, with five players struck by a stomach bug just after their group stage match against Chinese Taipei – which they lost 4-2. Two of those stricken also had to receive intravenous drips at the hospital.
Co-captain Valerie Sim, who was one of those who caught the bug, said: 'It was quite tough, I got a fever after the Chinese Taipei game because I think I pushed (myself) and played my best… But the whole team supported us and we managed to pull through.'
The 24-year-old added: 'Winning the AHF Cup meant a lot to all of us because we made history and it's been a long time coming… It's been a while since we've seen gold.
'It's not just an achievement, but it's a reflection of everything our team has worked for. And to us, it feels like the start of something bigger, qualifying for the Asia Cup, and also knowing that we've got SEA Games coming at the end of this year.
'Both these tournaments give us the opportunity to challenge ourselves against some of the best teams in the world.'
Wong said the belief and confidence from winning the AHF Cup can spur the team to aim for a top-six finish at the Asia Cup.
The 40-year-old coach said: 'It hasn't fully sunk in what it means to this playing group and to the hockey community, but it's a really big step for us to go where we want to go. And I think the biggest thing for me is to instil self-confidence and belief in the players.
'A goal for us is to make sure that we come in the top six of (the Asia Cup), because then we don't have to qualify for the next one. And if we're pushing for top six, a top-five finish would put us in place for the World Cup qualifying event.'

Singapore's best finish at the continental cup competition was a fourth-place finish during their debut in 1985.
The Asia Cup winners will progress directly to the 2026 World Cup, while the next four teams earn spots in the qualifiers.
Player of the Tournament Dayana Ong, who came up from the youth squad that played in the Women's Junior AHF Cup in 2024, was glad the team overcame the setbacks to emerge as the champions.
'To win (the AHF Cup) is really a huge achievement because the team faced many challenges throughout the week, so I really hope that we can carry on this energy to the Asia Cup.'
The 17-year-old said of her award: 'I never imagined that I could have gotten this award. It was really surreal, because as a junior player, I really think that the team is just playing at a much higher level than I am.
'This is my first major senior tournament and I'm really honoured to receive this.'

Messi magic needed for Inter Miami as injuries pile up
MIAMI - Inter Miami will have to rely heavily on Lionel Messi's firepower as they prepare for Saturday's Club World Cup opener against Al-Ahly, with coach Javier Mascherano forced to re-shuffle his backline due to a string of injuries. Fullback Jordi Alba, fellow defender Gonzalo Lujan and defensive midfielder Yannick Bright have all been ruled out of the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium. "They are not available for this game, hopefully they will be for the second game," Mascherano told a press conference on Friday. Alba, one of Messi's former Barcelona teammates, is sidelined with a hamstring issue. There were also concerns regarding the fitness of centre back David Martinez. "David had some kind of pain yesterday and we did not want to take any risks," said Mascherano. "The reality is that throughout the season, the team have dealt with injuries, but the players who stepped in rose to the challenge. That gives us peace of mind," he said. Miami have conceded 16 goals in their last six competitive games. Much of Miami's chances rest on Messi's shoulders. "He's in good shape this season. There were moments when we had to give him some time to rest, but he's played the last 15 games, except for the match against Dallas when we rested the entire squad," said Mascherano. "We were also fortunate he was able to rest during Argentina's last two games," he added referring to Messi playing 111 minutes in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia earlier this month. "It's our responsibility to create the right environment for him to shine." Miami will also take on Porto and Palmeiras in the 32-club competition. 'We called our pitches Old Trafford': Cunha's childhood fantasy becomes reality
MANCHESTER, England :Manchester United's stadium will not feel entirely unfamiliar to Matheus Cunha when the Brazilian makes his home debut for his new team next season. It is almost like he has been playing at Old Trafford for years. A day after United completed the signing of Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the dynamic forward said he grew up in the Brazilian beach city of Joao Pessoa dreaming of one day playing for the club. "It is hard to find a way to explain this club to me," the 26-year-old said in an interview with United's in-house media. "My house didn't have the channel to watch the Premier League. My cousin's house didn't have the channel. "Only in my grandma's house, we can watch the Premier League, so we organised to go every weekend. And for me, it was always a bit inside of me, this club. When I play with (my cousin) in the street, on the beach, on the gravel pitch, we called these pitches 'Old Trafford.' Imagine. "So, wow, it's so hard to be here now, thinking about the past — it's very emotional for me." Cunha scored 15 Premier League goals for Wolves last season. He also helped Brazil qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, setting up the only goal in a decisive 1-0 win at home to Paraguay. His move to Manchester raised some eyebrows after United finished a woeful 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for any European football next season. But he said the club and its former stars had left a lasting impression. "It's hard to talk about because I remember the whole squad at the time that I started to watch," he said. "In the front, (Wayne) Rooney, wow. Someone that I think I have a lot of particulars in my game, because I always give everything. "I remember he was the No. 10 and everyone loved the skills of the player in his shirt, but he brings more. He goes to the grass (slide tackle) to take the ball, this kind of energy inside of him was a big example. "(Cristiano) Ronaldo, everyone knows, it is easy to talk about him. Ryan Giggs. Everyone. I can imagine the team, it started with (Edwin) Van der Sar in the goal, Rio Ferdinand, (Nemanja) Vidic, the defenders, Paul Scholes, wow, (Michael) Carrick. The team for me, honestly, was a big impact for my teenage years."

Real Madrid sign Argentina teenager Mastantuono on six-year deal
Real Madrid have signed 17-year-old midfielder Franco Mastantuono from Argentine side River Plate on a six-year contract, the LaLiga club said on Friday. The Spanish outfit had agreed to sign Mastantuono for about $45 million last week and the talented teenager, who can also play on the wing, will be a Real Madrid player from August 14. Having come through River Plate's youth system, Mastantuono was part of the first team in the 2024-25 season. In February last year, he becane the youngest scorer in River's history. He also became the youngest at 17 to play an official match for Argentina when he featured in their World Cup qualifier against Chile last week. Mastantuono had been linked to top European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April put him on the map. Mastantuono is Real's third close-season recruit after they signed Premier League defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
