Caglianone, the No. 6 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft after starring as a two-way player for Florida, hit .322/.394/.553 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in 38 games for the Naturals. The 22-year-old has been used exclusively as a position player so far this year, logging most of his time at first base but also appearing in seven games in the corner outfield spots, six of them in right field. He came into this season ranked No. 60 in Keith Law's preseason top 100 MLB prospects list but has significantly improved over his pro debut in 2024, when he hit .241/.302/.388 in 29 games for High-A Quad Cities and .236/.300/.449 in 21 games in the Arizona Fall League. Law believes it's only a matter of time before Caglianone gets the call to the big leagues.

Law notes that Caglianone has made significant changes since last season.
'Caglianone has seen some structural changes. He's not pitching any more, which is fantastic for letting him focus on hitting, and he's playing right field now, which hasn't been a challenge so far and makes better use of his athleticism — but he's also tightened up his approach at the plate just enough that he's become a much more dangerous hitter already,' Law said.
'He's chasing stuff out of the zone a little less often and it's driving these improved results even against better-quality pitching. He's always had the elite, grade-80 (on a 20-80 scouting scale) power, but he's hitting more and that's going to mean more light-tower homers in games.'
Caglianone is likely to make his Triple-A debut in Salt Lake City on Tuesday when the Storm Chasers begin their six-game series against the Bees.
Caglianone was arguably the most well-known player in last year's MLB Draft class after a standout three-year career at Florida that saw him hit .355/.447/.760 with 75 homers in 165 games and make 34 starts, posting a 5.10 ERA with 170 strikeouts in 148 innings. The Gators reached the College World Series in each of the last two seasons.
The 6-foot-5 left-handed hitter and thrower could be a dangerous addition to the middle of the Royals' lineup later this year. Kansas City is currently last in the major leagues in home runs and 27th in baseball in runs scored. Despite their offensive struggles and dealing with injuries to their starting rotation with Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans currently on the injured list, the Royals are 26-22, 5 1/2 games back of the first-place Detroit Tigers in the competitive American League Central but currently tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the second wild-card spot.

MSU target, 3-star RB Nelsyn Wheeler commits to Illinois following official visit

MSU target, 3-star RB Nelsyn Wheeler commits to Illinois following official visit For a second straight day, a Michigan State running back target has announced he's heading elsewhere. Nelsyn Wheeler of Omaha, Neb. announced his commitment to Illinois on Tuesday. The commitment comes after Wheeler took an official visit to Illinois this past weekend, and one day after he announced he would be cancelling his upcoming official visit Michigan State. Wheeler is a three-star prospect in the 2026 class, and holds a recruiting rating of 85 on 247Sports. He ranks as the No. 75 running back in 247Sports' composite rankings. Michigan State was one of a few schools in pursuit for Wheeler. Kansas, Wisconsin, Cincinnati and Northwestern were a few of the other big-time programs after Wheeler before he committed to Illinois. Wheeler is the latest Michigan State running back target to commit elsewhere -- four-star running back Damon Ferguson of Baltimore committed to Pitt on Monday, three-star running back Michael Dukes of Detroit committed to Rutgers last week, and Kory Amachree of Haslett, Mich. committed to Kansas last month. So Michigan State is back to the drawing board when it comes to a running back in the 2026 class. Brad Marchand embraces Panthers' rat-throwing tradition, which goes back 30 years

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — There's a giant, gold-outlined rat emblazoned on the hat that dangles in Brad Marchand's locker. The scrappy NHL veteran has been likened to the tiny rodent for much of his career, notoriously known as 'The Rat' among hockey fans for his brash play. So when Marchand was traded from Boston to Florida back in March, it didn't take long for him to embrace Panthers fans' longstanding tradition of tossing plastic rats onto the ice after wins.

Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen has knee surgery, expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) — Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen had surgery on his right knee on Tuesday and the team said he is expected to be sidelined for four-to-six weeks. Steffen was injured during training with the U.S. national team in Chicago on Wednesday, causing him to miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Rapids said the operation was on his right medial meniscus. Steffen lost an opportunity to perhaps regain the U.S. starting spot. The 30-year-old started six of 14 World Cup qualifiers ahead of the 2022 tournament, including the last three, then was left off the World Cup roster by then-coach Gregg Berhalter. Steffen played his first national team match in nearly three years in a January friendly against Costa Rica and coach Mauricio Pochettino said last month that Matt Turner, the starter since 2022, was not assured of being his No. 1 choice for the Gold Cup. Turner didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. Matt Freese made his national debut in goal during Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey. ___ AP soccer:
