Great Northern cancels $200,000 national park campaign after backlash
Great Northern beer has 'paused' a $200,000 campaign to buy and protect land after the plan upset a vocal portion of its customer base. 4WD enthusiasts had called for a US-style boycott of the company, accusing it of going 'woke' by extending the borders of national parks.
Online media company 4WD TV took to Facebook, calling the move 'disgraceful' and urged its followers to switch to other beer brands. 'Bud Light ring any bells for you?' it added, in an apparent reference to American conservatives boycotting Budweiser beer because it featured a transgender woman in a promotion.
'They have lost me as a customer,' one person wrote in reference to the Great Northern promotion. 'It baffles me that Great Northern Brewing Co. would go against [the] majority of their customers to support inner city activists,' another said.
Great Northern was Australia's second most-consumed beer last year and markets itself with images of people enjoying the great outdoors by fishing and camping.
Although the Great Northern plan was to support non-profit Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife to buy and protect private land, many critics were under the misconception the company wanted to transform state parks into national parks, reducing their capacity to carry out activities like shooting, fishing and off-roading. Others were just annoyed at the concept of increasing the size of national parks.
In a statement, the head of Great Northern marketing, Zac Gelman, explained the money raised would no longer be used to buy land for protection.
'Great Northern's Outdoors for a Cause campaign was yesterday paused following feedback from our passionate drinkers. Our donation to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife will now not be used to buy land to add to National Parks. Our donation will instead be used for the preservation of endangered species,' he said.
'Whether it's hiking, fishing, 4-wheel-driving or just relaxing, Great Northern drinkers use and preserve their precious spots in the great outdoors, and we support them.'
While the campaign did find some support on Facebook, with around 1,300 people responding to the post, the boycott left many TikTok users perplexed. 'Why would anyone be anti-national parks?' one person wrote. 'This is the most pointless boycott ever,' another wrote.
They were responding to a video that Marcus Sutherland uploaded to his Oz Camper account which showed him destroying a can of Great Northern with a baseball bat.
Speaking later with Yahoo News, he said he wasn't publicly supporting the boycott and did not align himself with groups that called Great Northern 'woke', and he was merely sharing information about it using a prop. Sutherland said the issue he was most concerned about was rezoning state forests as national parks.
'My favourite thing to do in state forest is take my two boys, my fiancée, and my dog camping and sit around a lit campfire, cook some food. Then jump in the 4WD the next day and go explore,' he said.
He added, 'I am against changing what we already have governed as state forests to national parks, which is a push that has been happening for quite some time.'

The Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife declined to immediately comment on the situation.
The unaffiliated Victorian National Parks Association, a non-profit group that advocates for nature protection, slammed the boycott as a 'weird campaign' by 'nature-hating groups'. Spokesperson Jordan Crook pointed to a recent poll by Redbridge which found 84 per cent of Victorians say national parks are important, and 80 per cent support the creation of new national parks.
'This again seems like a loud trolling online voice that only reflects the wishes of a very small and entitled group of people,' he said.
'Protecting wildlife and wild places is as Aussie as you can get, national parks protect what's best about the country. Leaving them unprotected leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and inappropriate use."
4WD TV was contacted for comment.

