Massive swarms of bogong moths once resembled rain clouds – then their numbers crashed to earth

The bogong moth was once so abundant it was mistaken for weather. During Sydney's Olympic Games in 2000, a swarm of bogong moths attracted by stadium lights was so huge that meteorologists mistook it for a rain cloud.
But the species known as 'deberra' in Taungurung language – an insect with deep cultural and ecological importance, but which is smaller and lighter than a paperclip – has not returned to those numbers since the population collapsed by up to 99.5% in the two years before 2019.
In February the environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, decided against listing the species as threatened under federal conservation laws, citing gaps in data and uncertainties about the moth's population due to limited monitoring and its migratory nature. The bogong moth has been on the global endangered list compiled by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature since 2021.
Prof Brendan Wintle, a lead councillor at the Biodiversity Council and a conservation ecologist at the University of Melbourne, calls Plibersek's decision 'very disappointing' given that most experts agree the species is in trouble.
Every spring, bogong moths migrate hundreds of kilometres to escape the summer heat, travelling from low-lying breeding grounds in southern Queensland and western New South Wales and Victoria to mountainous caves and rocky crevices in the Australian Alps.
'They do that without ever having done that before,' Wintle says. 'It's quite unique for such a small animal to travel such a long distance.'

While bogong moth numbers have improved, they remain well below levels recorded before the crash. Wintle says the shift from 'hyper abundant' to scarce could have catastrophic consequences for alpine ecosystems.
The species is under pressure from the climate crisis, he says, and from land clearing for farming. Bogong moths rely on cold temperatures at the top of mountains for a period of dormancy to complete their life cycle. But those places are rapidly warming.
The moths are widely known and recognised but scientists say there are 'fundamental knowledge gaps' about where they breed, how much their population has fluctuated and the threats they face. They are calling for significant funding to plug knowledge gaps and to work out how to protect the species.
The population decline has ecological and cultural implications. Bogong moths are a crucial food source for the mountain pygmy possum, a critically endangered species and Australia's only hibernating marsupial.

Dr Marissa Parrott, a senior conservation biologist at Zoos Victoria, says the possums rely on the moths for important fats, proteins and nutrients after waking from five to seven months hibernating under snow. She says the species is critical to alpine ecosystems because its annual migration brings an influx of nutrients that nourished the soil, fungi, plants and animals.
The bogong moth also is culturally significant to many First Nations people, including the Taungurung people of central Victoria. Matt Shanks, executive manager of bio-cultural landscapes at Taungurung Land & Waters Council, says the high-elevation sites where the moths spend the summer were also important ceremonial and meeting places for Taungurung and other First Nations people. Deberra feature in Indigenous stories stretching back tens of thousands of years.
At the height of its population, the moths were recorded in every state and in the Australian Capital Territory. Wintle says this means saving the species will require nationwide coordination by governments, First Nations communities, land owners, researchers and citizen scientists – a project he says would be on a similar scale to that required to restore the Murray-Darling basin.
A genetic analysis published in the journal Biological Conservation found high levels of genetic diversity in moth populations, suggesting they arrive in the Alps from a variety of breeding sites then mix randomly.
Dr Collin Ahrens, a conservation geneticist and co-author of the paper, says it suggests site-specific conservation measures would be less useful than strategies that supported the species across its entire range, including work to understand and limit farming practices that could be contributing to its decline.
Parrott says there is significant public enthusiasm for bogong moths, demonstrated by members of the public reporting nearly 2,000 moth sightings to a Zoos Victoria citizen science platform, Moth Tracker, between September and December. About half of the sightings have been verified as bogong moths.
She says the data collected could improve understanding of the 'tiny but mighty' moths by tracking movements and population changes.
Dr Kate Umbers, an associate professor in zoology at Western Sydney University and the managing director of Invertebrates Australia, says the moths' Australia-wide distribution is 'great, in a way, because it means everybody can be part of looking after it'.
'They have the potential to get agricultural and conservation scientists working together to solve these 'grand challenges' of biodiversity conservation, around how we manage land effectively, to both feed people and look after nature,' she says.
But Umbers says it will be more challenging to fund and coordinate research and recovery efforts while the species is not recognised as threatened under federal law. In the short-term, she says the assessment process has identified areas in which more data is needed, and emphasised the need for the community to work together to protect the moth and its extraordinary migration.

