It's official: AI has gone mainstream. And the numbers prove it: 71% of organizations regularly use gen AI (up from just 33% in 2023), making the adoption of this technology among the fastest in the history of mankind.
As someone in the business of people, I often get asked where a company like mine, one that provides growing companies with virtual assistants, belongs in an era dominated by AI. The answer is, AI enhances what we do, but it doesn't replace the value of real human relationships.
If you see AI as a tool rather than a threat, it can unlock countless opportunities to bring more humanity to your workforce—one that increasingly operates through digital screens.
Bridging The AI Adoption Gap
Like most tech revolutions before it, the use of AI started as a grassroots effort—and has been adopted by more employees than many leaders realize. It's a bottom-up pattern of adoption that has CEOs around the world increasing investments in AI, but there's a delta in what they're contributing and what they're getting credit for.
Turns out, 40% of employees think their IT department is behind AI implementation. While being a glory hog is unbecoming, business leaders need to communicate their AI plans, processes and goals to increase trust—in their leadership and plans—and ensure adoption at scale within their organization.
When AI use becomes more consistent at every level from the top-down, the impact and ROI inevitably become more measurable as a result. Together, leaders and employees can better justify the investments CEOs are already making—this time with the aim of reducing disconnected technology and achieving clearer, more measurable outcomes.
Setting Up Systems For Human Success
No matter what you call them—friction points, inefficiencies, redundancies—the beauty of AI is its power to remove them from business (and life) in a way and at a scale never seen by humanity before. When we embrace AI's ability to streamline processes, we empower real people to embrace more thoughtful and strategic tasks that not only contribute to company growth and development but their own as well.
Before any employee or employer starts running toward that kind of impactful ROI, it's important to build a foundation that allows the entire organization to first crawl, then walk.
It's simple: Get everyone working inside an AI platform. Doesn't matter the system(s); what does matter is that employees are implementing substantial use into their daily work tasks. Doing so not only increases familiarity and proficiency, but has also been reported to improve productivity, quality of work and customer engagement.
Whether it's industry knowledge, company data or company processes, it's critical to teach the robots to "think" about internal business information like one of your own.
Using an AI platform that is enhanced with your company data will replace AI hallucinations with informed and actionable insights that help instead of hindering the work of employees.
Instead of relying on SaaS providers built on old software models with closed tech, make your own. Pull all the company data you can from customer relationship management (CRM) systems, marketing platforms, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial platforms and human resource information systems (HRIS) to create a repository of data that an enterprise AI model can layer on top of.
This establishes a single source of truth for the tech (and for your employees) to ensure everyone and everything is working with the same information, unique to the company and its current state of business, which 72% of CEOs believe is key to unlocking the value of gen AI.
The mistake many non-technical CEOs make is building a new tool or technology on top of their AI data warehouse to explore new ideas that aren't proven or planned for. Instead, they should be starting small—looking for opportunities to recoup their investment made in the first three steps.
Look for a use case where AI can improve the client or employee experience, the product or the service. This is where implementing AI agents on your data warehouse can address targeted challenges and produce a clear return on investment (ROI).
Growing Talent Through The Use Of Tech
The rise of gen AI is not replacing human talent—it's elevating it. When thoughtfully integrated, AI becomes a partner in onboarding, training and upskilling employees so they can confidently take on bigger, more complex challenges while the tech manages the routine ones.
We know 87% of business leaders anticipate that at least a quarter of their workforce will require reskilling as a direct result of AI and automation. So why not let AI help in that process?
Onboarding, for instance, no longer needs to be a bottleneck. The challenge of training remote workers or virtual assistants has largely been addressed through tools like ChatGPT, which can generate customized onboarding programs in minutes.
These AI tools effectively act as in-house trainers, HR support, data analysts, coaches and even thought partners, freeing up human capacity for the high-value, strategic work like creative problem-solving and leadership.
Because I run a virtual assistant company, it's a common misconception that I want humans to do every task. The important distinction here is that I want humans doing the critical tasks.
It's not about choosing humans over AI or AI over humans; it's about creating an environment where they coexist and collaborate in a way that creates efficiencies for your company while opening the door to more opportunities for your employees.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman isn't shy about discussing the future of AI. As the CEO of a market leading company, his predictions carry plenty of weight, such as his worry that AI could make things go 'horribly wrong,' or that AI agents will completely transform the workplace. Nor is billionaire Mark Cuban, who also sees vast changes to an AI-dominated workplace. Altman's recent remarks to finance executives at a Federal Reserve conference on large banks and capital requirements included his belief that entire job categories will be eaten up by AI. He said customer service is all but completely ready for an AI takeover right now, as reported by the Guardian newspaper. 'That's a category where I just say, you know what, when you call customer support, you're on target and AI, and that's fine,' he said. When a user calls a hotline now, AI answers, and it's like 'a super-smart, capable person,' Altman explained, adding that 'there's no phone tree, there's no transfers. It can do everything that any customer support agent at that company could do. It does not make mistakes. It's very quick. You call once, the thing just happens, it's done.' You may have already encountered an AI customer service system, or at the very least spoken briefly to one before being forwarded to a person with the info you're seeking. And anecdotally, if Altman's promise of no mistakes proves true, then that's a huge sell for customer service departments—and consumer satisfaction. (We all know how frustrating it can be calling these lines.) What an AI can offer under these circumstances is also clearly defined: customers probably call with a discrete set of common issues, and the AI can be trained on what to do. Fast Company's trending stories delivered to you every day Privacy Policy | Fast Company Newsletters But the next