Government Cheese, review: no surrealist flight of fancy is left unflown

Telegraph16-04-2025
TV producers sometimes like to boast that, 'We've put all the money on the screen.' It means that rather than fritter the multiple millions on poster campaigns and fancy catering, it's all gone on production design, locations and making the thing look as good as it can. Which really, is exactly how it should be.
Government Cheese (Apple TV+), a new nine-part comedy-drama from Apple TV+, has put all the money on the screen. This being Apple, there's a lot to put there. Set in 1969 in a sort of suburban hinterland between the Jetsons, Wandavision, Mad Men and the Incredibles II, it looks sensational. It tells the story of Hampton Chambers (David Oyelowo), an ex-con trying to turn his life around after his release from prison, chasing impossible dreams and a stable family life in the San Fernando Valley, where everything is impeccably rendered.
Of course, when things look this good one is entitled to ask what lies beneath. Pretty pictures and a pleasing palette can conceal a lack of meaning or heart. In the beginning, Government Cheese does appear to be all surface, as it struggles to find its narrative centre. The early scenes, set in Hampton's jail just before his release, are dazzling but also dizzying. They feature a flood followed by a riot, smiles and jokes intercut with sudden stark violence, an introduction to Hampton's great invention – a self-sharpening drill bit – on which he is pinning all of his hopes, and a cast call for his family. The Chambers number a son called Einstein (Evan Ellison) who's into pole-vaulting and particle physics, another son called Harrison (Jahi Di'Allo Winston) who wears a cowboy hat and thinks his dad's a useless grifter, and Hampton's wife Astoria (Simone Missick) who didn't know her husband was coming back and would rather that he hadn't.
This is a lot to take in over an initial 45-minute episode (the rest are half-hours) and it doesn't help that creators Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr are plainly Wes Anderson aficionados. The show leaves no surrealist flight of fancy unflown, and is as interested in aesthetics and that perfect shot as it is in story.
Much like Wes Anderson's films, however, too much quirk can sometimes irk. There is undoubtedly a barrier to entry for Government Cheese (such as its name – it is nothing to do with politics; the name comes from an early saying that 'the best sandwiches come out of government cheese and white bread,' i.e. you can be inventive with the most meagre ingredients.).
But if you can stay the course, a few episodes in it settles into a worthwhile family drama cleaved to a likeable crime caper. Can Hampton stay on the righteous path or will he turn to the dark side in a bid to ensure his great invention makes his fortune? With Oyelewo at the centre and the family unit all strong, it turns out that Government Cheese is more than just window dressing. The money is not just on the screen – it's been spent on the writing, too.

Disney+ confirms free streaming date for 'Marvel's best movie in years' - and it's not Fantastic Four

