Marine Police nab duo for diesel-related offences in Sarikei, Miri; seized over 21,000 litres of fuel
KUCHING (April 24): Marine Police personnel seized over 21,000 litres of diesel and arrested two persons during operations in Sarikei and Miri.
Sarawak Marine Police commander ACP Ab Rahman Mat Hasan said the operation in Miri on April 23 involved a local man caught transporting diesel in a tanker truck without a valid permit.
'The tanker truck was carrying approximately 16,000 litres of diesel worth RM72,000 without authorisation from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN),' he said in a statement today.
He said the second arrest in Sarikei on April 22 involved another local man, who was found with 5,600 litres of diesel at a storage site.
'The fuel was stored in a metal tank equipped with a nozzle pump. Checks confirmed the site lacked any permits, licences or special approval from KPDN,' he added.
Ab Rahman said the both cases have been handed over to the ministry for further action under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
He said under Section 21 of the Act, individuals found possessing, storing, or transporting controlled goods without a permit may face imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
He called on the public to continue channelling information on activities involving the possession or distribution of controlled items without authorisation so that enforcement efforts can be carried out thoroughly and effectively. diesel kpdn marine police miri Sarikei smuggling

RM916,000 worth of e-cigarettes seized in Padang Besar raids
PADANG BESAR: The General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to distribute electronic cigarettes worth more than RM900,000 with the arrest of two men and the seizure of 2,400 cartons in two separate raids on Friday. In the first operation at about noon, a team of officers stopped a van at a roadblock at Kilometre 27, Padang Besar. Northern Brigade GOF commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said checks on the courier van found eight boxes of electronic cigarettes without valid documents, believed to be en route to a house in Taman Kim, Padang Besar. "Based on follow-up intelligence, we raided a house used as a storage facility at 1.30pm and arrested a man who admitted to renting the premises. "Checks inside the house led to the discovery of 28 more boxes of electronic cigarettes, also without valid documentation. "In total, we seized 2,400 cartons, valued at RM916,000," he said in a statement today. Shahrum said the first suspect, a 25-year-old, claimed he was paid to deliver packages he was told contained cosmetics from Kuala Lumpur. "The second suspect, a 55-year-old, admitted to obtaining supplies of electronic cigarettes from a supplier in the capital to sell to local customers over the past three months. Both are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which carries a fine or imprisonment upon conviction, he said. Shahrum added that the GOF would intensify efforts to combat smuggling activities along the northern border and urged the public to provide information on any illegal activities to the authorities.

Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) is weighing a new legislation to regulate e-commerce, after finding sellers' profit margins and commissions on popular online shopping platforms are significantly reduced, particularly during heavily promoted monthly sales events. Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Senator Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the review was essential to keep laws relevant in a fast-changing digital marketplace. Advertisement 'While e-commerce is now part of everyday life for Malaysians and a driver of our digital economy, rapid growth has also brought risks such as fraud, unsafe products, misleading advertisements and cross-border enforcement limitations,' she told a press conference, Saturday. The Ministry convened a stakeholder engagement session at a hotel here involving industry representatives, digital platforms, trader associations, consumer protection groups, legal experts and academics to examine the current regulatory gaps. It was the second such consultation held as part of a broader review. Fuziah said the Ministry's study showed the need for a more comprehensive legal framework to ensure better governance of e-commerce at the national level. Advertisement 'Persistent complaints between 2023 and 2024 included the sale of counterfeit goods, the use of false identities by sellers, misleading advertising, and difficulties in dealing with overseas suppliers, particularly over returns and refunds. 'Many small traders also reported that steep platform-imposed discounts during special sales campaigns had eroded their profit margins to unsustainable levels,' she said. The proposed legislation will rest on three pillars: clearer industry responsibilities, more effective enforcement, and stronger protections for both consumers and small businesses. 'We want an e-commerce ecosystem that is not only innovative, but also safe, transparent and ethical,' she added. The consultation formed part of the Regulatory Impact Assessment process outlined by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation, which requires public input to shape any Regulatory Impact Statement with the Ministry expected to finalise a draft bill soon. Separately, on Friday (Aug 8) Fuziah visited STF Agriculture Sdn Bhd in Tamparuli, to monitor enforcement following the withdrawal of the government's egg subsidy. The move was aimed at preventing profiteering under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. 'KPDN will continue to step up monitoring to ensure egg prices remain reasonable, sufficient supply, and no one takes advantage to reap excessive profits,' she said, adding that action would be taken against violators. Three Batu Enam shops destroyed in midnight fire causing RM200k losses
KUALA NERUS: A midnight fire destroyed three shop premises in Batu Enam here, causing losses exceeding RM200,000 to a traditional medicine business operating for 31 years. Lukman Mamad, 67, said his rented homoeopathy shop was completely gutted along with all medicines and treatment equipment. 'I closed at 6 pm yesterday and was in Losong when my son alerted me about the fire at 11 pm. 'The flames were intense with loud explosions from gas cylinders at the adjacent laundromat,' he told reporters at the scene. The laundromat operator, who owns the building, resides in Kuala Lumpur according to Lukman. Kuala Nerus Fire and Rescue Station chief Azmi Omar confirmed receiving the emergency call at 11.37 pm. Twenty-eight personnel from three fire stations and volunteer units responded to the blaze involving semi-permanent shop lots. 'The food shop sustained 50% damage while the laundromat and medicine store were 70% destroyed. 'Flames spread quickly due to aged wooden structures,' Azmi explained. The fire also damaged a nearby house by 50% before being controlled within 45 minutes. Authorities are investigating the cause and total losses from the incident. – Bernama