Scientists are warning the wildlife impacts of a marine heatwave that has driven a catastrophic algal bloom off South Australia are likely to be equivalent to those from the black summer bushfires, and demand a similar response from governments. Experts from five Australian universities say 'one of the worst marine disasters in living memory' requires rapid investigation by federal and state governments to identify any at-risk species and fund emergency interventions if necessary. In a report by the Biodiversity Council, an independent expert group founded by 11 universities, the scientists called on governments to commit to seven actions to respond to the 'foreseeable and even predicted' event and to prepare for 'an increasingly dangerous and unstable future'. As expected, the federal Senate on Wednesday nightestablished an inquiry into the disaster that has killed thousands of marine animals off SA. The Coalition senator Anne Ruston earlier accused the federal and SA governments of being too slow to act on the 'significant environmental issue', 'allowing it to massively escalate into a serious ecological disaster'. While she welcomed this week's assistance packages – with federal and state governments each announcing $14m – she said it seemed 'manifestly inadequate to deal with the impact on the affected communities'. 'It fails to recognise the magnitude of the response needed to both address the problem and deal with the clean-up,' the senator for SA said. 'At a national level this marine heatwave is likely to have an equivalent impact on wildlife as the black summer bushfires, once we consider not just this harmful algal bloom, but also the extensive coral bleaching and mortality on both east and west coasts,' said Prof Gretta Pecl, a Biodiversity Council member from the University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. She noted that governments had previously 'mobilised significant funds' for natural disasters, 'as we saw with the $2bn National Bushfire Recovery Fund, which included over $200m for wildlife recovery measures'. Sign up: AU Breaking News email The federal MP for the SA seat of Mayo, Rebekha Sharkie, said the federal government needed to commit more. 'With respect, if this was happening at Bondi beach, for example, I'm sure we'd be seeing a much larger slice of commonwealth funding,' she said, echoing recent comments from the Greens senator for SA Sarah Hanson-Young. 'Although there's nothing we can do to stop the current bloom, we need additional investment for monitoring and research..' Actions called for by the Biodiversity Council include an immediate investment of at least $10m to start research into the impact of the algal bloom, establishment of a long-term monitoring program of southern reefs – modelled on the $40m 10-year Great Barrier Reef monitoring program – and rapid work to investigate at-risk species, including giant cuttlefish, which have a mass winter breeding event off Whyalla. The council said the government assistance package was a 'welcome start' but was likely insufficient to support and compensate affected communities and businesses and address 'immediate and longer term biodiversity needs'. Pecl said the impact of the event would 'massively exceed the actual boundaries of the physical bloom itself', with cascading consequences for other Australian regions because of the connectivity of oceans and their food webs. 'This harmful algal bloom is just one of the major consequences of the marine heatwave ringing Australia, which has also caused extensive coral bleaching on both east and west coasts with high rates of coral mortality,' she said. The report said the crisis was a 'human-mediated disaster' enabled by the extended marine heatwave and likely fed by a large pulse of nutrient-rich flood water and coastal upwelling. They called on governments to accelerate Australia's decarbonisation efforts, saying minimising ocean warming was 'the most important step in preventing harmful algal blooms' along all Australian coastlines. The report proposed further actions including more work to identify and reduce sources of nutrient and dissolved carbon pollution and restoration and protection of marine ecosystems. A federal government spokesperson said the health and resilience of Australia's oceans were a priority and the government was 'deeply concerned by the widespread marine species mortalities caused by this extreme event'. 'The Albanese Government will continue to work constructively with the South Australian Government when it comes to the devastating SA algal bloom,' they said. 'That's why we have contributed half of the $28m funding package with the South Australian government to support science and research to boost resilience and planning, industry support and clean up efforts.' The Biodiversity Council director, James Trezise, said: 'Alongside rapidly reducing emissions, Australia needs to be better prepared for environmental disasters such as this. 'We should all accept that this is likely to just be the tip of the iceberg for what our future looks like with unmitigated climate change and rapid biodiversity loss,' he said. The Senate inquiry is expected to hand down its report in late October.

Dr Véronique Paris has a very hands-on approach to her research. She slides her bare arm inside a special cage and lets hundreds of mosquitoes bite her – all in the name of science. 'For most of the ones I feed, I just feel a little sensation,' the University of Melbourne medical entomologist says. 'Some species do have a bit more of a mechanical feel to them.' Sign up for Guardian Australia's breaking news email She describes the buzzing cage of mosquitoes as her 'colony', and 'to make sure they stay healthy' Paris feeds them her blood about once a week. 'If I am running an experiment or want to collect more eggs for upcoming work, this can increase to about four times a week.' Her research is focused on reducing the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases to humans, such as the flesh-eating Buruli ulcer – that if untreated can cause disfiguration and tissue loss. Paris enjoys sharing her work – and methods – with her community of 13,000 followers on Instagram. The 35-year-old says she moved to Instagram and away from professional social media platforms such as LinkedIn, or even Bluesky, to 'reach people that are not necessarily already looking for scientific content'. '[It] has been very rewarding and there are lots of people that ask lots of questions,' she says. Paris's interest in mosquito research began when she started her PhD at the University of Melbourne, after moving to Australia from Germany. 'I wanted to do something for the local community and understand local mosquitoes [and] locally transmitted diseases like Ross River virus and Buruli ulcer.' Cases of Buruli ulcer have risen sharply in recent years, from 135 in 2020 to 238 in late 2023, according to the Victorian Department of Health. The disease, which is spreading across Victoria, is also found in far north Queensland and the Northern Territory. While possums have long been suspected to play a role in the spread of Buruli ulcer, a 2024 study provided the first strong evidence linking mosquitoes to its transmission. Paris and other researchers are trying to find out how exactly mosquitoes acquire and transmit the pathogen to humans. 'I was planning big experiments and wanting to have my own mosquito colony, so I felt like I wanted to try it at least once to see if that is something that I can do.' Now it's a part of her weekly lab routine. 'My body has certainly adapted to it … I can feed a cage of mosquitoes and then it's itchy right after, and then I need to be good about not scratching, so I distract myself for about an hour.' Researchers feeding their own colonies is not compulsory, Paris says. 'There will always be volunteers around that can do that, so no one has to feed mosquitoes if they don't want to and that's totally fine.' But outside the lab, getting involuntarily bitten by mosquitoes is a completely different story. Paris says if a mosquito bites her on the ankle while she's in the garden, it might itch for days. Each bite is different, depending on the location on her body and the species of mosquito doing the biting, she says. There are about 300 species of mosquitoes in Australia, how much they itch depends on the person they bite, she explains, adding that the bump and itch is caused by someone's immune response to the bite, so it very person specific. Her top tip? Don't scratch the bite as it only makes the itching worse.
