Cambodian Minister: Spread Of Misinformation can Hurt Democracy
Information Minister Neth Pheaktra said the digital revolution has created democratic content, widened the boundaries of the press and expanded the unheard voice.
'But it also reflected misinformation, hate speech, handling bias and the dangerous spread of fake news.

'If we leave it without consideration, it would threaten to destroy the foundations of journalism and democracy,' Pheaktra said in his opening speech of the Asia Media Summit 2025 today, reported Agence Kampuchea Presse, the state media.
The media summit, organised by the Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development, is being held in Siem Reap from July 21 to 24.
'This event is not just celebrating the passing of years, but a legacy built by committed journalists, broadcasters, regulators, policymakers, and innovators across Asia and the Pacific.
'(They) have worked hand in hand to shape a media environment that is resilient, ethical, independent and responsive to the people it serves,' said the minister, according to the state media.
Based on government data, Cambodia recorded about 2,630 fake news cases in the first half of this year.
Last year, 3,621 cases affecting sensitive areas like national security, public order, peace and the economy were reported.

Yunus, who is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, received the doctorate from UKM Chancellor, Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir at Auditorium Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani, UKM Specialist Children's Hospital. "In recognition of your remarkable achievements in reducing poverty and transforming countless lives in the People's Republic of Bangladesh, it is my great pleasure, on behalf of UKM, to present you the Honorary Doctorate in Social Business," Tuanku Muhriz said in his brief royal decree. Delivering his public lecture after receiving the doctorate, Yunus said the award was more than a personal honour, as he viewed it as recognition of the strength, courage and determination of the people of Bangladesh, especially the millions of young and women entrepreneurs. 'This recognition reminds me of my responsibility to work for the dreams of our young people. We have seen time and again that when the most disadvantaged people, especially women, receive small financial support and basic training, they bring lasting change to their communities. 'From working as an economist to founding Grameen Bank, one belief has always guided me: people are not poor because they lack talent or dreams, but because the system never gave them a fair chance. 'Our financial system serves the rich, not the poor. So I created a way for even the poorest to get small loans, start businesses, and change their lives,' said Yunus. The social entrepreneur, economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate is best known for pioneering microcredit and microfinance, which provide small loans to impoverished individuals without requiring collateral, enabling them to start small businesses and break the cycle of poverty.

TVET Reforms Lift Malaysia's Graduate Employability To 95.1 Pct
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reforms have boosted graduate employability to 95.1 per cent, with more than 430,000 students now enrolled nationwide, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid, who is also National TVET Council (MTVET) chairman, said 53.56 per cent of the country's secondary school leavers in 2024 chose TVET as their first option, marking a significant shift in national education trends. "When I was entrusted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in 2023 to chair the National TVET Council, I knew this was more than just a policy role," he said when opening the ASEAN TVET Conference (ATVET) 2025 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
