Mercedes-Benz is in advanced talks about potentially using BMW's four-cylinder petrol engines for a wide range of future cars, as part of a radical rethink of its ICE strategy prompted by slower-than-expected take-up of its EVs. A Mercedes source has told Autocar the two firms are already at high level of planning and negotiations, and an announcement on whether it will go ahead expected before the end of the year. Autocar has approached BMW for comment. The potential tie-up – first uncovered by Germany's Manager Magazin – would have BMW providing a new generation of petrol engines for use in Mercedes models ranging from the CLA through the GLA, GLB, C-Class, E-Class and GLC to the upcoming 'Little G'. The agreement between the rival companies is being framed as a 'strategic step to cut development costs'. For Mercedes, it would secure a Euro 7-compliant engine supply – crucial to the continuation of ICE models – while helping it to expand plug-in hybrid offerings without further heavy investment in four-cylinder engine development. The move comes as Mercedes phases in its new turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder M252 engine, developed in-house in Germany but produced in China by Horse, a joint venture between Geely and Renault. Already offered in the new CLA, the M252 engine is offered with three outputs – 136bhp, 163bhp and 190bhp – and combined with a an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox housing a 27bhp electric motor. However, insiders note that while the M252 is well suited to mild-hybrid applications, it isn't currently engineered for PHEV or range-extender use – a gap that a BMW-supplied engine could potentially fill. Said engine is rumoured to be a turbocharged 2.0-litre derivative of the four-cylinder B48 engine, which is used in almost every current BMW and Mini model line. Likely to be produced at a factory in Steyr, Austria, the B48 is claimed to offer greater scope than the M252, as it's packaged for both longitudinal and transverse layouts, giving Mercedes more flexibility across its both its compact and mid-sized models. The proposed partnership could also extend to global production hubs, including a potential shared engine plant in the US to sidestep rising import tariffs. Should the deal go ahead, it would mark a historic first: two of Germany's luxury car makers sharing engines and potentially even gearboxes in the longer term.

Handheld gaming consoles are all the rage right now. With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the success of Valve's Steam Deck and the rise of portable PCs, it's no wonder Microsoft is about to enter the space. Microsoft first announced the ROG Xbox Ally at its annual Xbox Games Showcase in June, where it showed off the entry-level ROG Xbox Ally and the more premium ROG Xbox Ally X, developed in partnership with Asus. Now, the gaming giant has announced at Gamescom that both handhelds will launch worldwide this October. While pricing details are still to be revealed, you can already register your interest at a handful of retailers in the UK. Here's everything you need to know about the Xbox ROG Ally and Xbox ROG Ally X release date and more. ROG Xbox Ally release date: When will it launch? On 20 August, Microsoft announced that the Xbox ROG Ally and Xbox ROG Ally X will be released on Thursday 16 October. While the company didn't reveal any pricing or pre-order information, you can already register your interest at a handful of retailers so you're the first to know when the handheld console is available. We're expecting both consoles to be available to pre-order at Amazon, Asus, Argos, Game and Currys, but right now, Smyths Toys and the official Xbox store are the only ones with product pages. You can currently register your interest at Smyths Toys. ROG Xbox Ally price: How much could the handheld cost? In mid-July, the price of Microsoft's new Xbox-branded handheld leaked in a report, and it's bad news for anyone hoping for a bargain. As reported by 3djeugos, the ROG Xbox Ally X could start at €599 for the base model and €899 for the top-spec edition. Those prices have since been backed up by Dealabs leaker Bilbil-kun, who confirmed the figures in a report in late July. The leak was further corroborated by an authorised Spanish Asus retailer, which briefly listed the handhelds online with matching prices. If accurate, that would make it more expensive than the Xbox Series X (£493.48, home console, but roughly in line with the existing Asus ROG Ally device (£449.99, on which the upcoming Xbox handheld is based. Rog Xbox Ally design and features As well as an Xbox button, the ROG Xbox Ally gets longer, contoured hand grips that more closely resemble the Xbox controller. It also gets the Xbox controller's impulse triggers, a pair of custom-built rumble motors located inside the shoulder buttons that deliver more realistic haptic feedback. Handheld gaming PCs have rocketed in popularity in recent years, with the Steam Deck among the most successful examples of the form factor. Like the Steam Deck, the ROG Xbox Ally promises better performance and efficiency by skipping the resource-gobbling Windows operating system and booting into its own dedicated interface. The redesigned Xbox app is more handheld-friendly and acts like a library for your entire PC games library, including games from other storefronts. Because it's basically a portable PC in disguise, the ROG Xbox Ally will support third-party PC apps like Discord and even rival storefronts like Steam, Epic Games and GOG, so your entire PC gaming library will be playable on the new Xbox handheld. ROG Xbox Ally X specs The more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X is designed for 1080p gaming and runs on the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The entry-level ROG Xbox Ally targets a more modest 720p and uses a new AMD Ryzen 2A processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Both use the same display found in the existing ROG Ally hardware, a 7in, 1080p screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR support. Best gaming handheld consoles in 2025 The upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X is based on the current ROG Ally X from Asus, which you can buy right now if you don't fancy waiting around for Microsoft to stick a new button on it. One of the best handheld gaming PCs available today, it pairs a powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 processor with a whopping 24GB of RAM and an efficient cooling system to deliver high-end gaming PC performance in a portable form factor. As it's essentially a tiny PC, you can launch the Xbox app as you would on your laptop or desktop to access your digital games library and stream games via the cloud using your Game Pass subscription. Microsoft promises that the Xbox-branded ROG Ally X will deliver better performance and battery life thanks to its streamlined Xbox interface. Valve's portable is the best budget handheld gaming PC you'll find, untethering your Steam games library from the desktop to let you play anywhere you like. While more recent handheld gaming PCs have outpaced the Steam Deck in terms of specs, display and performance, the console's price drop to just £349 makes it hard to ignore. Still more than powerful enough to play older titles, mid-range and indie games, the Steam Deck can handle recent releases without too much choppiness. There's a newer model with an OLED display (£479, but the £130 premium places it in competition with more powerful handhelds like the ROG Ally.

The mysterious speaker device was caught and shared in two different Reddit threads, earning dozens of upvotes from excited Google fans. One of the poster's said: "Just noticed this in the Made By Google event. "But couldn't find anything regarding that device at the Google website. But I'm definitely excited!"
