A mother in Missouri is alleging that her son with autism died while at a daycare owned by a now former city councilwoman
PEOPLE obtained a copy of the redacted lawsuit, which alleges Conrad Ashcraft "suffered a fatal injury" on May 16 while at Poppy's Playhouse 2 in Park Hills, Missouri
In his obituary, Conrad is remembered as a boy who "loved swimming, Toy Story, Ms. Rachel, Cocomelon, and the movie Cars"A mother in Missouri is alleging that her son with autism died while at a daycare owned by a now former city councilwoman.
According to a copy of the redacted lawsuit obtained by PEOPLE, Tara Williams claims that her son, who was later identified as Conrad Ashcraft, "suffered a fatal injury" on Friday, May 16, while at Poppy's Playhouse 2 in Park Hills, Mo.
She claims that an employee of the daycare, who was not named, "through the use of lower extremities, applied weight and pressure" to his "chest and/or abdomen, while he was laying down, in order to subdue" him "in an effort to sleep."
Williams claims that the defendant, Poppy's Playhouse, LLC, "failed to properly train and supervise its employees" and "knew and approved of the technique of using human extreminities and/or other devices to apply weight and pressure to a child's body in an effort to subdue a child into sleep."
Because of this, Williams claims that the day care failed to recognize when her son "was suffocating or had suffocated" and, allegedly, therefore, "was killed and remained laying on the floor of Defendant's facility for hours without any effort to determine his wellbeing."
While not mentioned in the suit, Lacey Hardie, Conrad's aunt, told KDSK that Conrad was nonverbal with autism, noting that his "words were limited" and he had "recently learned to say I love you."
In his obituary, Conrad is remembered as a boy who "loved swimming, Toy Story, Ms. Rachel, Cocomelon, and the movie Cars."
"He also loved pizza and enjoyed spending time with his parents and his family," the obituary reads.
The city of Park Hills confirmed in a statement that the daycare is owned by a member of the Park Hills City Council, which led them to refer the matter to the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department.
"This ensures the investigation is conducted independently and without influence," the statement said. "We understand the community's grief and concern. The city has full confidence in the independent investigation and believes that accountability is essential, regardless of the circumstances."
According to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE, the daycare is owned by Spring Gray. Mayor Stacey Easter said in a statement on Tuesday, May 20, that Gray "submitted her formal letter of resignation from her position as Ward 2 City Council member."
The city of Park Hills also confirmed her resignation in their own statement, expressing that "her decision follows recent developments involving her privately owned business."
St. Francois County Sheriff Jeffrey Crites said in a press release that the sheriff's office "immediately launched an inquiry and continue to work diligently to uncover all relevant facts surrounding the incident."
"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking event," the press release said. It asked anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation remains active.
PEOPLE has reached out to the sheriff's department for comment.
On Wednesday, May 21, KDSK reported, citing the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, that Poppy's Playhouse 2's operating license has been suspended amid the sheriff department's death investigation. The news station said the suspension was immediate, and the daycare had 10 days to appeal the decision. A Google listing for Poppy's Playhouse 2 shows the daycare as "temporarily closed."

Nick Offerman says he and ‘Parks and Recreation' cast ‘heartbroken' over shooting death of Jonathan Joss

Nick Offerman has spoken out about the shooting death of his 'Parks and Recreation' costar, actor Jonathan Joss. 'The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken,' Offerman said in a statement to People. 'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.' CNN has reached out to reps for Offerman for additional comment. On 'Parks and Recreation,' Joss played the tribal elder of the Wamapoke Native American tribe and owner of the Wamapoke Casino. He was fatally shot near his homeover the weekend, according to police in San Antonio, Texas. Police were dispatched Sunday to a location on Dorsey Drive in San Antonio, Texas, for a reported shooting in progress, where officers found Joss, 59, 'near the roadway of the location' and 'attempted life saving measures,' authorities said. The actor was pronounced dead by emergency service responders. A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of murder and an investigation is ongoing, police said. Joss' husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales confirmed his death in a text message to the Associated Press. He said he and Joss were approached and threatened by a man with a gun while checking the mail at Joss' home, which in January was damaged by a fire that also killed their three dogs. 'Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,' de Gonzales said. He and Joss, who married in February, had previously faced 'openly homophobic' harassment, de Gonzales said. The person who killed Joss yelled 'violent homophobic slurs' before opening fire, he added. 'He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,' de Gonzales said. 'Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that the Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation,' San Antonio police said in a statement posted to social media on Monday night. Beyond his work on 'Parks and Recreation,' Joss voiced the character of John Redcorn on 'King of the Hill.' Some of his other credits include appearances in 'Ray Donovan,' 'Tulsa King' and the 2016 film 'The Magnificent Seven.'

Nick Offerman blasts Michael Flynn's son for using Parks and Rec clip in homophobic post

Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman eviscerated Michael Flynn Jr., the son of Donald Trump's former National Security Advisor, over a recent homophobic post on X. On Monday, the first day of Pride Month, Flynn Jr. shared an edited clip from Parks and Recreation of Offerman's curmudgeonly Ron Swanson angrily chucking an old computer monitor into the garbage — except the monitor had been replaced with a rainbow Pride flag. 'Good morning and Happy Sunday! No quotes today. Just wanted to post how I feel about 'pride' month,' Flynn Jr. wrote. 'Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb f***. #HappyPride,' Offerman, 54, replied, referencing the series finale, in which Ron served as the best man at the wedding between his hairdresser Typhoon (Rodney To) and Pawnee Parks staffer Craig (Billy Eichner). His response came as the cast of Parks and Recreation responded to the death of their co-star Jonathan Joss, who was killed outside his burned-down home Sunday after an alleged campaign of homophobic harassment against him and his new husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales. 'The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken,' Offerman told People in a statement. 'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.' Throughout the seven-season sitcom, Ron was known for his allyship to the LGBTQ+ community. Offerman, who later starred as a gay man in a standalone 2023 episode of The Last of Us, previously denounced the homophobia that his storyline generated. 'Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent,' the actor said in his 2024 Independent Spirit Awards acceptance speech for best supporting performance in a new scripted series. 'Stories with guts that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, 'Why did you have to make it a gay story?' We say, 'Because you ask questions like that. It's not a gay story it's a love story, you asshole!' Flynn Jr. is known for making controversial declarations on X. In 2017, he slammed the Women's March in Washington, writing: 'What victory? Women already have equal rights, and YES equal pay in this country. What MORE do you want? Free mani/pedis?' The previous year, he and his father, retired U.S. Army lieutenant general Michael Flynn Sr., made headlines for spreading fake news numerous times. Many of their X posts involved conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and their allies. Flynn Sr. served as Trump's National Security Advisor for 22 days during his first term as president. However, he swiftly resigned after it was revealed that he misled former Vice President Mike Pence and other top White House officials about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the United States.
