It has a top display, it has a bottom display – it's the new laptop from Huawei, called the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design.Huawei's first foldable PC marks a new entry into the foldable computing segment years after Lenovo debuted the world's first foldable PC. This device is also one of the earliest Huawei PCs to run on HarmonyOS 5.Weighing 1.16 kg, the new MateBook Fold measures 7.3 mm when unfolded and 14.9 mm when folded. My flagship phone is barely thinner than that!The computer uses a custom water drop hinge designed for foldable devices, allowing the screen to maintain angles between 30° and 150°. An integrated kickstand supports landscape use without additional accessories.There's an 18-inch tandem OLED LTPO display that folds into a compact 13-inch form factor. It offers a 3.3K resolution (3296 x 2472 pixels), a 92% screen-to-body ratio, peak brightness up to 1600 nits, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
Image by Huawei Internally, the MateBook Fold comes with 32 GB of RAM and offers either 1 TB or 2 TB SSD storage options. While Huawei hasn't confirmed the processor, it is likely to feature a Kirin chip similar to other recent Huawei laptops. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.2, dual-band Wi-Fi, two USB-C ports, and a fingerprint scanner built into the power button. It also has an 8MP front camera, six speakers, four microphones, and a 74.69Wh battery. A 74.69Wh battery is considered solid for a lightweight, portable laptop. Rather than measuring in milliamp-hours (mAh) like smartphones, watt-hours (Wh) is the preferred metric for laptops, as it reflects the total energy capacity regardless of voltage.In general, a battery over 70Wh suggests decent endurance, especially for ultrabooks or foldable devices designed for mobility. Depending on the processor and power management of HarmonyOS 5, this battery could offer several hours of use on a single charge. Huawei hasn't specified expected runtime, but similar laptops with this capacity often last 8 to 12 hours under moderate usage.The foldable PC supports both a virtual keyboard and a bundled physical keyboard. The detachable keyboard includes a touchpad, 1.5 mm key travel, and weighs 290 grams. It is 5 mm thin and can last up to 24 days on a single charge. Users can also pair external Bluetooth keyboards and mice.Huawei also includes a range of accessories: a 140W charger, braided USB-C cable, screen cleaning cloth, a large carrying bag, and a smaller pouch for accessories. It's the kind of accessory that makes me smile!Available in Black, Blue, and White, the MateBook Fold is priced at CNY 23,999 (~$3,300 when directly converted) for the 1 TB model and ~$3,700 (when directly converted) for the 2 TB version. That's substantially more expensive than Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold 16, which launched at $2,899. The MateBook Fold will officially launch on June 6, but is already available for pre-order!

The sales of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses have more than tripled in the first half of this year, and it looks like there's no one to challenge them. Meta's partner in the smart glasses development, EssilorLuxottica, just released its financial results for the second quarter and the first half of 2025, and Bloomber reports that they're glowing. The company says the sales of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have grown more than 200% in the first half, and the revenue for the second quarter grew 7.3% compared to last year. Smart glasses are still a small part of both Meta and EssilorLuxottica's businesses, but both companies seem to have high expectations about them. In June, they announced a successor to the Ray-Ban model – the Oakley AI performance glasses – and the expectations for them are big. The company is also working on the Orion AI Glasses, which will feature a display. Recent rumors also pointed to a possible Ray-Ban model with a display, which might be released later this year. Apple seems more focused on the XR segment with rumors of an Apple Vision Pro 2. Whenever Apple joins Meta, it'd be late, but so far, there aren't even very specific rumors about such a move from the Cupertino giant. Samsung is also more focused on a different type of device. The company has announced it might be re-entering the market with Project Moohan, which would be a mixed reality headset. However, that might not be the company's vision for the future if recent reports turn out to be true. I love the idea of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, despite my privacy concerns. It appears I am not alone, and consumers also like them, so I'd guess it's only a matter of time before we see more competition, which would be utterly exciting.

