Following a forum with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) in Beijing that finished on Tuesday, China and the 33-member bloc agreed to strengthen ties across a range of sectors and expressed support for free trade and a 'more democratic' international system.
The event took place against the backdrop of Donald Trump's global tariffs and other foreign policy initiatives that have raised questions about the future shape of the world order.
On Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing wanted to work with Celac to address their core interests and concerns.
'We believe … the China-Celac forum will firmly stride into its next golden decade, opening a new chapter of the Global South's solidarity,' he told a press conference.

He echoed the language of China's top diplomat Wang Yi, who characterised the event as a 'complete success'.

‘Hong Kong will take action against illegal acts,' John Lee says ahead of June 4

Hong Kong authorities will take action against anyone who threatens national security, the chief executive has warned, as the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown approaches. Asked about the legality of commemorating June 4 by lighting candles or wearing clothing with related slogans in Causeway Bay, where annual vigils had been held for decades, city leader John Lee Ka-chiu said all activities must comply with the law. 'Any activity on any day must comply with legal requirements. No one should violate the law,' Lee said on Tuesday, a day ahead of the anniversary, without mentioning the historical incident. 'Therefore, enforcement agencies will take resolute and stringent action against illegal acts, in accordance with the law.' Chief Executive John Lee reiterates that acts threatening national security are serious crimes. Photo: Elson Li Lee was the first official to comment on the government's stance on commemorative activities in 2025, a year after the city's domestic national security law – known as Article 23 of the Basic Law, the city's mini constitution – went into effect.

Ex-England Sevens star Simon Amor returning to Hong Kong to take up performance role

Former England Sevens star Simon Amor is returning for a second stint with Hong Kong, after being appointed as the new executive director of performance and representative rugby. The 46-year-old briefly took charge of the senior men's side in June 2021 as interim head coach ahead of the Covid-delayed Asia Rugby Championship, leaving six months later to become technical director of Japan's Sevens programme. Amor, who worked as the attack coach for the England XV's side when Eddie Jones was in charge, joins with Hong Kong preparing for the most important six weeks in the team's history. A place at the men's 2027 World Cup awaits the winners of this year's championship, and Amor is expected to be at Hong Kong's first game, away to the United Arab Emirates on June 14. Amor's remit will also include guiding the women's bid to qualify for the XVs World Cup, and helping both sevens squads try to reach an Olympic Games. 'I am delighted to be returning to Hong Kong China Rugby at an incredibly exciting time in the organisation's proud history,' Amor said in a statement released by HKCR.
