Barcelona overtake Real Madrid in historic La Liga record after a tremendous season

Yahoo8 hours ago

Barcelona reclaimed their title as Spanish champions thanks to a tremendous campaign that saw them dominate La Liga.
Barça ended the season with 88 points, just four ahead of Real Madrid. Although the table suggests a close race, there was much disparity between the quality of the two teams, with Barcelona notably beating Real Madrid four times in all competitions.

Barcelona have also beaten Real Madrid in the record books, notably becoming the highest scorer of La Liga of all time.

Indeed, thanks to a stunning return of 102 goals this season, Barcelona have now scored 6,579 goals in La Liga, surpassing Real Madrid's tally of 6,561 by 18 goals.
At the start of the campaign, Madrid were ahead by six goals (6,483 to 6,477), but an electric season from Barça's frontline turned the tide.
The charge was led by Robert Lewandowski, whose 27 goals made him the second-highest scorer in La Liga, behind Kylian Mbappe. The Pole's performances have impressed the club, who expect him to continue leading the attack next season as well.

Raphinha and Lamine Yamal also chipped in with 18 and nine goals, respectively.

This isn't the first time Barcelona have topped the La Liga scoring charts historically — they've now done so 25 times, although Madrid have led the tally in 70 seasons.
Since the arrival of Johan Cruyff in 1988, however, Barça have consistently closed the gap, overturning what was once a 139-goal deficit in the 1989/90 season.
This season also saw the Clasico rivalry reach a new balance, with Barça winning all four encounters to level the all-time win record at 105-105.
This is as close as things can get, and it will be interesting to see if Hansi Flick's Barcelona can take the lead next season against a Real Madrid team now led by Xabi Alonso.

Barcelona's Joan García ‘plan' confirmed

The plans of the brass at La Liga giants Barcelona to tie up the signature of Espanyol star Joan García have this weekend been revealed. The info comes courtesy of transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, and reiterates that the transfer can be considered all but imminent. Advertisement The name of shot-stopper Joan has of course dominated the European headlines for several weeks now. This comes after a brilliant individual campaign on the books of Espanyol sparked widespread interest in the services of the 24-year-old. The likes of Newcastle United, Manchester City and Arsenal, from England alone, were all tipped as potential landing spots for Joan. The week to date, however, has seen a clear and dominant frontrunner emerge in the race for the talented shot-stopper. As confirmed by a host of sources across Spain, Barcelona are on the verge of bringing Joan to the Camp Nou. And as alluded to above, on Saturday, an insight into everything from the fee to the timeframe and the Blaugrana's plans for next season has been provided. Advertisement As per Fabrizio Romano: 'Barça plan for Joan García: trigger the €25m release clause next week, complete the move and consider him as immediate key player for first team. Barcelona are currently not considering a loan move anymore. Not an option.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Bills' Josh Allen 'Starting Over' After MVP Win

Bills' Josh Allen 'Starting Over' After MVP Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen had his breakthrough year in 2024 as he won his first NFL MVP award, with the former first-round pick having one of his most consistent seasons since entering the league. Advertisement But that was last year. As Bills OTAs begin, Allen isn't getting the MVP treatment from his coordinator, Joe Brady; it's back to square one. That might sound a little odd given what Josh has accomplished in his career, but Brady wants to continually push his quarterback to greater heights. 'Every year is a new year, we haven't done anything this year, so our approach is you don't get to pick up where you left off,' Brady said. 'Josh embodies that, we're starting over, install one, it's the basics, and we have to master the system at every level. "Sometimes you think you know everything, and then if you really humble yourself, there's always little things that you can pick up. With a guy like Josh, you get the MVP, you're trying to just continue to challenge him. He wants it all, but every year is a new year, we just start over, and he embraces that and rolls with it.' Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh AllenTina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images So Allen's MVP win is now in the rearview mirror with the new season getting closer. Advertisement Defense's will be trying to find any weaknesses in Josh's game from last season, but with Brady's way of doing things, Allen will be a different version of himself, which makes stopping him even more challenging. With the Bills seen as one of the Super Bowl favorites, Allen will be central to anything the offense does well, and having him work on his game in the offseason, and not just "bank" on him being able to replicate his MVP season of last year puts the franchise in a good position moving forward. No one is above learning something new. Even the NFL's Most Valuable Player. Former Bills First Rounder Speaks Out On Reunion

Former Bills First Rounder Speaks Out On Reunion originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's a been a difficult road for Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White over the last few seasons. A former First-Team All-Pro and first round pick by Buffalo, White was once on a career trajectory toward greatness. Advertisement Injuries, though, got in the way. White has struggled over the years, and he played for three different teams in the last two seasons. After a year away from Western New York, though, White was able to sign a free agent deal with the Bills this offseason. For the veteran, a chance to save his career in a scheme he knows well is important. It also helps that he gets to see many of his old teammates and friends every day. White explained that much in his OTA press conference on Tuesday. "Getting back here, seeing him and Dane and Damar, and guys that I've been in battle with for years, it's just like the first day of school when you meet back up with your boys," White said. "The relationship, everything, hit right off like we haven't missed a beat." Advertisement Buffalo has a veteran-centric secondary. They know each other well. The fact they have room to bring in a player like White is fantastic for everyone involved. And it might just bring them the kind of chemistry and leadership needed to finally get over the hump against the Kansas City Chiefs and the AFC as a whole.