‘Nepo-buyers' are America's new class of homeowners, thanks to parents
An American housing market 'crisis' has some first-time homebuyers turning to the bank of mom and dad to help them achieve the rite of passage. Enter 'nepo-buyers,' who can be described as adult children utilizing either gifted down payments, mortgage co-signs or entire homes and condos from their families. 'Rising home prices, higher interest rates, higher cost of insurance, higher maintenance, just everything being astronomically higher, it's definitely becoming a lot more challenging to become a first-time homebuyer if we don't have some extra help,' Douglas Elliman's Ruthie Assouline told Fox News Digital. 'But almost every buyer that we've worked with that was in that first-[time] homebuyer type of position had some form of parental involvement.' 4 'Nepo-buyers,' those utilizing gifted down payments, mortgage co-signs or entire homes and condos from their families, are entering the housing market. miami2you – Assouline and her real estate team have started noticing a wave of parents or family stepping in to help their children buy properties and have some kind of fighting chance to enter a competitive market. Typically, homebuyers use the 30% rule – or limiting mortgage expenses to no more than 30% of monthly income – to guide their property purchasing decisions. However, a new report from found that affordability in just three of America's 50 top metro areas is such that households that make the median income can scoop up a home that won't go above 30% of their yearly earnings. Additionally, the National Association of Realtors reported that the median age of a first-time homebuyer has now reached 38; and a 2023 Redfin report indicated that 38% of homebuyers under age 30 used either cash gifts or an inheritance for their down payment. 4 According to a 2023 Redfin report, 38% of homebuyers under age 30 used either cash gifts or an inheritance for their down payment. Mdv Edwards – Parent-driven purchases now play a notable role in keeping America's housing market active, especially at entry-level price points that have seen major slowdowns. 'We do work with a lot of empty nesters who have already been well-established in their career and their financial status,' Assouline noted. 'And more often than not, part of the conversation becomes helping their adult children be able to attain their first-time home and talking about realistic expectations of what they can expect in the home that they can not only acquire, but also be able to financially maintain.' 'It could range… from like a down payment to the entire home to maintenance [fees],' she explained. 'It all really varies and there's not a 'one case scenario'… you see that those that do have parental health naturally would have the added advantage, because in the event you were, let's say, in a bidding war, the stronger you can make your terms, the more likely you are to get that property.' 4 'Part of the conversation becomes helping their adult children be able to attain their first-time home,' Douglas Elliman's Ruthie Assouline said about working with empty nesters with established financial status. sutthichai – Focusing primarily on the New York City and Miami real estate markets, Assouline argued she's seen more pros than cons of having the help of mom and dad's money muscles. 'People in general have all become a lot more savvy and a lot more careful with how they spend their money and how they're approaching these acquisitions and these purchases,' she said, 'which, for the majority of people, this is the largest purchase and asset that you have.' 'With parental involvement… they've really been empowering their children to make the right decisions, make sure that they're really doing their due diligence, that they are working with a broker that can help them understand what the market is, what are the comps, what are values, what is it going to be to acquire it, what is going to be maintain it,' Assouline listed. 4 'With parental involvement… they've really been empowering their children to make the right decisions, make sure that they're really doing their due diligence,' Assouline said. Jadon B/ – 'It really helps give you a boost in building your own personal equity, securing your own home. Right now in this crazy world, your home is your safe space and is your protective space. So being able to actually acquire and also maintain that home, that's a huge pro.' 'This is your chance to build your future so that in 20 years from now, when we're in a housing crisis like this again, you'll be able to be that parent to your nepo-[buyer] in the future.'- Ruthie Assouline Some of the nepo-buyer cons include co-ops potentially banning parental support, and being at risk of familial conflict. 'In these co-ops, it varies building by building if you are allowed to accept a parent gift towards the purchase. Some of the buildings do not allow any parental support or help in being able to buy, and some do allow parental support,' the real estate expert said. 'And naturally, if you're buying something with the help of somebody else, that may or may not, and most likely may, include a string that's attached,' Assouline cautioned. 'Whatever that may be, that's all very personal and circumstantial.' Whether you classify yourself as a 'nepo-buyer' or not, Assouline remains bullish about increasing housing inventory nationwide, creating opportunities for first-time buyers not seen in five years. 'Buyers are having more buyer flexibility,' she said. 'Sellers are a lot more amenable to entering into an earnest negotiation… for those that don't have parental involvement, because many, many do not, this is your time and opportunity to enter the housing market… this is your chance to build your future so that in 20 years from now, when we're in a housing crisis like this again, you'll be able to be that parent to your nepo-[buyer] in the future.'

