CairoScene26-04-2025
From crispy squid to truffled mushroom rice, this weekday lunch packs Japanese-Peruvian flavour into three curated courses.
Chotto Matte, a Nikkei dining spot in Riyadh's King Abdullah Financial District, has just launched a new daily lunch menu that blends Japanese precision with the bold, citrusy flair of Peruvian cuisine. Served from 12 PM to 4 PM every day, the SAR 155 set menu offers three courses and a lineup of fusion-forward dishes designed for midday indulgence.
The menu opens with a choice of starters, from simple, sea-salt-sprinkled Classic Edamame to a fiery twist with Dressed Edamame tossed in teriyaki and chilli, or a warm serving of traditional Miso Soup. Appetisers dive deeper into the Nikkei playbook: Sea Bass Ceviche cured in a punchy leche de tigre, Crispy Squid Tempura with anticucho emulsion, and Yasai Miso Crispy Sushi bring texture and heat, while a Wedge Salad gets an umami lift from its lemon queso dressing.
Main courses don't hold back either. There's the Nasu Miso, a standout aubergine dish glazed in miso and topped with apricot, puffed quinoa and sesame; Asado De Tira, featuring slow-cooked beef short rib with purple potato purée; Black Angus Fillet in a spicy soy caramel glaze; and a vegetarian-friendly Truffled Mushroom Rice finished with Japanese mushrooms and egg yolk.
The finale? Warm Cinnamon Churros served with Dulce de Leche and chocolate hazelnut sauce—an unmistakable nod to South America's dessert scene, with a luxe twist.

Egypt to receive first train for Metro Line 4 in May 2026

Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, has met with the Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, to review the progress of joint projects and discuss future cooperation in the transport and industrial sectors. At the outset of the meeting, Al-Wazir expressed his appreciation for the successful collaboration between Egypt and Japan on various transport infrastructure projects. He emphasized the Egyptian government's commitment to expanding this cooperation, particularly in transport and industry, to support the country's ongoing development. Ambassador Iwai echoed Al-Wazir's sentiments, praising the productive partnership between the two nations. He specifically highlighted the successful implementation of phase one of Metro Line 4, a key project that underscores Japan's significant role in Egypt's transport sector. Iwai also noted the growing interest of Japanese companies in investing in Egypt, citing the country's favorable investment climate. The discussions also touched on expanding cooperation in the home appliance sector, particularly between Elaraby Group factories in Egypt and Japanese companies. Additionally, the two sides reviewed the impact of a protocol signed between Egypt's Productivity and Vocational Training Department and the Education Development Fund, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This initiative aims to enhance technical and technological education in Egypt, focusing on electronics and green energy technologies to meet both local and international labor market demands. Al-Wazir stressed the importance of providing practical training for students in Japanese factories operating in Egypt, allowing them to gain hands-on experience alongside their academic education. This, he said, will better prepare the next generation of skilled workers to operate advanced technologies in the country's growing industrial sector. The meeting also covered the ongoing success of the Automotive Manufacturing Incentives Program, which benefits the state, manufacturers, and consumers alike. Al-Wazir highlighted how the program has positively impacted car manufacturers in Egypt, including Japanese brands like Nissan. A key focus of the meeting was the development of Metro Line 4, which is being implemented with the collaboration of Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation. Phase one of the project, which spans 19 kilometers from 6th of October City to Al-Fustat, will feature 17 stations. Mitsubishi is handling the electromechanical works, depot construction, and supplying the rolling stock. The first of the 23 trains for this phase is scheduled to arrive in Egypt in May 2026, with the remaining trains to follow according to a set timetable. Looking ahead, discussions also covered the feasibility study for phase two of Metro Line 4, which will extend 31.8 kilometers from Al-Fustat to New Cairo, connecting with Line 6, the East Nile Monorail, and major transport hubs. Future phases include Phase Three, which will stretch 16.3 kilometers to Hosary Square, and Phase Four, covering 38.7 kilometers to the Capital Airport, with connections to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) network. The continued partnership with Japan is expected to play a critical role in transforming Egypt's transport landscape, with Metro Line 4 serving as a cornerstone of the nation's urban mobility strategy.

Military production minister discusses cooperation with Japan in key manufacturing sectors

Mohamed Salah El-Din, Egypt's Minister of State for Military Production, recently met with Oka Fumio, Japan's Ambassador to Cairo, along with his accompanying delegation, to discuss the progress and prospects of industrial and technological cooperation between Egypt and Japan. The meeting focused on ways to leverage global expertise and localize advanced technologies in Egypt's manufacturing sector, aligning with Egypt's long-term sustainable development goals. Salah El-Din emphasized that the Ministry of Military Production, which is home to numerous companies and units, has the capacity for high-quality manufacturing, technological, and technical innovations. The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry's strong commitment to strengthening cooperation with Japan in the manufacturing sector, particularly in incorporating cutting-edge Japanese technologies into local industries. This approach, he explained, is vital for responding to the current global changes that demand a greater reliance on local production capabilities. Salah El-Din shared the successful history of collaboration between the Ministry of Military Production and Japan, including a notable partnership with Mizuha Company to develop a water extraction device. The device, which extracts water from the air, is produced by Helwan Company for Metallic Appliances (Factory 360 Military). After more than a year of development, the device now boasts a local component rate exceeding 70% and has passed rigorous climate testing. It has also been proven to meet drinking water standards as set by Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population. He also stressed that the Ministry is open to further cooperation with both Egyptian and international private sector companies to enhance existing product lines and develop new technologies. The Minister highlighted the strategic importance of combining Japan's advanced technologies with Egypt's manufacturing, human, and technical expertise, aiming to bolster national production capacity and improve the quality of local industries. This collaboration supports Egypt's broader goals for sustainable industrial development. Ambassador Oka Fumio expressed Japan's dedication to enhancing the longstanding partnership between the two countries. He emphasized Japan's continued commitment to supporting joint projects that reflect both countries' ambitions for mutual success. The Ambassador praised the Ministry of Military Production for its pivotal role in Egypt's military manufacturing sector, noting that its surplus production capacity is being increasingly utilized for civilian manufacturing and export purposes. Fumio reiterated Japan's willingness to collaborate closely with the Ministry and other stakeholders to overcome any challenges and strengthen bilateral economic and trade relations. He also expressed optimism about the growing economic ties between the two countries and stated his intent to invite Japanese investors to explore the Ministry's manufacturing capabilities for future joint ventures.
