NYT ‘Connections' Hints For Monday, August 18: Today's Clues And Answers
Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Sunday's: Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to the start of a new week! I'm delighted to be back with you for another Monday-Friday run of this here column. Perhaps you know the drill by now (and if not, welcome!). I like to kick off the Monday editions of this column with a fun, upbeat song that will hopefully at least get your toes tapping and a broader smile on your face. I had two in mind for today and couldn't decide which to go with, so I figured I'd just use them both and slide the second into the daily, column-ending recommendation slot. Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Monday, August 18 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! POOL gave me pause when it came to guessing a group of CUE, SHOT, POCKET and BREAK. That made the pool/billiards-related group seem like a red herring. Sure enough, I realized that CUE went with NOD, PROMPT and SIGNAL, and that got me the yellows. The "watch" words were straightforward too. A little surprised those were the purples! My grandfather was in the Black Watch, so this felt like a nice little opportunity to tip my hat to him with the hint. Anyway, at that point the blues became clear (I wasn't kidding with that hint). The greens were evident too. I'm starting to think the NYT is going a little easy on us before tomorrow, which is game #800. I'm nervously anticipating that one. Anyway, my streak is now up to 171. NYT Strands Hints For Monday, August 18: Today's Spangram And Answers (If The Show Fits)
Before today's Strands hints, spangram and answers, here are Sunday's: Hey, folks! Today's NYT Strands hints, spangram and answers for Monday, August 18 are coming right up. How To Play Strands The New York Times' Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It's available on the NYT website and in the NYT Games app alongside the likes of Wordle and Connections (which we also cover in daily guides at Forbes Gaming). There's a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you'll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue. You'll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links at least two sides of the board, but it may not start or end there. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow. Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it's possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you're playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess. If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you'll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words. Be warned: You'll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you'll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes. What Is Today's Strands Hint? Scroll slowly! Before I reveal the other the full word list, I'll first tell you the spangram and show you where that is on the grid. This is your final spoiler warning! FOOTWEAR Here's where you'll find it on the grid… What Are Today's NYT Strands Answers? Today's Strands theme words are... Here's what the completed grid looks like... Fairly straightforward one today, thanks to the theme hint. However, I got stuck when I only had the letters for ESPADRILLE left. I am not familiar with that! I'm not too ashamed to admit I used an anagram tool to figure that one out, or it would have taken me all day. Also, I think the shape of the spangram could have been more fun here. Solution to Evan Birnholz's Aug. 17 crossword, ‘Sound Off'
Would you believe that I've crossed a pretty big milestone in my puzzling life? Today's crossword is the 500th crossword published in The Washington Post since I began writing puzzles for it in December 2015. That's a lot of puzzles, and many more clues — at least 70,000 of them by my quick back-of-the-envelope math. Of course there are a few crosswords in that 500 that I didn't write since there have been guest constructors on occasion, but I still count 'Heroes Welcome' from Dec. 6, 2015, as Puzzle No. 1 from my time with The Post and today's Aug. 17, 2025, puzzle ('Sound Off') as Puzzle No. 500. Let's keep it going, shall we? I'll be hitting my 10th puzzle job anniversary in December, and Puzzle No. 600 is off on the horizon in mid-2027.
