
A spike in tick-borne diseases expected to be higher in CT this summer, experts say. Here's why.
The reason? Acorns.
The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station is reporting a significant increase in acorn abundance that occurred last fall as compared to past years, a phenomenon referred to as either a 'mast year' or 'bumper crop year,' officials said.
Nearly 87% of all red oaks in the study were documented with acorns compared to a historical average of 57%. Recent bumper crop years occurred in red oaks in 2016 and 2019, and in 2015 for white oaks.
'A bumper crop can drive several ecological processes in our forests, such as the opportunity to help maintain and perpetuate declining oak populations while providing a nutritious food source to sustain wildlife populations throughout the winter months,' said Joseph Barsky, the lead forest researcher for the study.
While scientists aren't quite sure why bumper crop years occur in oak trees, the phenomenon has a direct impact on wildlife such as rodents and deer. Mice, a common carrier of Lyme disease and a well-known host for ticks, can often see their populations multiply with an abundance of acorns. The acorns act as an important food source for them over winter, according to experts at the CAES.
Some mice have been found to harbor over 200 ticks, with an average of about 23 ticks per mouse, according to experts.
'Masting events can also lead to higher rodent populations, which serve as primary reservoir hosts for numerous human pathogens including the bacteria that causes Lyme disease,' said Dr. Scott Williams, chief scientist for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Science and Forestry.
Dr. Goudarz Molaei, head of the tick testing program at CAES, said that it is likely that the state will see a higher number of ticks infested with Lyme due to the increased acorn production. However, those numbers aren't yet available to compare over previous years.
'The year after increased acorn production, we will see a lot of ticks feeding on rodents,' Molaei said. 'Those ticks are in the larvae stage, as they don't yet feed on humans. So when they feed on those rodents, they will then be able to pick up more pathogen load including Lyme disease. We may see a higher prevalence this year, but we don't yet have the data. I would advise people to be cautious and if bitten by a tick, to get that tick tested.'
Molaei said current testing shows the black legged tick population, the most common vector of Lyme disease, to be around 50% infected with Lyme disease. Those numbers could climb as more tick larvae mature over the next few months.
'Mice are excellent vectors of disease,' Molaei said. 'They are common carriers for multiple pathogens that the ticks then carry and spread.'
Thomas Worthley, UConn forestry and extension educator, said that scientists aren't quite sure why mast years occur, but they seem to happen after extreme negative climate or environmental impacts. Mast year occurrences vary by species and seem to be common among oak trees.
'If you go back to 2015, 2016 time frame, we had the spongy moth that was contributing to widespread deforestation,' Worthley said. 'That's when we had the last bumper crop season and we saw an increased level of acorn production. So there is a theory that they can occur after some type of impact to trees. It is believed weather and soil play a role as well.'
Worthley said that mast seasons remain a poorly understood phenomenon because scientists can't replicate the amount of variables that may be responsible for them including weather, climate, soil, chemicals and external factors.
'There's a lot of reasons why they may occur,' Worthley said. 'The most common are climate and weather changes and soil changes over time. They seem to occur more in red oaks than white oaks, but there's a lot of variability there. Some oaks produce a lot more acorns than other oaks, but there is a noticeable impact on animals including rodents and deer. Those populations often will increase due to the acorn abundance. In turn, you also see a growing population of predatory birds that feed on those populations.'
Molaei said that anyone who is going into the woods this summer should take precautions including wearing pants and long sleeved shirts and using protection including tick spray. Anyone who experiences a tick bite should monitor their symptoms and send it to their municipal health department. The CAES performs all tick testing in the state.
'It's important to get that tick tested if you begin to experience symptoms, so that we know exactly what you may have,' Molaei said. 'There's an increased prevalence of many different types of tick-borne diseases including babesiosis and other viral diseases. So it's not just Lyme disease that we are seeing in higher prevalence. We urge everyone to take tick precautions seriously.'