The iPhone has undoubtedly come a long way since it was first released more than five years ago. There is no question that the world changed with the launch of the iPhone on June 29, 2007. As the proud owner of the OG iPhone in 2007, I could see that once Apple replaced the iPhone's connectivity with AT&T's slow-as-molasses EDGE with cutting-edge 3G speeds, the device would become a mobile monster. Things were so slow with EDGE connectivity that the only way to watch a YouTube video clearly was when you could find a Wi-Fi connection around you. Even worse, if you were using the Safari browser, you could not make or receive a call at the same time. If someone tried to call you while you were checking out the New York Times website, for example, your incoming calls went right to voicemail. In the case of an emergency, that is not good. The A18 Pro powers the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. | Image credit-Apple Since the release of the OG iPhone, Apple has greatly improved the battery capacity from 1400mAh to 4685mAh (with the iPhone 16 Pro Max). The OG iPhone was also equipped with 128MB of RAM compared to 8GB on all iPhone 16 models (for Apple Intelligence purposes). The rear camera on the OG iPhone was 2MP compared to the 48MP Wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro Max (along with the 48MP Ultra-wide camera and the 12MP Telephoto camera). What about the processor? The original iPhone was powered by an ARM11-based SoC from Samsung with a clock speed of 412MHz. For the iPhone 3GS released in 2009, Apple used an ARM Cortex-A8 core Samsung CPU (APL0298C05). Apple moved to a 64-bit architecture for the first time with the A7 chipset used to power the iPhone 5S in 2013. The chip was built by Samsung. The next year, Apple made a shift to TSMC for the A8 chipset used on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This SoC was built on TSMC's 20nm process node. The A9 was a bit unusual since both Samsung and TSMC built the chipset for Apple. The latter built it on its 16nm process node while Samsung used its 14nm process. Despite Samsung's use of a slightly more advanced process node, one benchmark test revealed that TSMC's version of the A9 SoC provided iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus users as much as two additional hours of battery life. This led to the so-called "Chipgate" scandal, and some of those buying new iPhones were demanding a model using TSMC's chipset. We even showed you how to determine which SoC was inside your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus. Apple said the actual variation in battery life between the two chipsets was 2%-3% in TSMC's favor and this was actually backed up by benchmark tests. According to Japanese tech blog PC Watch, using Geekbench to monitor the performance of iPhone CPUs, starting with the OG model in 2007, there is an annual improvement rate of 40%. Overall, from the OG iPhone to the iPhone 16 series, the iPhone CPU has increased in performance by 384.9x. With the improvements we could see with the A19/A19 Pro application processors, the improvement from the OG iPhone to the latest iPhone series could take the improvement to 500x or higher. The A19/A19 Pro will both be built using TSMC's third-generation 3nm process node. Next year's A20 application processor should be the first A-series chips built by TSMC using its 2nm process node. As the process node gets smaller, so does the size of the transistors used on a chip. That increases the transistor density, which measures the number of transistors that can be packed into a specific area of a chip. This number is expressed as millions of transistors per square millimeter (MTx/mm²). A higher transistor density means a chip is, in theory, more powerful and energy efficient than chips with a lower transistor density. After 2nm, TSMC is expected to start mass production of 1.4nm chips during the second half of 2028.

vivo launched the Dimensity 7300-powered vivo Y400 Pro last month, and on August 4, the brand will follow it up with a vanilla model. Note that we are talking about the vivo Y400 5G, not the Y400 4G, which was recently listed on vivo's Indonesian website. vivo Y400 Pro 5G vivo hasn't detailed the Y400 5G's specs sheet yet, but the brand's Indian division has revealed the smartphone's design and said that it will come in two colors - Glam White and Olive Green. We'll know all about the vivo Y400 5G's features, pricing, and availability next Monday. But before that, on July 31, vivo will unveil the T4R in India. vivo has confirmed that the T4R will come with the Dimensity 7400 chip, 50MP primary camera (Sony IMX882), a 4K selfie camera, and IP68 and IP69 ratings. The smartphone will be 7.3mm thick and feature a quad-curved display. The vivo T4R is expected to be a version of the iQOO Z10R, which was introduced in India last week and will go on sale in the country today.
