87 villages in Chittapur constituency to be developed at a cost of ₹150 crore
Karnataka's Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT-BT, and Kalaburagi district in-charge Priyank Kharge announced a comprehensive rural development plan worth ₹150 crore covering 87 villages in his Chittapur constituency.
'The work for developing 87 villages is set to commence within the next 15 days,' Mr. Priyank announced while addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation stone for two major drinking water projects under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme – one at a cost of ₹45.53 crore to draw water from the Kagina river to supply Chittapur, and the other at a cost of ₹32.81 crore to supply water to Wadi from the Bhima river – in Chittapur town on May 13. The two projects are expected to be fully operational within the next 18 months providing 125 litres of water per person per day.
'The blueprint for rural development was prepared by reputed institutions to ensure sustainable development. Each village would receive an allocation ranging from ₹1 crore to ₹3.5 crore, depending on the population. Chittapur and Wadi towns would receive ₹150 crore each to develop modern urban infrastructure,' Mr. Priyank said.
Detailing statewide rural development efforts, he said that the development of 8,260 km of rural roads was taken up under the Pragati Patha and Kalyana Patha schemes, and 5,770 Arivu Kendras (knowledge centres) were set up to support rural youth. 'All knowledge centres in the district will be digitised within the next three years,' he said.
Highlighting the contribution of gram panchayats in revenue collection, Mr. Priyank said gram panchayats across Karnataka collected a record ₹1,281 crore in taxes.
'We have established 3,867 crèches where babies and young children of MGNREGA labourers are cared for during the working hours. Presently, over 50,000 children are being taken care of in these centres. We are establishing a ₹25-crore solar grid at Gundagurthi village as part of an initiative to facilitate rural areas to generate their own electricity,' Mr. Priyank said.
'I have brought many development projects to Chittapur constituency. This is not a favour, but my responsibility. I am simply repaying the trust of my voters. When I first contested, some opposed my candidature. Later, even the media questioned the appointment of a Chittapur MLA as IT-BT Minister. But with your blessings, we turned this portfolio into a success story. Now, people expect the IT-BT Minister to be from Chittapur,' he said, affirming his commitment to public service and stating that development work is his foremost duty as an elected representative.
Tippannappa Kamakanur and Jagadev Guttedar, members of Legislative Council; Narasimha Reddy, Executive Engineer of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board (KUWSDB); Guarantee Schemes district Chairperson Chandrika Parameshwari, Chittapur Municipal Council President Annapurna Nagappa, Deputy Commissioner B. Fouzia Taranum, Superintendent of Police Adduru Srinivasulu, Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhanwar Singh Meena, and others were present.

TN to take up 3,360 cr worth sewerage projects in 14 corps
Chennai: As part of efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu govt is implementing underground sewerage work worth 3,360 crore across 14 municipal corporations under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 2.0), launched in Oct 2021, aims to ensure universal access to basic urban services such as water supply, sewerage, and sanitation. In TN, cities including Tirunelveli, Vellore, Dindigul, Salem, Cuddalore, and Nagercoil will benefit from the ongoing sewerage work. More than 3,000 km of sewer pipelines will be laid, along with new sewage pumping stations, enabling over five lakh households to shift from septic tanks to a direct underground drainage (UGD) network. Officials from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department said the works are expected to begin within a month and will take around two years for completion across districts. "Deadlines vary by corporation. The UGD network will also help prevent pollution of local rivers," said a senior official. In total, more than 60 local bodies in TN have received project approvals under AMRUT 2.0, with a sanctioned cost of 14,688 crore, including 4,942 crore in central assistance.

NPCC slams rural dept for ‘illegal' use of MGNREGA funds
Dimapur: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Sunday expressed outrage and concern over the alarming reports of alleged unauthorised and illegal deductions from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) funds, which have been allocated to beneficiaries across the state, by the state rural development department. Condemning the department for its 'deplorable abuse of power', the NPCC urged the minister of the department and the state govt to take immediate and decisive action against the rampant corruption and ensure that those involved are identified and penalised. In a release, the NPCC cited recent public revelations, particularly the damning exposé by the Kacharigaon Phevima village council."This insidious practice of extortion, reportedly demanded as mandatory 'commissions' or 'cuts', has become an entrenched part of the department throughout Nagaland. It is but a natural extension of the deep-rooted culture of corruption perpetuated by the govt in the state," the NPCC said. "We demand accountability and justice for the rural people of Nagaland, who are being robbed of their rightful entitlements due to this criminal exploitation," it said. The NPCC added that these funds represented the lifeblood of rural aspirations, not only driving critical grassroots-level infrastructure development, but also serving as a vital instrument to provide social security to most of the marginalised communities.

Villagers block GP office with thorns over MGNREGA irregularities
1 2 Manvi (Raichur): Residents of Sunkeshwar village in the taluk have blocked the gram panchayat office with thorny bushes since Saturday to voice their concerns over alleged irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme. They claimed that the panchayat development officer (PDO) and other officials disregarded their numerous complaints regarding the shortage of drinking water. "GP staff never come to our village. All operations are managed from Manvi town. What is the point of having a PDO who ignores the community?" one protester remarked. The villagers assert that the panchayat is ineffective and exists merely on paper. Residents also accused the panchayat of significant fraud under the MGNREGA scheme. They alleged that counterfeit job cards were issued, and falsified attendance records were created to embezzle govt funds amounting to crores of rupees. "In reality, no work was accomplished here. Yet records indicate everything is finished," expressed Chand Pasha, a villager, in frustration.
