Mystery bidder spent $250K on busted Nintendo and pair of GameStop CEO's underwear for charity

They did it for the lulz. A pair of well-known crypto bros paid an eye-watering $250,000 for a broken Nintendo Switch and a pair of underwear belonging to the CEO of GameStop as part of a New York City charity auction that raised money for a children's hospital this week, The Post has learned. The duo — who declined to give their real names for safety concerns — said they were willing to dole out the hefty sum for the items because of the symbolism the junk held to their fellow folks behind the 2021 GameStop short squeeze escapade. 4 The man behind the famous crypto wallet FBB4 and his partner, who will not reveal their identities, won the auction with a $250,000 bid. Stephen Yang for the New York Post 'Obviously, when you have like the CEO of the company saying that he's going to include his underwear and things like that, it's now becoming like an incredible meme in the GameStop subculture,' explained one half of the pair, who would only go by his initials, DC, citing safety concerns. 'So we've really aligned with the idea that we could have this part of the GameStop lore.' His partner, JM, added: 'That's going on the wall!' The duo — who are the ones behind the famous crypto wallet FBB4 — has been avid GameStop meme followers since the dying video game retailer's stock was infamously short-squeezed by random online investors as a way to stick it to Wall Street. 4 The refurbished Switch came with the damaged box, the stapler and the offending staple. Stephen Yang for the New York Post The incident started the concept of meme stocks, which are driven less by market value and more by the whims of Internet trolls — the most recent of which was the meteoric rise of American Eagle clothing after the Sydney Sweeney 'good jeans' dustup. GameStop again entered the annals of Internet lore on June 5, with another incident known in the gaming community as 'Staplegate.' The now-legendary mix-up came when a worker at a Staten Island GameStop unwittingly destroyed a handful of Nintendo Switch 2s — which were about to go on sale, rare and highly coveted by gamers — by stapling receipts onto the boxes. The young man — whose identity his employers are keeping under wraps — was terrified. 4 The GameStop CEO offered his used underwear if the auction price went to six figures. Courtesy of Gamestop The toys were already in such intense demand that retailers were struggling to keep up with pre-orders and gamers were lining up for hours for the chance to get their hands on the $499.99 console. 'I know he was a little nervous because the first thought is, 'Oh my God, I'm going to lose my job!' I think his first reaction was 'Uh-oh!'' said Chris Toro, the district manager for GameStop's metro locations, adding that the employee was in his 'early 20s.' 'He was a new associate. Probably his first job. And we said, 'Listen, people make mistakes. So we took care of it.' GameStop refurbished the broken consoles and replaced the damaged ones — but auctioned off what they claim was the first to get pummeled by the employee's stapler. It came with the original damaged box, the black stapler and the offending staple, 'carefully extracted and preserved,' and the GameStop CEO, Ryan Cohen, offered to throw in a pair of his unmentionables as the price climbed to six figures. 'Why not?' said Cohen, denying that it might be weird for another man to have his drawers in their home: 'I never thought about it.' The overarching goal was to spin the Staplegate incident into something positive, he continued. 'It's on brand … We always come up with crazy s–t at GameStop. There's never a dull day.' 4 The money will benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Stephen Yang for the New York Post Cohen overnighted a clean pair of black Calvin Kleins to Manhattan and had them framed for the occasion, saying he picked the pair because 'It just felt right.' JM denied that the undergarments were the reason he and DC pounced on the auction, but admitted it was cool to have something so personal belonging to the 'Meme King,' and is hopeful for the chance to meet Cohen. 'We're pretty stoked for that, though. It might feel a little awkward. I don't know if I can look him in the eye,' JM joked. JM and DC had expertly waited until the final minutes of the auction to submit their $250,000 bid, which was creeping to the limit of $269,420 they were willing to fork over. Every penny will benefit the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, which serve 12 million children across the US and Canada every year, battling every type of disease or health defect. 'It can be for lifesaving treatment, it can be for programs and services for patients and their families, it can be for research, it can be for medical equipment,' said Aimee Daily, the hospital's president and CEO. 'We really believe that this is actually going to be a catalyst for additional fundraising for hospitals through our extra life-saving programs … We think with GameStop's creativity and their support of this, this will continue to grow. And the $250,000 will become even more.'

