Cops warn against fake QR code fraud

Time of India2 days ago

Jaipur: Rajasthan Police Wednesday cautioned public against a new method of cyber fraud involving fake QR codes, urging shopkeepers and customers to stay alert. Fraudsters are sticking counterfeit QR codes over genuine ones at shops, diverting payments to their own bank accounts instead of the shopkeeper's, they said.
According to Shantanu Kumar, SP
Cyber Crime
, the cyber wing released an advisory explaining this emerging scam. People using payment apps like Paytm, PhonePe, or Google Pay are being tricked when they scan these fake codes, unknowingly transferring money to criminals.
In most cases, shopkeepers realised something was wrong only when no payment notification was received, but by then the customer left and the transaction was complete.
This delay made recovery of money nearly impossible.
Rajasthan Police advised shopkeepers to place QR codes in secure, tamper-proof spots, preferably within their line of sight. They should remove the codes at night and inspect them regularly for signs of tampering.

2 get 7-yr jail for knifepoint robbery in '22

Panchkula : The district court Friday sentenced two men to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for robbing a few people of cash and an iPhone at knifepoint three years ago. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the convicts. The convicts, Kuldeep Singh alias Soni and Sulkhan, are from Karanpur village in Kalka here. The complainant, Padma Tsewang, was staying on rent at Adarsh Nagar in Mohali's Naya Gaon. He came from Nubra in Leh-Ladakh. In his complaint to police on April 17, 2022, Padma said he, along with his friends and his sister, were going towards Pinjore from Naya Gaon in his car when two persons on a bike blocked their way at a place beyond Prempura near Khera village. The bike bore a Haryana registration number (HR49H-3294). Padma said he came out of the car and asked the two bike-borne men as to why they blocked their car. To this, they brandished a knife, prompting his friends in the car to also step out. Fear gripped all of them, and the assailants snatched Padma's mobile phone and demanded the password for his Google Pay account at knifepoint. Out of fear, the complainant gave away the password, and the assailants transferred Rs 1,400 from his account to theirs after obtaining the UPI PIN from him. They threatened to kill them if they reported the incident to anyone before speeding away from the scene. Later, they reported the matter to Pinjore police, which registered a case against unidentified persons. Subsequently, police arrested both accused and recovered the snatched mobile phone from their possession. Fintech start-up Decentro to flip back to India; raises Rs 30 crore

BENGALURU: After PhonePe and Razorpay, now Decentro, the API banking platform, will shift its parent entity from Singapore to India over the next 12-18 months. The decision reflects a broader trend of Indian fintech companies choosing to domicile in India. "This flip is a strong statement of our commitment to India and our belief in its capacity to foster and scale global financial infrastructure companies. We are building not just for India, but from India for global opportunities,' said Pratik Daudkhane, Co-founder of Decentro. Fintech start-up Decentro, which handles over Rs 50,000 crore in annual payment volumes, on Friday announced that it has raised Rs 30 crore in its Series B funding round. So far, the company has raised a total of 8.19 million dollars. The round was led by InfoEdge Ventures, with participation from Stargazer Growth—backed by Groww CEO Lalit Keshre—and existing investors including Uncorrelated Ventures. The funding comes at a time when Decentro has turned profitable. The company said it will use the fresh capital to drive enterprise adoption, improve its product capabilities, and strengthen go-to-market efforts across financial institutions such as banks, NBFCs, fintech firms, and digital lenders. 'This fund raise allows us to double down on what's working well; deep partnerships with enterprise customers and building products that power mission-critical financial flows. India is where it all started, and we want to make this our long-term base with the eventual flip,' said Rohit Taneja, Co-founder & CEO of Decentro. Decentro's plans come at a time when Indian fintechs are increasingly choosing to base themselves in India. Recently, unicorn Razorpay moved its domicile from the US to India and will pay about Rs 1,275 crore in taxes. The company is aiming for an IPO before the end of the calendar year 2026. In 2022, another fintech player, PhonePe, also shifted its base from Singapore to India, with its investors paying Rs 8,000 crore in taxes to complete the move.