Why it matters: Especially during the most active tick season (April through October), it's important to be mindful of the tick-borne illness that — if left untreated — can lead to long-term neurological problems and body aches. State of play: In 2023, Arizona had 16 documented Lyme disease infections in Cochise, Coconino, Gila, La Paz, Mohave, Pima, Pinal and Yavapai counties. But diagnosing the disease early can be difficult because not all infected people get rashes, and early testing can produce false negatives. ‘A canary in the coal mine:' California dogs increasingly exposed to tick-borne bacteria
Dog owners may need to be on alert for a disease many have never heard of — anaplasmosis, spread by the same tick that transmits Lyme disease. Anaplasmosis can make dogs feverish or lethargic, turn their nose up at food and lose weight, but many show no sign of illness at all. In rare circumstances, though, dogs can bleed from the nose, have neck pain and suffer seizures. The percentage of dogs across California that tested positive for exposure to the bacterium that causes anaplasmosis skyrocketed in the last five years, nearly tripling between 2021 and 2024, according to data from the nonprofit Companion Animal Parasite Council. Humans can get the disease too. Dogs get more tick bites and are tested more often for vector-borne diseases than people, so they can be sentinels for their owners. 'It's a canary in the coal mine,' said Brad Ryan, a professional services veterinarian at Antech Diagnostics, a company that offers testing and other services to vets. 'When the prevalence starts to go up in the animal population, we know that the public health risk has, by default, also gone up.' Anaplasmosis and Lyme disease are spread by western blacklegged ticks. More than half of California counties are labeled as high infection risk, including Santa Barbara and San Diego. The rise began after several years of decline. In Los Angeles County, which is deemed moderate risk, about 1.2% of dogs are now testing positive — more than double the 0.5% five years ago. The Companion Animal Parasite Council believes its numbers are an undercount, estimating they are only capturing 30% of the parasite activity in a given geographic region. Climate change is among a cocktail of factors fueling an increase in tick-borne illnesses across the country, as warming temperatures allow parasites to march into new areas and lengthen their season. In temperate California, experts say the risk is year-round. Western blacklegged ticks are migrating into Southern California from the northern part of the state. Meanwhile, brown dog ticks — vectors for the bacterial infection Ehrlichiosis — are trekking north from Mexico into Southern California. The good news is that both pups and people afflicted with anaplasmosis typically recover quickly with antibiotics. But some experts say awareness of the threat is trailing in Southern California, an area not historically known for being a tick haven. 'Anaplasmosis is not just an East Coast problem; it's very much here in California,' said Dr. Sunjya Schweig, founder of the California Center for Functional Medicine. 'Unfortunately, the doctors don't always recognize that, so it's really hard sometimes for people to get the right care.' Relative to other parts of the country, the prevalence of anaplasmosis among dogs in Southern California remains low, with the parasite council forecasting roughly 1% to 2% this year. However, there are hot spots along the state's northern coast, some with rates of 8% or more. Western blacklegged ticks thrive in moist, cool environments. Experts disagree about the prospects for their future spread. They're unlikely to go gangbusters in arid SoCal, in the view of Janet Foley, a professor of medicine and epidemiology in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. They do show up in hospitable zones in places like Malibu, Ventura and San Diego, she said. But Ryan thinks the ticks could proliferate in the region. 'I always joke, unless your vet clinic is set up right in the middle of Death Valley National Park, where you hardly get any rain at all throughout the year, there's nothing that's going to stop the establishment of these western blacklegged ticks, or deer ticks, across Southern California,' Ryan said. A report from the California Department of Public Health shows a rise in confirmed and probable anaplasmosis cases in people in recent years. Though the raw numbers are low, the figure roughly doubled between 2020 and 2021 and has remained elevated through 2023, the year of the most recent report available. In 2023, almost all the 21 cases — which included eight patients from L.A. County — were linked to travel to Northern California or other parts of the U.S. Foley said areas including New England, New York, Minnesota and Michigan are seeing a dramatic increase in anaplasma. 'So we're going to see more cases here, in dogs and people, because there's going to be more travel-imported anaplasma.' Local factors may also be linked to the trend. People are building deeper into animal habitat, slicing up terrain in ways that can upset the ecosystem, Schweig said. Predators such as bobcats may no longer be able to hunt for rodents and birds — tick hosts — in pocket parks or suburban landscapes. So the small animals and their parasites thrive. Getting tested for illnesses spread by ticks may be easier if you walk on four legs than two. 'We have more options, honestly, on the veterinary side,' said Ryan, of Antech. He recommends that vets screen dogs for common vector-borne diseases in annual wellness exams, and that dog owners put their pets on year-round flea, tick and heartworm prevention medication. In the human realm, Schweig described a huge fight over appropriate testing and treatment, 'like a religious battle,' between groups such as the Centers for Disease Control and the Infectious Diseases Society of America 'versus people like me' and the Bay Area Lyme Foundation, where he serves as a scientific advisory board member. 'We're saying, hey, there is a big problem. It's much more common than we know. The tests are crummy. There's a lot of sick people who aren't being diagnosed.' He called the vet community 'more open minded' about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. 'Unfortunately, when you go to the human doctor they do not ever routinely offer these tests, unless you, like, pull this tick off of you and you have a fever.' Ticks are active throughout the year in California, but risk typically peaks in the spring when the biting arthropods are born, and in fall, after the first rains. Many humans are infected when they're nipped by nymph ticks, a period in their life cycle when they're roughly the size of a poppy seed and barely visible to the naked eye. Why Lyme disease cases are rising in Ohio
Justin Timberlake's recent diagnosis is putting a spotlight on Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness with staggering growth in Ohio over the past 15 years. Why it matters: Awareness of early symptoms, such as a rash and fatigue, can help patients catch cases early and treat them with antibiotics. If left untreated, the bacterial infection can lead to long-term neurological problems and symptoms like heart palpitations, arthritis, facial palsy and body aches. By the numbers: There were nearly 1,800 cases reported in Ohio last year, and around 1,200 so far this year. That's up from 40 in 2010. A post-2022 spike is largely due to a change in U.S. reporting requirements — but cases here were climbing before the change, with 615 in 2021, Ohio Department of Health data shows. The disease remains hard to diagnose and likely significantly underreported. Between the lines: Climate change is helping ticks survive longer, find new hosts and spread into new habitats. Ohio's cases started climbing around the time the blacklegged tick that transmits Lyme disease started appearing here, state and OSU researchers found. One silver lining: Only 3% of Ohio's cases in recent years have been recorded in Franklin County, making the local risk lower than in other areas. To help curb severe cases, the OSU Extension opened a tick-testing laboratory this year that detects diseases for $50, with results in 72 hours. Stay safe: Perform a "tick check" and shower after being outdoors, especially in the wooded or brushy areas, per the lab.