We Finally Have a New Clue About James Gunn's Next DC Movie

Superman is DC's biggest hit in years, so, of course, the Man of Steel will be flying to the big screen once again. But in what movie? Well, we now have our best clue yet, even though it's still a little murky. In recent weeks, DC Studios president and writer and director of Superman, James Gunn, has teased that he's been writing a new DC movie that features Superman but isn't a Superman sequel. Most minds immediately jump to something like World's Finest, which could team up a new Batman with Superman, but that's just speculation. Gunn hasn't confirmed anything. Then, Thursday morning, Variety reported that CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, said on an earnings call that Gunn will write and direct 'the next installment in the Super-Family.' That's an intriguing statement with various potential implications, but, before speculating, most fans know the move is to check James Gunn's Threads account. That's where he likes to confirm, deny, and clarify certain rumors, and, as of publication, Gunn has done that… sort of. In response to a fan asking if he was, indeed, 'preparing for the next installment in the Super-Family,' the always-savvy Gunn focused on that first part of the question, replying, 'I am actually past preparing and well into writing.' Which, again, we knew. What Gunn didn't object to, though, was the phrase 'Super-Family,' and that's the big clue here. What does that mean, exactly? Well, for most of us, our minds jump to the movie itself, where we saw Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, appear. She's Superman's cousin, Krypto's owner, and the next DC hero with a film coming to the big screen. Two cousins and a dog certainly qualify as a 'super-family.' And if they had to team up, the adventure could take them practically anywhere across the DC Universe. That would be exciting. However, we also have to look at the messenger. It was David Zaslav who said 'Super-Family,' not someone with a deep knowledge of comic books. There's every chance in the world a business-driven CEO saying that just means something like 'the next in the family of Superman movies.' Or even the family of 'superhero movies.' It's a phrase that can be read as either very specific or very vague, depending on point of view. And, we think, that was on purpose. Gunn, to his credit, has suggested we'll learn what he's been writing and will next direct sooner rather than later. And, if we had to bet on it, we think it probably does feature Supergirl and Krypto alongside Superman. We just don't know for sure yet. What are your thoughts here? Do you think Gunn's next movie is about Kryptonian heritage? Or is David Zaslav speaking in broader strokes? Let us know below. Want more io9 news? Superman Review: James Gunn Crafts The Man Of Tomorrow We Need

There will be endless takes on James Gunn's Superman. Some will be part of coordinated efforts run by idiotic grifters, some will be from uneducated bores without anything interesting to say, and others will come from a place of sincerity that tries to lay out their perspective on this tentpole movie release. A Superman For Sincerity Sincerity is at the heart of Superman. It's clear that James Gunn is using the original superhero to make an argument against irony, cynicism, and even the new era of centrist cowardice. This kind of message is undoubtedly going to ruffle the feathers of anyone aligned with those toxic beliefs, and it's nice to see a blockbuster superhero movie feel like it's actually tackling the problems of today's world. Anchoring this outside of the script is David Corenswet's performance as Clark Kent. Gone is the stoic demi-god we've been stuck with in movies for nearly two decades. Corenswet captures the boyish optimism that has come to define Superman to fans of the comics and other iterations such as the television show My Adventures with Superman. But it's not just being charming and sweet-natured that makes Corenswet the best big screen Superman since Christopher Reeve. Clark's story in Superman is one of self-discovery, forced to reckon with his alien heritage and the values he had instilled in him thanks to his adopted upbringing. Corenswet is presented with a barrage of issues and contradictions, and watching him struggle, sometimes fail, and ultimately succeed through a mission of empathy makes this Superman an all-time interpretation. Gets Superman In fact, if Superman has one undeniable home run element, it's Superman. There is a very clear mission in this film to Get It Right when it comes to the titular hero. Naturally, this has to incorporate the beginnings of a cinematic universe, but Gunn is willing to bypass a bunch of table-setting storytelling in favor of using the larger DC universe to strengthen the themes he wants to hit home with Superman himself. Because once you look past all the giant monster battles, dimensional rifts, and evil sidekicks, it's clear that James Gunn wants to actually use Superman to say something substantive. One of the popular monikers for Superman is 'The Man of Tomorrow,' and no other Superman movie has really seemed to take that idea to heart like this one. Selfishness vs. Selflessness There's no doubt that Gunn sees a problem with modern masculinity and a core issue he wants to tackle is the encouragement of selflessness. The main conflict of the story between Superman and Lex Luthor (an equally landmark performance from Nicholas Hoult) boils down to the idea that our humanity is defined by our willingness to help our fellow humans. Lex Luthor argues that he wants to help others, but his motivations are based solely on his selfish hatred for Superman, and end up being both destructive and apathetic towards actual people. It's been exciting to see the rise and rise of superhero cinema as the dominant action mythology in popular culture, but more and more disheartening to see that most of these movies and television shows don't end up feeling like they are actually about anything worthwhile outside of basic character themes. Superman, like the rest of Gunn's DC output, is not afraid to openly be about topical/political issues. By doing so, Superman has an actual voice behind it instead of a visionless, corporate committee stamp of approval. In an era where riding the fence has become a celebrated position, Superman dares to take a stand and make a case for the Man of Tomorrow that we need: an earnest, empathetic hero who won't just sit on the sidelines when evil is clearly happening in the world. Does that mean things will get messy? Of course, that's the nature of actually standing for something. Superman does have its messier elements, but they are in service of a superhero movie that wants to do what it can to actually help the world. It sure would be nice to see that kind of noble sentiment more and more in the real world. Until that happens, at least we have Superman trying to inspire people to be real heroes.
