Tribe aims to take form into Jersey T20 World Cup qualifiers

BBC News30-06-2025
Asa Tribe says he wants to take his recent good form for Glamorgan into Jersey's 2026 T20 World Cup qualifiers. The island travel to the Netherlands this week to compete in the final round of European qualifiers for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.Jersey will take on the hosts plus Scotland, Italy and Channel Island rivals Guernsey, with the top two sides in the round-robin event progressing. Tribe, 21, has had a breakout season with Glamorgan, scoring his maiden first-class century against Leicestershire earlier this month, while his 63 not out ensured Glamorgan beat Gloucestershire in the T20 Blast. He is part of an experienced Jersey squad - 12 of the 15-man party competed at the same stage two years ago "I've played some good T20 cricket for Glamorgan this year and I'm looking to transfer that back into a Jersey shirt," Tribe told BBC Radio Jersey."I love playing T20 cricket, the kind of shots you have to play and the tactics and how fast paced it is, I really enjoy it."
Tribe is the first island player to make it into the English first-class game since Jersey became an international nation. He made his international debut for Jersey as a 17-year-old, has played 25 T20 internationals to date and featured in all five of Jersey's games in their 50-over World Cup qualifiers in Namibia in 2023.Tribe says qualifying for a World Cup for the first time - having reached the final round of qualifying four times in the past - would be massive for Jersey. "It would make a huge amount of difference for a small island like ourselves and 100% we'll be giving it our best shot," he said."Who knows, in a T20 tournament like this, things can happen and we'll hope they fall on the right side for Jersey."The right-handed batter is one of just two fully professional players in the Jersey squad alongside Wellington's Nick Greenwood, who was born on the island before emigrating with his family to New Zealand as a toddler.Tribe hopes being the first island-trained player to make a career in county cricket will inspire the next generation of Jersey talent."When I was coming through as a Jersey player, there was always aspirations to play for Jersey on the international stage, but it was very much 'it's that or nothing', and getting into a county cricket set-up was very hard because they pick their own," he said."I didn't really like that and I never really believed that myself, so when I got a first taste for it, I wanted to sort of prove people wrong and know that wasn't the case."I hope what I'm currently doing allows people to see that there's a career outside of Jersey cricket and you can make it as a professional cricketer if you are born there."

Premier League reveal new date for Liverpool's clash with Man United as latest TV selections are confirmed

The Premier League has announced the broadcast picks for October, including Liverpool 's home clash with arch rivals Manchester United. The match between Arne Slot 's champions and Ruben Amorim 's men is among the 19 fixtures rearranged for TV coverage in October. Anfield will host the game on Sunday, October 19 at 4:30pm, with Sky Sports unsurprisingly selecting it to headline Super Sunday after Spurs versus Aston Villa at 2pm. Amorim's side will hope to go one better than last season, when they left the home of their bitter rivals with a creditable 2-2 draw. All three of Liverpool's fixtures in October have been moved after being selected by broadcasters. Their trip to Chelsea on Saturday, October 4 - the last weekend of matches before the second international break of the season - has been pushed back to a 5:30 kick-off and will be shown on Sky Sports. It will follow Leeds versus Tottenham Hotspur, which will now start at 12:30pm after being brought forward from 3pm. However it will be switched to 8pm if Spurs are away in the Champions League the Wednesday before. After welcoming United to Anfield, Liverpool travel to Brentford on Saturday, October 25, where they will come up against former captain Jordan Henderson. The Premier League have tentatively scheduled the match for a lunchtime kick-off but said it would move to 8pm if the Reds are away in the Champions League the preceding Wednesday. United will host Brighton and Hove Albion the same day, with the match kicking off at 5:30pm. Arsenal's only change to their October schedule is the visit to Craven Cottage to face Fulham, which has been moved to 5:30pm on Saturday, October 18. Nottingham Forest versus Chelsea has also been selected for TV coverage on that Saturday and will kick-off at 12:30pm on TNT Sports. Sky Sports are showing 215 matches this season, up from 128, but fan groups have warned the Premier League must give adequate notice of fixture changes in order to prevent problems for matchgoing supporters. Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi to start for Crystal Palace on Thursday amid increased transfer interest

liver Glasner has confirmed that key Crystal Palace players Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi will both start Thursday night's Conference League play-off first leg against Fredrikstad, despite persistent transfer speculation linking them with moves away from Selhurst Park. Eze, a target for Tottenham, and Guehi, reportedly on Liverpool's radar, trained with the squad in Beckenham on Wednesday morning. Glasner was unequivocal about his expectations for players under contract, dismissing suggestions that their commitment might waver amidst the rumours. "It's always the right of a club and the duty of a player to give 100 per cent as long as he is under contract," Glasner stated. He expressed surprise at the media's focus on their potential departures, particularly after their strong performance in the recent draw against Chelsea. "Before Chelsea, I think many of you were surprised that Marc and Ebs started and played almost the whole game," he added. "Most of you will be surprised that they will start again tomorrow because of all the rumours. But again, they are committed. They are committed to the team, they have a contract here, they played a crucial part that we could be so successful, and they will play a crucial part as long as they are here." Glasner emphasised his belief that both players would maintain their professionalism. "Because they are good, they are committed to the team, and when one of the players leave, which I don't know at the moment, then they want to leave as players who always gave 100 per cent for Crystal Palace. This is what they did since they signed, and this is what we expect from them until the end of their contract, whenever this is." Guehi's contract with Palace runs until next summer, while Eze's deal extends to 2027. A release clause in Eze's contract, reportedly around £68million, expired last Friday. Despite further discussions on Saturday, the England international featured for 84 minutes in the weekend's match against Chelsea. Glasner reiterated that the ongoing transfer noise is not a distraction within the squad. "We are not talking every day to Marc and Ebs and also not kneeling down and saying 'oh, thank you that you arrived today'," he explained. "No, we expect it, and they worked hard in training, before the training, after the training, professional, and that's why it's not a big issue here. Of course we know things can always happen. The window is not closed, but we really – and this is a credit to the players, to the group – they are always focused on what we have to do in our games." Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson echoed his manager's sentiments, praising his teammates' dedication. "I think the pair of them are great lads. They're so committed and so professional. It showed at Chelsea, getting to work, they were both phenomenal," Henderson said. "I'm sure they will stay committed throughout and they're always here to help the team. They're part of us at the minute, so we will keep enjoying them."
