Hackers target Liberal Party's social media after first female leader Sussan Ley's first major speech
Hackers posted explicit photos of women during a crude takeover of the Liberals' social media accounts overnight prompting an apology from the party.
The hack came just hours after the Liberal's first female leader Sussan Ley vowed to lead a party 'proudly for women' in a historic National Press Club address.
The unauthorised material was posted to their Facebook and Instagram accounts at around midnight and was removed within 10 minutes.
'The matter was urgently raised with the Australian Cyber Security Centre and with Meta overnight. We apologise for any offence caused,' the party said in a statement.
The Opposition Leader said she wanted to boost the number of women in her party's ranks in her first major speech on Wednesday, after years of criticism over female representation.
'We must be a Liberal Party that is proudly for women and made up of women. Our party must preselect more women in winnable seats so that we see more Liberal women in federal parliament,' she said.
'Now, I'm agnostic on specific methods to make it happen, but I am a zealot that it does actually happen. Current approaches have clearly not worked, so I am open to any approach that will.'

The 41-year-old won her unlawful termination case when Justice Darryl Rangiah handed down his decision in a courtroom full of her supporters. He found the ABC breached Australian employment law by dismissing the journalist for reasons that included her political opinion. 'Justice Rangiah, who ruled the ABC had unlawfully sacked journalist Antoinette Lattouf, found the decision was made by former ABC head of content, Chris Oliver-Taylor, 'to appease pro-Israel lobbyists' who would 'inevitably escalate their complaints',' the original post read. The Dockers' 30-year-old captain shared the post while a host of his teammates were, around the same time, instead using social media to react to the announcement of a two-year contract extension for Dockers young gun Murphy Reid. One Fremantle fan on X posted, 'most Freo players choose to reshare the news of Murphy Reid extension'. 'Alex Pearce decides to share ABC Antoinette Lattouf story.' In April, Pearce was slammed by a leading Jewish organisation for sharing posts by Northern Irish band Kneecap. The rap trio had made anti-Israel comments at Coachella. Kneecap's post, which was later shared on Pearce's Instagram story stated that the band's 'only concern is the Palestinian people', and that no media spin would change that. It continued: 'The 20,000 murdered children and counting. The young people at our gigs see through the lies, they stand on the side of humanity and justice. And that gives us great hope.' The Fremantle skipper also shared another excerpt from the same post, part of which said: 'We know there are massive numbers of Jewish people outraged by this genocide just as we are.' The Australian Jewish Associations used social media platform X to condemn 29-year-old Pearce's posts 'AJA condemns the captain of Fremantle @freodockers for promoting a group who has praised terrorist groups and for spreading lies about the Jewish state,' it wrote. Pearce's Instagram story drew criticism from some Dockers fans, who said the defender's actions had left them angry.

Federal Liberal Party apologises for sexually explicit images shared on social media after accounts ‘hacked'
The federal Liberal Party has apologised after sexually explicit images were posted to its social media accounts late last night. Multiple images of large-breasted women in borderline see-through bikinis were posted as stories on the Liberal Party's Instagram and Facebook accounts around midnight last night. One of the images was of a Brunette woman wearing a cowboy hat and a pink bikini with the caption '30 viral & weird photos that you can find online' separating it from a second lewd image that was cut off. Another is of a blonde woman in a white see-through bikini with 'before' in large letters, and at the bottom of the post was the start of a second image with 'after' written in Green. The images appear to be AI-generated. The Liberal Party's federal secretariat said the images had been posted after their accounts were hacked. 'Overnight, the social media account of a contractor used by the Party was hacked leading to the posting of unauthorised material on the Liberal Party's Meta accounts at around midnight,' a Liberal Party spokesperson told 'All material was removed within 10 minutes of it being posted and the matter was urgently raised with the Australian Cyber Security Centre and with Meta overnight. 'We apologise for any offence caused.' It is unclear how many of the 360,000 people who follow the pages viewed the images, but screenshots of the images were taken and shared by other social media accounts. 'I'm not sure this is what Sussan Ley meant when she said at the National Press Club yesterday that women will be prominent in the party,' one social media user said on X. The posts come less than a day after new leader Sussan Ley gave a major press club address in which she addressed the party's need to attract more women. Describing herself as a 'zealot' for increasing the number of women in the Liberal Party, Ms Ley said she would work with every state division of the Liberal Party to 'ensure we preselect more women for the 2028 election'. 'As the first woman leader of our federal party, let me send the clearest possible message: we need to do better, recruit better, retain better and support better,' she said. Shadow Minister for Cyber Security Melissa Price said this 'demonstrates that no one is beyond being hacked, not even political parties.' "I refer to the Liberal Party's statement that the unauthorised content was removed within 10 minutes and I trust the party will take measures to ensure this does not happen again".