industry Altman said was ripe for an AI takeover is more complex, requiring deep knowledge and empathy, and there are much higher stakes at play. According to the AI CEO, AI is already better than human doctors. It can, 'most of the time,' surpass human physician skills, he argued, suggesting it's 'a better diagnostician than most doctors in the world.' But then he pointed out a very human truth: 'people still go to doctors,' he said, and he added that he felt the same, 'maybe I'm a dinosaur here, but I really do not want to, like, entrust my medical fate to ChatGPT with no human doctor in the loop.' That at least aligns with warnings from medical experts who say that while AI may be useful for medical advice under some circumstances, like helping to make medical notes, it's just too subject to misinformation errors to be trusted to give mental health advice or diagnoses, for example. In fact a group of therapists recently warned of the danger in doing so. Altman also told the bankers that he's worried near future AIs could be used by bad actors, perhaps based overseas, to attack the U.S. financial system. He cited the issue of AI voice clones as a direct risk. While he's not predicting AI will steal banking jobs here, he is essentially warning that the entire industry could be upended by AI, used the wrong way. You may think Altman is being unnecessarily doomy here. In this case, you may be more aligned with the thinking of billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban. He's just suggested that in his expert mind, AI will become a 'baseline' workplace skill inside five years. Essentially he thinks that 'like email or Excel,' everyone, from fresh graduates to practiced entrepreneurs, will have to master AI to succeed at their tasks. in an interview with Fortune, Cuban predicted that thanks to the force multiplying effects AI can have, 'we'll see more people working for themselves' thanks to the rise of AI assistants, possibly powered by agent AI tech, which can transform 'solo founders into full teams.' And worse, if you're note already using AI to 'move faster or make smarter decisions, you're behind,' he said. While framed more positively than Altman's statements, a closer look says Cuban is still predicting whole classes of jobs will disappear inside five years. Why would a startup CEO need a personal assistant, a coding expert or a marketing adviser if all those tasks could be done by next-gen AI? advertisement All of this, while interesting, could be dismissed as mere PR for the AI industry, but you should actually care about this expert advice. Altman's warnings could have you looking at what tasks you already feel comfortable outsourcing to an AI tool instead of a human worker. And then, taking Cuban's advice, you should consider taking time to properly educate yourself about the promises and risks of AI technology, and also plan on upskilling or reskilling your existing staff. In just over a month, Apple will introduce the world to a fresh portfolio of iPhones. Rumors have focused on a camera-centric design overhaul for the 'Pro' flagships and a whole new ultra-slim sibling that will adopt the 'Air' branding. It sounds like this year's Apple Watch may not be a showstopper of the Fall launch event, but its successor might turn out to be one that I've been waiting for ages. According to supply chain outlet DigiTimes, the purported Apple Watch Series 12 set to arrive in 2026 could be a massive overhaul, both inside and outside. 'The high-end Apple Watch model launching in 2026 is expected to undergo substantial upgrades and redesigns centered around enhanced sensing capabilities,' says the report. Recommended Videos Citing multiple supply chain sources, the report mentions three key areas of improvement for the 2026 Apple Watch related to battery, biosensing, and aesthetics. Starting with the sensors, Apple reportedly plans to double the number of sensors on its smartwatch, going from four to eight. A big leap for on-wrist biosensing Supplied by TASC, the report notes that the sensors will be arranged in a ring-like shape on the underside, protected by a transparent glass cover. Aside from opening the doors for new health sensing capabilities, the new sensors will reportedly help improve battery efficiency, as well. Now, let's talk about the next-gen biosensing chops. Rumors suggest that blood pressure sensing will finally land on the Apple Watch this year, or next. Apple is most likely relying on the same light-based technique for assessing the blood pressure that we've already seen on Samsung's Galaxy smartwatches. This approach relies on calibration with a medical-grade sensor, while Huawei has developed a micropump system for its smartwatches that works standalone. Older reports claim that the Apple Watch won't tell absolute systolic/diastolic blood pressure values, but will simply warn users about any abnormal spikes or drops. Another promising wellness feature is non-invasive blood glucose level analysis. Apple has been working on the tech stack for years, but due to regulatory concerns and technical challenges, it hasn't served it aboard an Apple Watch, yet. The underlying tech, however, has been in development in other labs for years. In 2022, experts at Georgia's Kennesaw State University reported the development of a noninvasive system of blood glucose level measurement device called GlucoCheck that works in tandem with a mobile application. A year later, Movano revealed an AI-powered needle-free wearable that lets users check real-time glucose data. Michael Leabman, the company's CEO and founder, told Digital Trends that their smartwatch relies on an onboard radio frequency-powered sensor for the job. So far, no mainstream smartwatch brand has delivered on glucose analysis tech, and if Apple manages to pull it off, it would mark yet another huge leap for the company. What else is on the table? The DigiTimes report also hints at big gains in the battery life department. It notes that on the Apple Series 12, 'power efficiency will improve significantly.' I am more excited about this upgrade, which is supposedly made possible by shifting to a next-gen sensor hub. Over the past couple of years, smartwatches running Google's Wear OS software have made big strides in the battery life department. The OnePlus Watch 2 and its successor, owing to their unique dual-OS approach, can easily go past two days without losing any of their functional charm. Samsung's current generation Galaxy Watch 8 series smartwatches also last longer, and in my tests, they comfortably got past a day. With battery saving tools applied, while disabling always-on display and frugal background activity, I got a per-charge mileage close to a couple of days. Apple's smartwatches rarely go past a full day on a single charge. Finally, the 2026 Apple Watch is also said to be in line for a design makeover, a year ahead of a similar treatment planned for the anniversary edition iPhone. The report only mentions 'a significant redesign,' but doesn't go into details about any minute details. Since its market arrival, the Apple Watch has retained the same fundamental design, with the only notable changes being a slimming down of the chassis and the switch to a curved display. Apple is reportedly planning to add cameras to its smartwatch, but there is little clarity whether the 2026 Apple Watch will be the first to get it.
