Abandoned pier to be transformed in £20million renovation – as struggling seaside town to become trendy new hotspot
Plus, the traditional English seaside town with a huge £1.8million pier transformation PIER IN Abandoned pier to be transformed in £20million renovation – as struggling seaside town to become trendy new hotspot Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A STRUGGLING seaside town is set to get a grand £20million facelift including works on its historic derelict pier. Birnbeck Pier has been closed to the public since 1994, but is set to be reopened in the future. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 4 The derelict Birnbeck Pier is expect to undergo major works as part of a £20million project Credit: Getty 4 The pier is the only one in the UK that connects the mainland to an island Credit: Getty The pier is the only one in the UK that links the mainland to an island. Currently, repairs are being carried out on the island sea wall and the 1888 boathouse and the clock tower pavilion. Work on the landside buildings - such as the Pier Master's Cottage, old shell shop and South Toll House - all began in July and are expected to be completed in spring 2026. The ultimate goal of the project is to reopen the pier and island to the public, which would make it a unique destination in Weston-super-Mare. Right by the pier, there are also a number of derelict buildings such as a Grade II Listed Toll House and its extension, known locally as the 'shell shop', that will be restored and reopened. The toll house sits at the southern side of the entrance to the pier and once works are completed, will reopen as an information point that will host exhibitions. The plans to reopen the pier are part of a £20million project to regenerate the town over a decade. The town council's Tourism and Information Services Manager, Warren Parker-Mills, told local media: "I used to spend a lot of time in London and actually, I can almost envisage Weston further down the line to have little pockets of Shoreditch or little pockets of Islington." Other parts of the project include a new waterpark set for this summer. The Old Town Quarry could be turned into an event space too with the potential to host an opera there or ballet, according to Warren. Europe's Biggest Pleasure Pier is in the UK According to 19th century Grove Park - that currently features gardens, woodland walks, rock gardens, ponds and a children's play area - will also be revamped. Plans for the park include redesigning the main entrance with new seating and adding new toilets. The Tropicana event space will be transformed too - becoming a venue with a capacity for 8,000 people, including better food and drink spots. The planning permission for Tropicana was approved in May and also reveals that there will be indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces. The venue is then expected to open some point next year. Since 1937, the venue has attracted many notable events and celebrities. For example, back in 2015, Tropicana was home to Banksy's 'Dismaland' bemusement park, which filled the derelict seaside swimming resort into a dingy Disneyland-like theme park. Also as part of the project, Marine lake will also get improved food and drink choices and the introduction of outdoor swimming. 4 There is still plenty to do in Weston-super-Mare in the meantime, including a bustling town centre Credit: Getty Work on the lake is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Weston-super-Mare still has its Grand Pier which remains open to the public. It costs £2 per person to go onto the pier and there are a number of rides and attractions including the House of Horrors, Freefall and Go Karts. There are number of events on the pier too, including Sunset Sessions and themed party nights. And as for Weston-super-Mare beach, it is long and sandy, and is loved by visitors for its traditional seaside feel. The town centre then features all you would need too, including cafes, restaurants and shops. There are even 'rage rooms' where visitors can 'smash' things in a "controlled and safe environment". Traditional English seaside town reveals huge £1.8million pier transformation THE historic Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth is undergoing a major makeover, thanks to new funding. Opened in 1901, the pier has been a fixture along the Golden Mile seafront. Its former look, with orange lettering and large show advertisements, has been replaced with a sleek, white facade with grey details. This transformation came after Triangle Amusements bought the pier in 2022 and received £1.8 million in funding. The first phase of work included a new amusement arcade and a redesigned front. The pier remains open for business during the summer, hosting comedy acts and tribute bands. A second phase of work, focusing on food stalls and cabins, is scheduled for October 2025. In addition to the pier's changes, Great Yarmouth offers other attractions for a classic British beach break, including Joyland amusement park and the quiet Gorleston-on-Sea beach. The UK's second longest pier is set to finally reopen with a £600billion cash injection boosting the Victorian seaside town's economy. The image showed Slumberdown duvets slashed in price at Tesco's. For Tesco Club card members only - single duvets are reduced from £20 to only £8. Double sized duvets are also reduced from £24 to a better than half price saving of £9.50. The duvets are all 10.5 tog and designed for all year use - and should be perfect for those heading off to dorms. One shopper wrote in the comments: "I need one." Another asked a friend if their child needed one for University. While a third said: "Was in my Tesco but they only had King size left." Huge Change in Sainsburys Sainsbury's has hiked the cost of its dine-in meal deal by a quarter - enraging fans of the chain's fine dining experience at home. I'm 5ft3 & a size 12-14 - my 7 Tesco dresses are an absolute bargain & perfect for a last-minute wedding guest outfit The deal for two people includes four items - a Taste The Difference main, side, dessert and drink - for the new price of £15 with a Nectar card, up from £12 just a few weeks ago. The move follows similar price hikes on rival supermarkets' dine-in deals, with Tesco, M&S and Waitrose also hiking the cost to £15 in recent months. But shoppers have protested, with one saying a 25% hike does not mirror inflation. One customer wrote on "Why are you copying @waitrose and putting up your main meal deal from £12 to £15 without any notice - that's a 25% increase!!!... 'Another supermarket losing my custom." Poundland changing clothing line Poundland is planning to make a big change to its clothing ranges as it carries out a huge shake-up in stores. The discount retailer will start developing its clothing range in-house again - meaning there will be a bigger womenswear selection and more seasonal clothing. Major changes are being brought in at Poundland after it was bought for a nominal £1 fee in June by US investment firm Gordon Brothers. The firm has since announced huge restructuring plans that will see 68 stores close. A spokesperson told Drapers the business previously operated a "successful clothing business" managed by an internal team before it started sourcing through its previous owner Pepco. "We intend to revert to that model after restructuring, with clothing ranges developed in-house for the UK and Ireland markets," they said.