GOP's Comer subpoenas Jill Biden aide in panel's probe of Joe Biden's mental health
1 of 3 | Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., on Thursday issued a subpoena to a former Jill Biden aide in his panel's probe into Joe Biden's mental health. File Photo (2024) by Bonnie Cash/UPI | License Photo June 26 (UPI) -- Republican House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer on Thursday issued a subpoena to a former Jill Biden aide in his panel's probe into Joe Biden's mental health. The subpoena targeted Anthony Bernal, a former assistant to the president and senior adviser to the former first lady, calling for him to appear for a deposition on July 16 as part of Comer's probe into what his press announcement called "the cover-up of President Joe Biden's mental decline and potentially unauthorized executive actions." Comer's announcement on the subpoena said Bernal was reportedly so close to the former first lady that he was referred to as her "work husband." A day earlier, Bernal had notified Comer's panel that he would not take part in its requested interview. Comer on Thursday said that Bernal previously had confirmed that he would appear "for a voluntary transcribed interview" on Thursday. However, Comer said, the White House Counsel's office informed Bernal that it was waiving executive privilege for the committee's investigation. At that, Bernal refused to appear. In a subpoena cover letter, Comer said, in part, to Bernal that "the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform requested that you -- because of your role as a senior aide to former President Joe Biden -- appear for a transcribed interview on June 11, 2025, broadly regarding 'the extent of your influence over the former President and your knowledge of whether the former President was personally discharging the duties of his office.' "Given your close connection with both former President Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden, the Committee sought to understand if you contributed to an effort to hide former President Biden's fitness to serve from the American people," the letter continued. "You have refused the Committee's request. However, to advance the Committee's oversight and legislative responsibilities and interests, your testimony is critical. Accordingly, please see the attached subpoena for testimony at a deposition on July 16, 2025." Bernal was one of the sources cited in Jake Tapper's book Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again. That book also has been referenced by Comer in his panel's investigation into Joe Biden's mental health. In May, Comer announced his investigation, citing general concerns about Biden's age and mental capacity after the president's troubled performances and missteps on the campaign trail, which eventually resulted in Joe Biden withdrawing from his presidential run. Comer's investigation also launched as renewed interest in Biden's health erupted after the former president announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump ordered an investigation into Joe Biden's cognitive state, alleging that White House aides covered up his mental decline.

Congressman calls on Noem, Dr. Oz with plan to 'swiftly remove' 1.4 million illegal migrants on Medicaid
Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, sent letters to two key agency heads with a plan to "swiftly" remove roughly 1.4 million illegal immigrants currently receiving Medicaid in the US. "While Democrats in Congress continue to peddle falsehoods and fear-mongering over so-called 'Medicaid cuts,' they conveniently ignore a staggering truth: over 1.4 million illegal aliens are receiving Medicaid benefits, an unsustainable burden on the American taxpayer," Hunt told Fox News Digital. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz were both recipients of Rep. Hunt's letter this week, which proposed a task force to "identify" and remove the illegal migrants on Medicaid. "I've formally requested the Secretary of Homeland Security to establish a task force to identify those unlawfully exploiting our healthcare system and ensure they are swiftly removed from our country," Hunt added. The Texas Congressman's comments come as President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," which includes a provision stripping illegal migrants from taxpayer-funded healthcare, faces last-minute changes in the Senate. Fox News Digital obtained a document from the Congressional Budget Office sent to two GOP committee chairmen this week with information regarding the "One Big Beautiful Bill" that reads: "About 1.4 million would be people who do not meet citizenship and immigration status requirements for Medicaid enrollment but who would be covered under current law in programs funded by the states." On Thursday, the Senate Parliamentarian moved to strike out current language in the legislation that would exclude illegal immigrants from Medicaid eligibility, but sources close to negotiations tell Fox News Digital that those portions of the bill are actively being re-drafted in an attempt to ensure they are included in the final draft of the bill. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, also addressed the parliamentarian's decision to remove the portions about Medicaid to reporters Thursday morning. "These are speed bumps along the way. We anticipated those and so we have contingency plans," Thune explained. "Obviously, you have to adjust the timing and schedule a little bit, but we're moving forward." Regardless of whether Medicaid is removed from the "One Big Beautiful Bill," Congressman Hunt says that being able to identify the free healthcare-receiving illegal migrants alone is enough reason to remove them from the US. "Through coordinated efforts between DHS and CMS, we can develop an effective approach to identify people based on financial data, residence, or medical records, and then take appropriate action against those violating our immigration laws," Hunt's letter to Noem and Dr. Oz reads. "We must protect American resources for American citizens. End of discussion." Preston Mizell is a writer with Fox News Digital covering breaking news.
