Calgary cyclists concerned with Edworthy paid parking plan
Social Sharing
The City of Calgary's plan to renovate Edworthy Park's north parking lot and implement paid parking to recoup the cost has left members of the cycling community concerned.
Located in northwest Calgary, Edworthy Park has long been a staple for cycling enthusiasts, and changes to the accessibility of parking there could be problematic, explained Doug Clark, president of cycling non-profit Bike Calgary.
"If they start charging for it, is that actually the right thing to do? Is it going to encourage people to re-evaluate the way they move around the city and choose more sustainable, more overall cost-effective ways of doing it?"
Clark, a frequent visitor to Edworthy Park, suggested that cyclists may be dissuaded from parking at the lot or even incorporating cycling into their schedule if parking is no longer free.
Designated 'Park and Bike' site
The popular north Edworthy parking lot is one of the city's seven designated Calgary Park and Bike sites. People commuting by both car and bike are encouraged to park at one of the sites to avoid fees for downtown parking while getting exercise and minimizing traffic congestion on their way downtown. The locations are five to eight kilometres from the core.
"At least part of that trip is a healthy and a sustainable way to move around the city. So certainly I don't want to do anything that discourages that ability to offer those transportation choices," said Clark.
However, he added, implementing paid parking at the Edworthy lot is an extra cost for cyclists that contradicts the city's intent for commuters to save on paid parking downtown.
According to the city, the proposed development includes resurfacing the pothole-ridden gravel lot along with installing designated parking spaces, better drainage, new lighting, EV chargers and a machine to pay for parking, for an approximate cost of $1 million.
"That's going to come out of taxpayers' pockets," said Clark. "Is that really the best way to spend the money? Are we sort of complicating the issue in terms of incentivizing the right kind of transportation choices that people take in the city?"
Paid parking to recoup development costs
Terry Wong, councillor for Ward 7, said the city first began moving forward on the parking lot project early in April due in part to concerns brought up by property owners.
"We're not doing this to dissuade people from riding their bicycles," he said. "We're doing this to create more, much more functionality in the park, in the parking lot, for different people to use it."
He noted that the Edworthy lot project is still in the early stages of development and that Calgary Parking is exploring a number of options, such as offering a few hours of free parking prior to charging, offering a monthly rate or having designated paid parking areas.
"Any parking infrastructure to put in has to be cost recovered somehow, so that's where the paid parking comes in," said Wong.
Calgary resident Sara Mills, who regularly parks and bikes from the Edworthy lot on her way downtown, says she doesn't mind the parking lot not being paved. She would rather not have to pay for parking as a consequence of the planned development.
"I think this is a really great place to have free parking and encourages people to ride their bikes and stay active and commute to work in alternative ways other than driving," said Mills. "Because I find that is very common, driving in Calgary, and it's not super accessible in the city to ride bikes in a lot of ways. So I think having this really does encourage that."
Construction could start by spring 2026, pending construction permit approval.

