At least 88 per cent of school students turn to Artificial Intelligence (AI) during stress or anxiety, a new survey has found. Teenagers (especially 13-8 years) show the highest emotional reliance on AI, the survey found.
As many as 57 per cent of young Indians use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for emotional support, talking to it when stressed, lonely, or needing advice, the findings of the survey released on 20 August revealed.
This Youth Pulse web survey "Are You There, AI?" is a joint initiative of Youth Ki Awaaz (YKA) and Youth Leaders for Active Citizenship, (YLAC). It collected responses from 506 participants across India in June 2025, employing a digital-first approach to understand how young Indians interact with AI for emotional support. The survey also found that 52 per cent of young women share personal thoughts with AI, double that of young men. AI use for emotional support is far higher among girls and women, especially for sharing thoughts they wouldn't tell others, it said.
The survey was distributed through social media channels, educational networks, and youth organisations to capture diverse perspectives from the target demographic of 13-35 year olds.

The survey also found that 52 per cent of young women share personal thoughts with AI, double that of young men. AI use for emotional support is far higher among girls and women, especially for sharing thoughts they wouldn't tell others, it said.
It also found that 43 per cent of small-town youth share personal thoughts with AI. 'Young people in small cities and towns report the highest emotional engagement with AI, more than their metro counterparts,' the survey noted.
67 per cent of AI users worry about social isolation, while 58 per cent fear privacy risks, the survey found. 'Even as they use it, young Indians remain wary of AI's potential to increase isolation or misuse their personal data,' it noted.
'With over 500 respondents participating in the Youth Pulse launch survey, we have gathered strong preliminary evidence to present our understanding of AI as the new confidant, the midnight therapist, and a mirror to loneliness among youth,' the survey said. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool for emotional use, far ahead of others like Gemini or Character.AI, the survey found.
Youth Ki Awaaz (YKA) calls itself India's largest citizen-led media and civic participation platform, while the Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) says it aims to increase young people's participation in the policymaking process and build their capacity to lead change.
Young people are creating a new emotional geography where AI handles the thoughts too risky for family WhatsApp groups and too embarrassing for friends.
This Youth Pulse study finds that AI is unlikely to replace the need and importance of human emotional support.
'It is filling gaps that always existed but went unaddressed. Young Indians are creating a new emotional geography where AI handles the thoughts too risky for family WhatsApp groups and too embarrassing for friends. Now, this isn't about choosing machines over people. It's about having somewhere to put feelings that don't fit anywhere else,' the report said.
Key Takeaways A significant percentage of students, especially young women, use AI for emotional support.
AI tools like ChatGPT are preferred for sharing personal thoughts among youth.
Concerns regarding social isolation and privacy risks accompany the use of AI for emotional support.

AI Legislators' Forum: An effort to bridge policy, innovation gap by training lawmakers

A group of lawmakers came together at a common platform on Wednesday to launch the Artificial Intelligence Legislators' Forum, an initiative designed to equip Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) with the knowledge, tools, and networks to shape India's tech policy landscape. The Artificial Intelligence Legislators' Forum (AILF) brings together lawmakers, technologists, and policy experts to shape responsible AI governance and fosters informed dialogue on ethical frameworks, regulatory gaps, and emerging AI challenges, said Future Shift Labs, a think tank working on emerging tech, international affairs and governance. Members of Parliament Sujeet Kumar, Shashank Mani, Rabindra Narayan Behera, and Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu attended the launch at the Constitution Club in the national capital. 'We need a humanistic AI that can reach anywhere and to everyone. The market should be decentralised, where AI is in the hands of everyone and anyone with options and not domination,' Shashank Mani said at the launch. Mani is a Bharatiya Janata Party MP in Lok Sabha representing Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. According to the organisation behind the idea, AILF empowers legislators with insights to craft inclusive, future-ready laws that balance innovation with accountability in an increasingly AI-driven world. Rabindra Narayan Behera, the BJP MP from Jajpur seat, spoke about AI and its connection with Hindu mythology. Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, the TDP MP in Lok Sabha, spoke about technology used in agriculture in Andhra Pradesh, where the TDP is the ruling party under Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Sujeet Kumar, the BJP MP in Rajya Sabha, spoke about the flip sides of AI. We need a humanistic AI that can reach anywhere and to everyone. The market should be decentralised, where AI is in the hands of everyone and anyone with options and not domination. As AI increasingly influences public service delivery, economic growth, and democratic processes, the Forum seeks to bridge a critical gap between India's rapidly advancing AI ecosystem and its legislative preparedness, said Sagar is the Director and co-founder of Future Shift Labs. This initiative will annually engage 30 legislators through curated workshops, fellowships, and structured dialogues with experts, enabling informed policymaking on AI's ethical, developmental, and governance dimensions.

India leads the world in AI-driven leadership transformation: Microsoft report

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Indian leaders are moving with confidence and urgency to integrate AI across their organisations, with 93 per cent of those surveyed intending to use AI agents to extend workforce capabilities over the next 12-18 months, according to Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index. Outlining the country-specific findings from the index, it said that India's most forward-looking organisations, what Microsoft calls Frontier Firms, are leading the charge in reimagining work. 'These firms are not just adopting AI; they're redesigning operations around human-agent collaboration," the company said in a release. With 59 per cent of leaders already using AI agents to automate workstreams or business processes across entire teams, the shift from traditional hierarchies to fluid, adaptive structures is well underway, it said. 'This transformation is enabling organisations to scale with agility, speed, and purpose," it said. Puneet Chandok, President, Microsoft India and South Asia, noted that India is firmly in its AI-first era, with AI agility accelerating at an unprecedented pace. 'We're seeing a workforce that's not just adopting AI, but embedding it into the fabric of everyday work — leveraging its speed, precision, and 24/7 availability to drive meaningful transformation. Leaders are scaling operations with AI emerging as a true thought partner, fuelling creativity, fast-tracking decisions, and redefining collaboration," he said. This shift is turning AI's promise into proof and profitability-powered by productivity, innovation, and a fundamentally new way of working, he pointed out. The sample size of the survey was 31000 participants across 31 countries. The findings were part of the global WTI survey. 'With this, developers will be able to impact a wide spectrum of essential enterprise workflows spanning sales, support, collections, and service,' it added. Sachin Bhatia, Co-founder and Chief Growth Officer, Exotel, said, 'Voice agents are on the rise, and most bot providers need robust voice infrastructure to operate seamlessly. In fact, the majority of voice bot–powered companies in India already rely on Exotel for our compliant, reliable, and seamless voice streaming.'
