Canada-U.S. citizen in custody in deadly St. Lawrence River human smuggling case
WASHINGTON — A dual Canadian-American citizen that United States authorities allege was part of a deadly human smuggling operation that left migrants drowned in the St. Lawrence River was arrested last month.
The U.S. Justice Department says 34-year-old Timothy Oakes was arrested as he attempted to enter the United States on June 15.
Oakes, who is from Akwesasne, west of Montreal, will remain in custody following a detention hearing in the Northern District of New York District Court earlier today.
Oakes was indicted in April for conspiring with others to smuggle people from Canada into the United States across the St. Lawrence River and U.S. court documents allege he was a key facilitator.
Documents say Oakes housed a Romanian family of four before they were transported by boat with the intention of landing in northern New York in March 2023.
The boat ultimately capsized, killing all four members of the migrant family and Oakes' brother who was piloting the vessel.

Abbotsford deaths deemed murder-suicide, IHIT says, identifying deceased as 80-year-old couple
An Abbotsford, B.C., home was behind police tape on July 1, 2025, following a 'violent dispute' that left two people dead. (CTV News) Homicide investigators have confirmed the incident that left two people dead inside an Abbotsford home Monday evening was 'a murder-suicide involving intimate partner violence.' Abbotsford police were called to the scene in the 36000 block of McKee Road around 7:45 p.m. and found two deceased adults inside. Police initially described the incident as the result of a 'violent dispute' and said there was no indication of any ongoing threat to the public. The Lower Mainland's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the case, working with the Abbotsford Police Department and the B.C. Coroners Service. In an update Wednesday, IHIT said its investigation so far had shown the deaths to be 'an isolated incident.' The deceased were an 80-year-old man and an 80-year-old woman who lived together at the home, IHIT said. 'This was a tragic incident and a shock to the community,' said Sgt. Freda Fong, in the release. 'We extend our thoughts to the emergency personnel, the family members of the deceased, and members of the immediate community who may be affected by this event.' Gun, drugs seized from man who fell asleep at the wheel: Halifax police
A 21-year-old is facing 17 charges after Halifax police allegedly seized a handgun and drugs from a man who was found asleep at the wheel. Halifax Regional Police officers saw a vehicle back into an unoccupied vehicle in the 180 block of Evans Avenue around 1 a.m. on June 26. When they approached the vehicle, police say the driver appeared to be asleep. The officers woke the man and tried to arrest him for impaired driving. However, police say he resisted and tried to flee on foot, but was quickly apprehended. Investigators allegedly found a handgun, a quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