A Little Bad News for Rivian and Lucid
Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) and Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) entered 2025 in different gears. Rivian was entering a year with no major vehicle launch, stagnating deliveries, and a lack of any visible catalysts, while Lucid has strung together six consecutive quarters of record deliveries and is ramping the production of its new Gravity SUV. One thing they both have in common is a growing, albeit more slowly than hoped, electric vehicle (EV) market. Here's the bad news: Some recent data says that the EV market sentiment looks to be souring. Survey says Tesla changed the game when it made EVs "cool" for the first time. Since then, the hype surrounding EVs as the future of transportation has swept the globe, in some countries (like China) faster than in others. But according to a recent survey, that hype could be in decline in the U.S. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Interest in EVs spiraled to its lowest level since 2019, according to a consumer survey commissioned by AAA. Only 16% of respondents reported being "likely" or "very likely" to purchase an EV as their next vehicle, signaling consumer caution. The percentage of respondents who indicated they would be "unlikely" or "very unlikely" to purchase an EV as their next vehicle jumped from 51% to 63%, the highest mark since 2022. The percentage who believe that most cars will be electric within the next decade fell from 40% in 2022 to 23% this year. Not only is interest in EVs down, there's also the lingering pessimism surrounding battery repair costs, total costs, and charging infrastructure -- a story as old as EVs themselves. More specifically, 62% of respondents noted high battery repair costs as a main reason for avoiding going electric, while purchase price was cited by 59% of respondents. The hesitation when it comes to purchase price is understandable. The average transaction price for a new EV in March was $59,205, far higher than the overall average transaction price of $47,462, according to data from Cox Automotive. As far as consumer concerns go, 56% of respondents had the fear of running out of charge while driving, and 55% noted a lack of convenient public charging stations. Pulling support The waning consumer sentiment goes hand in hand with the Trump administration's effort to pull support from the EV industry. House Republicans passed a budget bill on May 22 that will reduce federal incentives for battery manufacturing, as well as other clean energy projects. If the Senate approves it, it would cut the section of the bill that provides the $7,500 EV tax credit. The administration took it a step further, as the bill also institutes a new tax of $250 for EV owners and $100 for hybrid owners. The tax contributes to the Highway Trust Fund to support infrastructure. What it all means Investors would be wise to temper growth expectations for the EV industry this year, especially with tariff uncertainty hanging over the automotive industry. That's especially true considering that first-quarter data could give a different impression. EV registrations grew 16%, according to S&P Global Mobility, and market share rose from 6.9% to 7.7%, year over year. There was a demand pull-ahead effect due to people predicting that the tax credit would soon disappear. Rivian, which is currently waiting anxiously for the R2 launch, lacks momentum in 2025 and could use broader industry strength to boost its stock price. Investors who believe in Rivian long-term should keep their eyes open for a buying opportunity this year. For Lucid investors, while this decline in consumer sentiment isn't ideal, the company has plenty of self-driven momentum thanks to quarters of record deliveries. The company is currently ramping up production and deliveries of the new Gravity SUV EV, which will continue driving total deliveries higher throughout the year. For these two young automakers, the broader industry's health is important. The simple truth is that people aren't taking to EVs in the U.S. as quickly as investors had hoped. Australia Sales Are Surging for Tesla. How Should You Play TSLA Stock Here?
Tesla (TSLA) shares are inching down on Wednesday even though the EV maker said its sales recovered sharply last month in Australia. The company's electric vehicle sales in the region climbed significantly to a 12-month high of 3,897 in May. Much of that strength was related to soaring demand for its revamped Model Y. Despite today's decline, Tesla stock is up more than 50% versus its year-to-date low. EV Sales Pickup Could Drive Tesla Stock Higher Tesla bulls have been counting on the company's upcoming launch of robotaxi services in Austin, tentatively slated for June 12. But the monthly sales data offers another compelling reason to hop right back into the EV stock. According to data from the Australian Electric Vehicle Council, the automaker's deliveries in May were up a whopping 675% sequentially in the land down under, indicating a meaningful pickup in demand. Plus, TSLA sales in Norway were also up some 213% last month, potentially further substantiating that drivers are turning back to its EVs following reputational damage from Musk's involvement in politics. In short, the aforementioned data confirms that the company's sales are starting to recover globally, which could help unlock significant further upside in Tesla stock moving forward. Morgan Stanley Forecasts a Rally in TSLA Shares to $410 Morgan Stanley analysts reiterated their 'Overweight' rating on Tesla shares in a research note this morning, citing the EV giant's potential to break into the drone industry. The company has significant experience in manufacturing, electric motors, autonomy, battery storage, and robotics – which makes it well-positioned to penetrate the 'commercial and non-commercial' drones market, they wrote. Robotaxi operations and humanoid robotics progress could push TSLA stock up further to $410 over the next 12 months, the investment firm added. Morgan Stanley's price target translates to more than 20% upside in Tesla from current levels. What's the Consensus Rating on Tesla in 2025? Despite positive EV sales data and the expected launch of robotaxi services next week, Wall Street remains cautious on Tesla stock for the remainder of 2025. The consensus rating on TSLA currently sits at 'Hold' only with the mean target of $292 indicating potential downside of 15% from here.