Poundland reveals another 12 stores shutting doors for good as part of restructuring – see the full list of 49 closing
POUNDLAND has revealed the locations of another 12 stores closing this month as part of a huge restructuring. The retailer will shutter the branches across the UK on August 31 after it confirmed 37 others will close this month as well. 1 It comes as Poundland goes through a major restructuring as its new owners look to balance the books. This is the full list of shops shutting on August 31: Blackburn 25 Church Street, The Mall Shopping Centre, Blackburn, BB1 5AF Cookstown Unit 3, Orritor Retail Park, Orritor Road, Cookstown, BT80 8BH Erdington 264-268 High Street, Erdington, Birmingham, B23 6SN Kimberley Kimberley Shopping Centre, 25 Greens Lane, Nottingham, NG16 2PB Horsham 30 West Street, Horsham, RH12 1PB Hull Holderness Unit 8, Kingston Retail Park, Holderness Road, Hull, HU9 2AA Irvine Unit 16B, Rivergate Shopping Centre, Irvine, KA12 8EH Kettering Unit 1, 31-32 The Mall, Newlands Shopping Centre, Kettering, NN16 8JL Omagh 9-11 Main Street Shopping Centre, High Street, Omagh, BT78 1BA Shepherds Bush Units 2-4 The Broadway, West 12 Shopping Centre, Shepherds Bush, W12 8PP Southport 36-40 London Street, Southport, PR9 0TJ Taunton 31 North Street, Taunton, TA1 1LW Poundland has already confirmed the locations of 37 other locations closing this month, as part of plans to shut 68 in total before mid-October. Ten sites will close on August 10 while a further 15 will shut on August 17. Another 12 are earmarked for closure on August 24. Three stores have already shut as part of this list of 68. That means there are 16 more stores to close, although their locations or when they will shut have not been confirmed. Darren MacDonald, retail director at Poundland, previously said: "It is of course, sincerely regrettable that our recovery plans include any store closures, but sadly that's necessary if we're to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores. "It goes without saying that we will work closely with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles." Poundland currently runs around 800 stores across the UK but plans to reduce this to between 650 to 700 over the long-term. Poundland to be sold for JUST £1 as frontrunner for shock takeover is revealed after wave of store closures This includes the 68 branches which are closing as part of the restructuring and other stores which are shutting as leases end and are not renewed. POUNDLAND SELLS UP Poundland was sold in June as part of a deal struck with investment fund Gordon Brothers. But the deal included a major restructuring plan, as well as a cash injection of £80million. In late June, Gordon Brothers laid laid out the details of the plan, which included closing 68 stores and negotiating rent reductions at a number of other locations. The investment firm has also confirmed plans to: Close its frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year Ditch frozen products from stores Reduce the number of chilled food items sold Close its national distribution centre in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026 No longer sell products on its website Provide more womenswear and seasonal ranges These plans, but not the 49 store closures, moving ahead are subject to approval by the High Court this month. Poundland was put up for auction by its owners Pepco in March as it looked to offload the brand. The Polish company had reported weak Poundland sales over the previous six months and cut the brand's trading guidance for the year as a result. Poundland revenues dropped by 6.5% to £830million for the six months to March compared with a year earlier. The brand suffered "challenges across all categories" and had 18 net store closures over the period. Pepco had blamed "highly challenging trading conditions" for the fall in sales.
