No bids received for Pakistan's tender for 50,000 sugar metric tons, say traders
Traders said the shipment and arrival periods were regarded as having too short notice for realistic offers.
The tender from the state trading agency Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) sought loading from August 1-15. The entire volume purchased was sought for arrival in Pakistan by August 30.
Pakistan's government had on July 8 approved plans to import 500,000 tons of sugar to help maintain price stability. Market analysts said that retail sugar prices in the country have risen sharply since January.

At least five arrested as Pakistan widens crackdown on illegal currency exchange, transfers
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested five suspects involved in illegal currency exchange and transfer of money, the agency said on Sunday, amid a widening crackdown on black market currency traders. The development comes days after the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan's powerful military-run spy agency, held a meeting in Islamabad with senior officials from currency exchange companies, amid growing concern over the rupee's depreciation, which fell to a 22-month low of Rs284.97 against the US dollar earlier this week. Maj. Gen. Faisal Naseer, a deputy chief of the ISI, chaired the session, according to Malik Bostan, who attended the discussion and is the chairman of the Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (ECAP), told Arab News. The FIA had begun raiding informal, unregulated money transfer, or 'hundi' and 'hawala,' operators and currency smuggling networks. In a statement on Sunday, the agency said it was tightening the noose around networks involved currency smuggling and had conducted major operations in the southwestern Balochistan province that border Iran and Afghanistan. 'Five suspects involved in hawala, hundi and illegal currency exchange have been arrested,' the FIA said in a statement. 'The suspects were arrested in raids in different areas of Quetta and Chaman.' Pakistan operates a multi-tiered currency market, with rates diverging between the official interbank channel, the open market, and an unregulated 'grey market' where many traders and informal hawala dealers operate. Burdened by over $58 billion in imports in the last fiscal year, Pakistan faces severe inflationary pressure whenever the dollar strengthens. The rupee has lost 2 percent of its value since January, despite Pakistan's current account recording a surplus of $2.1 billion, according to central bank data. During the raids in Balochistan, the FIA said, officials seized 684,000 Pakistani rupees, 230.5 million Iranian rials, more than 135,000 Afghanis, 700 US dollars, 200 Saudi riyals and 150 Australian dollars. 'Cheque books, hawala-hundi receipts and bank deposit slips were also recovered from the suspects,' it said. 'The accused were involved in currency exchange without a license. They could not give a satisfactory answer to the authorities regarding the recovered currency.' The agency said it was further investigating the arrested suspects.

US says tariff deadline of August 1 is firm, no extensions
The US deadline of August 1 for imposing tariffs on its trading partners is firm and there will be no extensions, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday. 'So no extensions, no more grace periods. August 1, the tariffs are set. They'll go into place. Customs will start collecting the money, and off we go,' Lutnick told 'Fox News Sunday.' For all the latest headlines follow our Google News channel online or via the app. After the levies kick in, President Donald Trump – who was negotiating Sunday in Scotland with European Union officials – is still willing to keep talking, Lutnick said. Of the Europeans, Lutnick said, 'You know they're hoping they make a deal, and it's up to President Trump, who's the leader of this negotiating table. We set the table.' So far five countries have struck deals with the Trump administration ahead of the Friday deadline as it tries to overhaul the global system of largely free trade by slapping tariffs on countries that the United States deems as engaging in unfair practices. These five are Britain, Vietnam, Indonesia the Philippines, and Japan. The levies they accepted are often higher than the new base rate of 10 percent that the United States has applied to most countries since April. But they are far below the levels the Trump administration threatened to impose if no deal were reached.

In corporate disclosures, the National Agricultural Development Co. reported its consolidated financial results for the six-month period ending June 30. According to a Tadawul statement, the company posted a net profit of SR218.6 million, up 2.5 percent year on year. The increase was attributed to higher revenue and treasury income, along with changes in cost of sales, selling and marketing expenses, impairment losses, financing costs, and other income and expenses. NADEC shares ended the session at SR21.02, down 0.81 percent. Meanwhile, Yanbu National Petrochemical Co. announced a net profit of SR58.2 million for the first half of the year, marking an 82 percent year-on-year decline. The drop was primarily due to lower average selling prices across all products and higher input costs, despite increased sales volumes and stable operational performance. Yanbu shares rose 2.88 percent, closing at SR29.42. Sabic Agri-Nutrients Co. also released its interim financial results, reporting a net profit of SR2.04 billion for the first half of the year, reflecting a 32.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The growth was driven by a 22 percent rise in sales, along with an increase in share of results from associates and joint ventures. However, the rise was partially offset by higher costs of goods sold, mainly due to increased feedstock prices. SABIC Agri-Nutrients Co. shares closed at SR117, up 2.15 percent.
