Khelif, an Algerian boxer, won gold at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Khelif had previously been barred from competing in the 2023 World Championships, after failing a gender eligibility test. She passed all requirements for the Summer Olympics.
The boxer, who says she is not transgender, did not pass a medical test administered by the IBA in 2023. Umar Kremlev, president of the IBA, has made it clear that he believes Khelif should not have been competing.
Now, the IBA is demanding that Khelif return her gold medal.

Now that the truth has come out, that medal should be returned to its rightful owner – a real woman."

The International Olympics Committee does not recognize the International Boxing Association, which has strong ties to Russia.
Meanwhile, IOC president Kirsty Coventry has made it clear that no action against Khelif will be taken.
"It was agreed by the members that the IOC should take a leading role in this," Coventry said recently, according to The Guardian. "And that we should be the ones to bring together the experts and the international federations and ensure that we find consensus.
"We understand that there will be differences depending on the sports. But it was fully agreed that as members, as the IOC, we should make the effort to place emphasis on protection of the female category."

Khelif has maintained that she was a deserving gold medal winner at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
She could be back competing at the 2028 Olympics in the United States.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic among investors to buy a stake in second-tier French soccer club Le Mans

LE MANS, France (AP) — Tennis star Novak Djokovic is part of a group of investors who have bought a stake in French second-tier soccer team Le Mans, along with ex-Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen, the club said Friday. Le Mans said in a statement that they join other new financial investors into the club, including Latin American sports investment firm OutField and Georgios Frangulis, the founder and chief executive of OakBerry. Frangulis is the boyfriend of three-time women's Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka. "The uniqueness of this fund also lies in its contribution from high-level athletes," Le Mans president Thierry Gomez said in the statement. "Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa, and Kevin Magnussen will be part of the adventure.' No financial details were given. Djokovic is the owner of a men's record 24 Grand Slam titles in tennis. The 38-year-old Serb has won 100 career titles overall. Massa won 11 races and secured 41 podiums in his F1 career. When driving for Ferrari, the popular Brazilian was within a whisker of winning the 2008 title, only for Lewis Hamilton to beat him in a dramatic finish at the last race. Hamilton won the title by 98 points to 97. The 32-year-old Magnussen drove close to 200 races in F1, securing one podium and one pole position. But the Danish driver was not retained by Haas at the end of last year when his contract expired. Le Mans soccer club, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, begins its league campaign on Aug. 9. Le Mans — a small city in northwestern France — also hosts the famed 24-hour endurance car race. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Emma Meesseman will suit up for the Liberty against the Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Emma Meesseman knew it was time to come back to the WNBA. She felt most comfortable with New York, so the prized free agent decided to join the Liberty for the final two months of the season. The 2019 Finals MVP, who last played in the league in 2022, arrived in New York a few days ago after getting her visa and then came up to Connecticut for the Liberty's game Friday night against the Sun. 'I know people here. ... I was like okay, New York,' she said. 'Its a big city. Easy to reach. We'll see how I feel. We want to win. I think everyone knows in the W, you never know who's going to win. It's impossible to choose. It's a gamble. I'm the kind of person or player who just wants to be home because I like being home. I like to be around good people. Not saying that's not the case in other places as well.' Meesseman was also looking at joining Minnesota or Phoenix. She spent 30 minutes after shootaround ended working out with assistant Andrew Wade, who Meesseman knows from her time in Washington. She'll suit up for the game, but coach Sandy Brondello said that she'd only play in the case of an emergency. 'It's great to have Emma, she only just got here, we'll get her up to speed. I don't anticipate her playing tonight,' Brondello said. 'She'll dress. She just got off the plane, it's been a busy few days.' Meesseman has watched the WNBA's growth from afar while helping Belgium compete at the FIBA World Cup and the Olympics the last few years. 'It changed. I wanted to try it again and see with all these fans following the new players, new young players,' she said at shootaround. 'I love basketball so I was trying to play as much as I can.' After helping Belgium qualify for next year's World Cup in Germany earlier this summer, Meesseman decided it was time to return to the league. 'It's something I've been thinking about for a longer time, coming back to the W,' she said. 'I know the national team is a priority for me. I didn't sign (earlier) because I wanted to play for the (Belgium) Federation and focus on the EuroBasket. Then it was a matter of timing, visa, making a decision of how I felt. The past few days have been really fast.' Her arrival is a boost for the squad, which will be without Breanna Stewart for a few weeks while she recovers from a bone bruise in her right knee. New York also is without Nyara Sabally (knee) and Kennedy Burke (right calf strain). Meesseman and Stewart are both 6-foot-4 forwards. While she's played with Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Natasha Cloud before as well as was coached by Brondello, Meesseman said that they weren't big on recruiting her. 'I got some texts, but also am a person who doesn't like to be influenced by people,' she said. 'I want to be the one making the decision. Jonathan can confirm I am difficult to reach at times so it was more through my agent.' The Liberty (17-9) are in second place in the standings despite having lost three straight games. They are in the midst of a busy stretch with three games in the next five days, playing twice in Connecticut on Friday and Sunday and then hosting Dallas on Tuesday. Meesseman is a two-time All-Star and helped the Washington Mystics win the 2019 title. She has been focused on leading the Belgium national team since her last season in the WNBA, which she spent with the Chicago Sky. Meesseman played with Natasha Cloud, whom New York acquired in the offseason, in Washington when the Mystics won their championship six years ago. Even without Stewart for the immediate future, the Liberty still have a talented group around Meesseman with Sabrina Ionescu, Jones, Cloud and Leonie Fiebich leading the way. Meesseman has dominated overseas in her time away from the WNBA. She was named the EuroBasket MVP twice in the past three years. She helped Belgium reach the medal round at the Paris Olympics before it lost to France in overtime in the semifinals and then Australia in the bronze-medal game. The Liberty waived guard Jaylyn Sherrod to make room for Meesseman. 'Jaylyn Sherrod is a champion in every sense of the word. She embodies the passion, grit, and relentlessness that define the city of New York,' Kolb said. 'Her rise from undrafted free agent to WNBA Champion is one of the most remarkable stories I've had the good fortune to witness, a testament to perseverance, and a powerful reminder to always push the boundaries and to never give up.' ___ AP WNBA:

The legacy Duncan Scott boasts after anchoring Great Britain to World Championships glory

Duncan Scott's sensational last leg secured a British victory in the men's 4×200m freestyle relay final in Singapore, as the Scottish superstar continues to cement his legacy as one of Britain's greatest ever swimmers. The quartet of Scott, Matt Richards, James Guy and Jack McMillan maintained Team GB's dominance in this event, with victory at the World Aquatics Championships adding to gold medal success at the Olympics in Tokyo and Paris. They also secured Britain's first swimming medal at these championships, as they reclaimed a title that they last won in 2023. Success in Southeast Asia means Scott can add yet another medal to his ever-increasing collection. The Glasgow-born swimmer is now aiming to become the most decorated British Olympian of all time at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. 'We can't think this is normal, this is pretty special,' Scott told The Independent. 'We can't take it for granted at all because that was so hard fought and everyone's kind of looking at us now and challenging us.' With eight medals to his name, Scott is currently joint second with Bradley Wiggins in the list of Britain's most decorated Olympians. The pair are one medal behind retired cyclist Jason Kenny. Scott made history in Tokyo after becoming the first ever British athlete to win four medals at a single Olympic Games. He continued his success in Paris last year, securing a second gold medal in the 4x200m relay. Attention is now inevitable turning to Los Angeles in 2028, with Scott having the chance to go clear as Britain's most decorated Olympian. But the Scottish swimmer is trying to stay focused on more immediate races in the pool. 'It's tough as a 28-year-old, you just try and take each one as you can. I guess it's a good thing and a bad thing, with the way the swimming world works. It's straight on to the next Olympic cycle. It'd be quite cool if there was something else,' said Scott. He took a three-month break from the pool at the end of last year, jetting off for some rest and relaxation in Bali, Australia and Hawaii. The mini-sabbatical coincided with a change of coach, with Ben Higson replacing long-time trainer Steven Tigg, who has stepped up to the role of Aquatics GB Swimming head coach. Time away from the sport has seen Scott return with a more laid-back approach, although he is yet to find the same level of form that he showed last year, missing out on a medal in the 200m individual medley in Singapore. 'This year has been quite nice. I've taken the foot off the gas emotionally, allowing me to enjoy some other aspects of my life,' said Scott. 'That's maybe why performances were a little bit off in the 200 IM (individual medley) final, but that's also the reality of what I kind of thought as well.' Great Britain started Friday's final as heavy favourites and looked worthy of that tag after strong swims from Matt Richards and James Guy. But the race tightened up during Jack McMillan's third leg, with China and the United States reeling Great Britain in. The 25-year-old Belfast swimmer came back strongly in the latter stages of his leg, before handing over in second place for a thrilling finale. Scott flew off the starting block and stormed down the pool, kicking off his anchor leg in phenomenal style. Speaking after the race, the Olympic champion said that he went out harder than usual in order to get ahead and be able to swim in clear water. 'I thought I executed pretty well, but the boys put me in a good position,' he said. 'Jack finished really strong and allowed me to start with a good momentum.' Scott's final leg was clocked at 1:43.82, as Great Britain took top spot on the podium ahead of China and Australia. Relay success ended a six-day weight for a British swimming medal in Singapore, following a number of near misses including Scott's fourth place in the individual medley. Angharad Evan, 22, went close to snatching a bronze medal earlier on Friday evening, but she faded in the closing stages of the 200m breaststroke final. 'I just had to use my heart in the last 25 metres. All my body was numb and it was just my heart that I had to use to get my hand to the wall', explained Evan. 'I ended up being in fifth place, but there is so much more room to improve on that event.' There is still hope of more British success in the Southeast Asian city-state, with Ben Proud securing a spot in the final of the men's 50m freestyle. He will compete for a place on the podium in Saturday evening's session after recording the sixth-fastest time in the semi-finals.
