Paul Gervase may be an underrated pick-up for the Dodgers

In Dodgers minor league action on Tuesday, it was somewhat of an uneventful day as none of the top-30 Dodger prospects had a particularly memorable performance, though the affiliates split their games.
You would think by now, teams trading with the Dodgers would be, let's say, cautious. Andrew Friedman consistently proves that he has a knack for finding hidden talent. Picking up Adam Serwinowski and Paul Gervase for a 28-year-old catcher who wasn't a top 30-ranked prospect seems unfair. And the Dodgers got an additional throw-in piece in catcher Ben Rortvedt to replace Feduccia. Serwinowski was immediately ranked the Dodgers' third-best pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline and has started his Dodger career with two stellar performances. Which leaves us with Gervase.
If you think Shohei Ohtani is cool because he can pitch and DH, the 25-year-old 6'10 Gervase can pitch and play center. While the Dodgers don't have a need for a shot-blocker, Gervase has put together a strong four-year minor league profile, systematically progressing his way up the minor league levels. Examining his record, it is surprising that Gervase wasn't given a top-30 prospect ranking. His numbers have been consistent at every level, and when you add it all up, this is what it looks like:
115 games, 160⅔ innings, 100 hits, 259 strikeouts, 82 walks, .172 average against.
His walks are a bit high, but in 2025, his strikeout/walk ratio has improved significantly to 70/13 in 47 innings.
With all that pre-ramble, we anoint Gervase player of the day, for two perfect innings in the course of earning the win in the Oklahoma City Comets' 8-6 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Esteury Ruiz hit his tenth home run and drove in three runs as the Comets outscored the Albuquerque Isotopes (Rockies) 8-6. Austin Gauthier had two hits, and Noah Miller drove home two runs. Julian Fernandez closed the game with a perfect inning for his fourth save.
The Drillers defeated the San Antonio Missions (Padres) 8-5. A four-run third inning got the Drillers off to a strong start. The key hits were an RBI single by James Tibbs lll, an RBI single by Kyle Nevin, and a two-run double by Chris Newell. Two-run innings in the fourth and fifth innings by the Missions tied the score. The Drillers retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth and went on to win 8-5.
Wyatt Crowell gave up four runs, and the Loons couldn't solve Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers) relief pitcher Jesus Broca, who closed the game with three and one-third scoreless innings to preserve a Rattler 4-3 win. Kendall George had two hits for the Loons, and stole another base.
Down 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Quakes used the speed of Jaron Elkins to tie the game without the benefit of a hit. A walk, stolen base, and errant throw put Elkins on third base, where he scored on a fielding error by the pitcher. It was all for naught, however, as the first three hitters singled in the bottom of the inning to plate the winning run for the Visalia Rawhide (Diamondbacks), who came away with the 3-2 victory. Top teenage prospects Emil Morales went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, and Joendry Vargas went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts for the dreaded Golden Sombrero. The first Quakes run was also scored without a hit, as five Rawhide pitchers held the Quakes to a single infield hit by Ching-Hsien Ko.
