
Who is Eshan Chattopadhyay? All about Indian-origin professor awarded prestigious Godel Prize
The award was given for his breakthrough research paper titled 'Explicit Two-Source Extractors and Resilient Functions', which addresses a key challenge in computer science: how to generate high-quality randomness from unreliable sources, critical for secure computing and cryptographic systems.
Published initially at the ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC) in 2016, where it also won the Best Paper award, and later in the Annals of Mathematics in 2019, the paper introduced new techniques that have since shaped major advances in pseudo-randomness and complexity theory.
Chattopadhyay completed his BTech in computer science from IIT Kanpur in 2011, followed by a PhD at the University of Texas in 2016. He later held postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley, two of the most prominent institutions in the field.
Named after legendary logician Kurt Gödel, the Gödel Prize is jointly awarded by the ACM SIGACT and the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. It honours papers that have made lasting contributions to the field of theoretical computer science.
The research deals with randomness extraction- a fundamental concept in computer science and cryptography. It focuses on creating reliable randomness from two flawed or weak random sources, a challenge that has implications for everything from encryption systems to algorithm design.
In simple terms, imagine flipping two unfair coins and still being able to extract fair, unpredictable results. That's the essence of what Chattopadhyay and Zuckerman achieved, turning weak inputs into strong, usable randomness.
He told Cornell University that the recognition is an incredible honour. He shared that it feels 'surreal and gratifying' that the paper was placed in that category.

India's Deep Sea Exploration Human Mission: Ahead Of Samudrayaan, Scientists Train In Atlantic Ocean
Indian scientists from National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai participated in deep-ocean human scientific expeditions onboard the submersible NAUTILE Close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing from Red Fort that India will carry out deep sea exploration mission for oil and minerals, India sent its scientists to France this month to get international experience of the same in the Atlantic Ocean. As part of the Indo-French partnership, Indian scientists from National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai participated in deep-ocean human scientific expeditions onboard the submersible NAUTILE developed by the French marine institute IFREMER this month. This has helped our scientists gain operational experience at the deep sea up to 5000 meters depth in the Atlantic Ocean and functional operations. India has developed a human submersible (MATSYA-6000) which will soon carry three persons to a depth of 6000 meters, as part of the Deep Ocean Mission. MATSYA-6000 is designed to include scientific payloads to align with India's scientific exploration and observation activities for deep-sea living and non-living. Progress of the mission The wet harbour trials of MATSYA-6000 were successfully conducted in January-February 2025 at L&T Shipbuilding Facility in Katupalli, near Tamil Nadu. The technological innovations developed for MATSYA-6000 include a bio-vest for real-time crew monitoring, a cognitive digital twin to support during emergency scenarios, an underwater acoustic telephone, ballast management system capable of operating from the submersible as well as a ship, a welded titanium alloy exo-structure, an 80 mm thick electron beam welded titanium alloy personnel sphere with multi-ring configuration and hydrostatically stable and hydrodynamically efficient subsystems with high density Lithium-Polymer-based main power system for propulsion. The realisation of the titanium personnel sphere of MATSYA-6000 has been initiated as an indigenous effort with ISRO. Sub-components such as the base frame and pressure cases are developed with Indian industry partners. India's non-smartphone electronics shipments surge: Over $14 billion exports in FY25, says ESC; total electronics exports up by 32.47%
AI-image India's non-smartphone electronics exports have exceeded $14 billion in FY 2024-25, with total electronics exports reaching $38.57 billion, showing a 32.47 per cent increase year-on-year, as reported by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). Despite smartphones leading exports, non-smartphone sectors have demonstrated significant growth. Various sectors including solar panels, telecom equipment, medical electronics, batteries, and digital processing units have shown substantial contributions, as reported by ANI. Photovoltaic cells generated $1.12 billion, telecom equipment and parts contributed $1.4 billion, whilst rectifiers, inverters, and chargers collectively exceeded USD 2.5 billion. Medical electronics produced $0.4 billion, and PCs and digital processing units contributed USD 0.81 billion. Electronics currently represents 9 per cent of India's total merchandise exports, increasing from 6.73 per cent in the previous year, demonstrating the sector's increasing significance in the nation's economic growth.
