Family of teenager tragically killed in Cork crash thank 'all those who helped'
The family of a 13-year-old girl who sadly died following a crash at a motor racing event in Cork over the weekend has thanked 'all those who helped' after the tragic incident.
Lauren O'Brien of Knockane, Terelton, who attended secondary school in Macroom in Co Cork, sadly lost her life on Sunday afternoon following a crash at an Autograss racing event at the Castletown-Kinneigh track in Enniskean, Co Cork.
The alarm was raised at around 3.30pm when her car went out of control and crashed into a barrier at the track.
Gardaí and paramedics rushed to the scene and efforts were made to save the life of the teenager.
Lauren's family have now thanked 'emergency services, the Cork Autograss Community and all those who helped' on RIP.ie.
Lauren will be dearly missed by her loving parents, Timmy and Therese, her adoring siblings Josh and Shannon as well as her grandparents, aunts, uncles, many extended family members and wide circle of friends.
The young girl's funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, and her family have requested donations to West Cork Rapid Response in lieu of flowers. Tributes have poured for Lauren O'Brien (Image: RIP.ie)
Tributes have poured in for Lauren, whose secondary school described as "a beautiful girl, inside and out, bubbly, fun-loving, kind, caring, a loveable rogue', in a post on Facebook.
Her "vivacious spirit and the ever-present twinkle in her eye will be fondly remembered forever by all at McEgan College," the school said.
"She will be missed dearly by her classmates, friends and teachers and our entire school community," the statement added.
They expressed their sympathies to "her parents Therese and Timmy, her brother Josh who is a second year student at our school, sister Shannon, and all those who loved Lauren and had the privilege of knowing her."
Meanwhile, Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident. Anyone who may have camera footage and were attending the event between 3pm and 4pm yesterday are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

Man arrested after petrol station staff threatened during knifepoint robbery
A man has been arrested by gardai in connection with an armed robbery at a retail premises in south Dublin earlier this week. According to gardai, a man entered a filling station in Ballybrack Village with his face covered and brandishing a knife at approximately 5.30pm on Monday (June 2). The armed assailant threatened staff and took a sum of cash before fleeing the scene. During the course of a garda operation carried out on Friday, Gardaí from the Shankill Detective Unit arrested a man in the Shankill area of Dublin in connection with the investigation into the armed robbery. The man was subsequently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and remains in custody at this time at a Garda Station in the Dublin Region. Louth man smashed up car owned by ex partner's new boyfriend ‘in fit of rage'
Keith Shelbourne, Avenue One, Yellowbatter, Drogheda, came forward on a signed plea of guilty to a charge of criminal damage at Ellwood, Ballymakenny Road, Drogheda, on October 29, 2023. The car he targetted, a 2017 Audi A5, was written off by insurers. He handed over €10,000 compensation. The court heard that Mr Shelbourne and the lady had broken up. They had a child together. On this occasion he turned up at a house in the early hours of the morning after seeing her in a car with someone else. He began kicking the Audi and shouted for the other man to come outside. The defendant hit the car with a rock, smashing its windows. He used a child's scooter to smash the rest of the windows and break off the wing mirrors. All the while the victim was videoing the incident which was reported to Gardaí at 1.05am. Gda Dara Quinn said that Mr Shelbourne, who has no previous convictions, accepted that he smashed up the vehicle. He didn't express much remorse. The €25,500 vehicle was written off by the insurance company. The witness agreed with counsel that this occurred 'in a fit of rage'. There was no indication of any violence in the defendant's previous relationship, while the two men were not known to each other and had no further contact. The compensation was accepted. ADVERTISEMENT In a Victim Impact Statement, the man said that he had recently purchased the car. As a result of what happened he had to buy a cheap van to get to work. His insurance premium had more than doubled from €450 to €950. It was stated on behalf of the accused that he had shared access to his son and that the relationship with the boy's mother was amicable again. He wrote a letter of apology. He regretted the harm he caused. Mr Shelbourne was in full-time work and the sole carer for his mother who had suffered a stroke. It was a substantial amount of compensation for him to put together. He was willing to pay more. Judge Dara Hayes remarked that the context of this was a concern. "An attack on a former girlfriend's new boyfriend. I find that troubling and concerning. She's entitled to move on.' It was a particularly serious offence. Although the word had not been mentioned, he described it as jealousy, The judge said he would seek the guidance of the Probation Service and adjourned sentencing for a report on October 7.