Marvel fans say this comic book blockbuster is their best movie in years and soon you'll be able to stream it at no extra cost Disney+ will shortly be streaming one of this year's finest comic book films at no additional cost. ‌ The movie is presently available to rent or purchase at home, though you'll still need to fork out up to £13.99 on platforms like Apple TV, Prime Video and Sky Store. ‌ Fortunately, Disney+ subscribers won't have to wait much longer before they can stream the film whenever they fancy without paying anything beyond their monthly subscription. ‌ Comic book enthusiasts have hailed it as one of Marvel Studios' finest blockbusters in years - and, no, it's not the recently released The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Rather, we're discussing Thunderbolts*, which is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Wednesday, 27th August, reports the Mirror. Featuring Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Sebastian Stan, the movie follows an unlikely squad of heroes and villains from throughout the Marvel universe who reluctantly join forces to defend Earth from a perilous and unpredictable new menace. Pugh reprises her role as Yelena Belova, the new Black Widow, an elite mercenary who is battling to discover her place in the world when the mysterious Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) assigns her with a crucial but dubious new assignment. After a spell of disappointment for the superhero franchise, both commercially and critically, Marvel enthusiasts were delightfully surprised when Thunderbolts* exploded onto cinema screens back in April. ‌ One five-star Google review branded the film an "absolute gem of the superhero genre". "If you're looking for a fresh, high-octane adventure with a unique twist, Thunderbolts is exactly what you've been waiting for," they went on to promise. "This story is a masterclass in reimagining the traditional superhero team-up, featuring a lineup of antiheroes, former villains, and morally ambiguous characters who are forced to work together for a common cause." Someone else enthused: "Thunderbolts* was an incredible surprise. This movie fixes so many of the problems that recent MCU projects have suffered from. ‌ "It actually feels like one director was in charge of this, not a committee of executives. The humour also feels natural, not forced. ‌ "Which makes everything better. It doesn't feel like this movie was reworked and reshot a thousand times. The characters are also brilliant. Every actor is doing their absolute best and their chemistry is great." Another devoted fan raved on X: "Had the time of my life with #thunderbolts! One of the best mcu projects in recent years. "The movie does an outstanding job of exploring its themes surrounding mental health. I absolutely love [the] team and their dynamic, I cared so much about all of them. Easy 10/10." ‌ And a final viewer confessed: "Shocked how good THUNDERBOLTS* is. Putting emphasis on the character work and practical action makes this feel like the old Marvel that had us for a decade plus. "Wish we'd gotten this sooner. Helps that this dysfunctional team has chemistry too." Thunderbolts* will be available to stream on Disney+ from Wednesday, 27th August.

People are cancelling Netflix subscriptions for very unexpected reason

Netflix is one of the many streaming services that have a range of movies and shows - but now users are cancelling their subscriptions and opting for another source of content Film enthusiasts worldwide are ditching their Netflix subscriptions and reverting to a more traditional style of viewing. The unexpected reason for the cancellations is that budget-conscious viewers are seeking cheaper, and in some cases free, ways to watch their favourite films and shows. ‌ A move away from streaming platforms has been prompted by some people finding it hard to justify the cost of multiple services. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime are just a handful of the many streaming services available, all offering original content. ‌ However, fans are pushing back against the "limited" range of streaming options. Astonishingly, many have revealed they're returning to the era of DVD and Blu-Ray. ‌ One user on the r/Frugal Reddit page wrote: "How many of you are cancelling subscriptions and going back to DVDs? My mum in particular isn't tech friendly so has kept all DVDs and loves picking one to watch. "I still have my DVDs too but got caught out on subscriptions. I personally have decided to cancel all subscriptions for half a year so we can only have six months max of subscriptions. For example, I may have signed up to Stan for three months while watching a TV show I can't buy then cancel. "Then a few months later I did three months of Netflix to watch some documentaries and now cancelled and that's it for the year. Who else is moving back to DVDs? It's been amazing to not be stuck with decision fatigue and actually own things again. Next year we will only allow ourself three months total for the year for subscriptions." Movie lovers are discovering that the switch is much simpler than expected, claiming that borrowing DVDs from the library is a cost-free and straightforward way to access new films. One comment reads: "I just get free DVD rentals from my local library." Another added: "I don't know why I never thought of this. I'll have to check mine out, thank you!" ‌ A third individual has dubbed libraries as a "cheat code" for accessing top-notch films and telly programmes without depending on streaming services. They wrote: "Library's the cheat code: no fees, no contracts, and the shelves throw you into shows and movies you'd never pick from a scrolling app." ‌ Another user shared: "We have a bunch of DVDs but pretty much stopped watching them when we got streaming platforms. "Then as more and more streaming platforms came around and the options for available shows and films on each got smaller and smaller, we started watching some of our saved electronic films instead. "Most DVDs and blue ray discs come with an e-copy on the disc that we saved to our home server. Some of our older DVDs don't have the electronic version so we hooked up one of the gaming systems to our TV and watched a film last weekend. "We will probably do this more often as the selection on the streaming platforms get smaller." A third person pointed out that DVDs were anywhere between 25p and 50p in charity shops, meaning you could genuinely save cash if you fancy reducing your subscription costs.
