Odisha emerges key location for JSW Steel-POSCO plant

Leading steelmaker JSW Steel and South Korea's POSCO Group have signed a non-binding Heads of Agreement (HoA) to jointly explore setting up a 6 million tonne per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in India.
Odisha is among the key locations being considered for the plant with the site most likely to be in Keonjhar, the home district of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The HoA builds on the MoU signed by both parties in October 2024 and outlines the broad framework for the proposed 50:50 joint venture towards establishment of an integrated steel plant in the country with an initial capacity of 5 MTPA. The partnership also aims to explore synergies in battery materials and renewable energy.

Over 11 lakh MSMEs registered on the Centre's enterprise portal are operational in the state, providing employment to over 87 lakh people, said the official statement from the chief minister's office. Majhi advised officials to support the Lakhpati Didis in establishing enterprises in the MSME sector. He emphasised the use of products manufactured by Odisha's MSME sector in all govt offices, schools, and colleges. Discussions were held about purchasing furniture and uniforms for various govt offices and educational institutions from Odisha MSMEs, official sources said.

Bengaluru: JSW Steel has signed a non-binding heads of agreement (HoA) with South Korea's steel giant POSCO Group, to jointly explore setting up of a 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in India. This HoA builds on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both parties in October 2024 and outlines the broad framework for the proposed 50:50 joint venture. .JSW Cement debuts 4% higher after 7.77x subscribed HoA was signed in Mumbai in the presence of Lee Ju-tae, Representative Director and President, POSCO Holdings, and Jayant Acharya, Joint Managing Director & CEO, JSW part of the next steps, JSW and POSCO will undertake a detailed feasibility study to finalise the plant's location, investment terms, resource availability, and other critical factors. Given its natural resource base and logistical advantages, Odisha is among the key locations being considered, JSW Steel said in a statement. Jayant Acharya said, 'This partnership brings together JSW's proven execution capabilities and strong domestic footprint with POSCO's technological leadership in steelmaking. The proposed venture aligns with India's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and will help create a globally competitive manufacturing hub to serve both domestic and export markets.'Lee Ju-tae added, 'India is central to the future of global steel demand. Our collaboration with JSW is based on mutual trust and a shared long-term vision. Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday thanked the Centre for approving the Rs 8,307.74 crore Capital Region Ring Road project, calling it a landmark infrastructure initiative that will decongest major urban centres and boost the economy. He said the project will also enhance logistics efficiency and open new avenues for economic growth and prosperity in Odisha and the eastern region. 'I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon'ble Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri @nitin_gadkari ji for according approval to the construction of the 6-Lane Access-Controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass – 110.875 km) in Odisha at a total cost of Rs 8,307.74 crore,' Majhi posted on X. In a post on X, Modi said, 'Congratulations to the people of Odisha, especially Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas, on Cabinet decision regarding a vital infra project cleared today, which will ease congestion and boost 'Ease of Living''. Currently, connectivity between Rameswar to Tangi on existing National Highway, experiences significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, passing through densely urbanised cities Khurda, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. To address these challenges, the project is proposed to be developed as 6-Lane Access-Controlled Greenfield Highway.. Stating that the project will provide significant benefit to Odisha and other eastern States by diverting heavy commercial traffic away from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Khurda, an official said this will enhance the efficiency of freight movement, reducing logistics cost and driving socio-economic growth in the region. The project alignment integrates with three major national highways (NH-55, NH-57 and NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65), providing seamless connectivity to key economic, social and logistics nodes across Odisha, the official added. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with 10 economic nodes, four social nodes and five logistic nodes, providing enhanced multimodality with a major railway station, an airport, one proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two major ports thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. As estimated, the project will generate approximately 74.43 lakh person-days of direct and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.
