Jeremy Strong eyed to play Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network sequel
According to Deadline and Variety, sources claim that though no formal offer has been made, the Succession actor is the preferred pick to play the Meta CEO and Facebook founder in the Social Network Part II, alongside The Bear's Jeremy Allen White and Anora's Mikey Madison in unspecified roles.
Aaron Sorkin, who won a best adapted screenplay Oscar for the first film, will write and direct the new entry after years of tinkering with a new angle to the story of Facebook. David Fincher directed the 2010 film, which starred Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg alongside Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer and Rashida Jones.
The Social Network Part II, confirmed to be in development this June, will reportedly not be a straightforward sequel to the story of Facebook's founding in a Harvard dorm room, but rather a follow-up focusing on recent controversy surrounding the social media behemoth. The new screenplay will be based on reporting by Jeff Horowitz for the Wall Street Journal in a series called The Facebook Files, which explored the inner workings and harm caused by the company. The 2021 investigation exposed how internal findings had been buried, as well as Facebook's influence on the January 6 riot and the mental health of teenage users.
Deadline reports that White would ideally play Horowitz, with Madison – fresh off her best actress Oscar win this March – playing the whistleblower at the heart of the articles.
Sorkin had previously teased more overt political leanings for the new script. 'I blame Facebook for January 6,' he said in 2024 on a special edition of The Town podcast, live from Washington DC. When asked to explain why, he responded: 'You're gonna need to buy a movie ticket.
'Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible,' Sorkin said. He added: 'There is supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity – there isn't.'
The Social Network, based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, made $224m worldwide in 2010 and won three Oscars – best adapted screenplay, original score and editing. Eisenberg, who was nominated for his starring role, is yet to be attached to the project.
In a recent podcast interview, Zuckerberg was critical of the film, which portrayed him as calculating and ruthless. 'It was weird, man,' he said. 'They got all these very specific details of what I was wearing, or these specific things correct, but then the whole narrative arc around my motivations and all this stuff were, like, completely wrong.'
Strong received an Emmy for his portrayal of Succession's Kendall Roy on the acclaimed HBO series, among many other accolades. He was nominated for an Oscar this year for playing the fearsome attorney and Donald Trump mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, Ali Abbasi's film tracing the young Trump's rise in 1980s New York. He will next appear on-screen alongside White in the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere, playing the record producer and Springsteen collaborator Jon Landau.

But the latest report reveals that Succession star Jeremy Strong is being eyed by Sorkin to play Zuckerberg, whose company has rebranded as Meta, having had a meeting with the filmmaker. As per The Hollywood Reporter, a source claimed that A Real Pain star and scribe Eisenberg – who was nominated for an Oscar for his work in the first film – had 'passed, at least at this time' on the opportunity to reprise the role. 'As much as I love Jeremy Strong he needs to pass on this. This will not help his career. Without Eisenberg, they should cancel this or find a way into the story without Zuckerberg as a character,' announced @WhereIsBatman89 on X, while another fan insisted: 'Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg or this movie is dead on arrival.' 'We do not want him. Bring Jesse back,' commented Poppy, while @DxTCinema asked: 'Why why why we want Jesse.' Meanwhile fan Chandler called the casting rumour 'odd' and others shared their confusion over a lack of immediate similarity in Strong's and Zuckerberg's looks. 'Ah yes that's perfect they look like twins,' quipped Michael K, while Joelyn added: 'The resemblance is uncanny.' But others were thrilled at the prospect of Strong, who also impressed with his turn as Donald Trump's ruthless mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice – for which he was Oscar nominated for best supporting actor. The Social Network Part II will focus on Facebook's role in the light of the spreading of misinformation ahead of the attempted coup on January 6, 2021 in America, as well as its impact on its young users and violence, and in countries beyond the US too. White would be former WSJ tech reporter Jeff Horwitz, who wrote the publication's explosive Facebook Files series of articles based on her information. There was also recognition that Strong could be in contention for a role other than that of Zuckerberg, as there is said to be a part available as a WSJ editor too. Pat Benatar's daughter Hana Giraldo packed on the PDA with her fiancé Kyle Massey as they stepped out in Malibu on Thursday. Anti-Trump MeidasTouch dethrones mighty Joe Rogan as top podcast in US on YouTube
Joe Rogan has been dethroned as America's number one podcaster on YouTube by a staunchly anti-MAGA, 'pro-democracy' show. After months of sharply criticizing President Donald Trump 's actions, decisions and rhetoric, the left-leaning MeidasTouch Podcast overtook the Joe Rogan Experience for the first time last week, according to YouTube's weekly ranking of top podcast shows. While Rogan's 20.1 million YouTube followers dwarf MeidasTouch's 5.2 million, the podcasting giant's show finished in second place. Progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen and conservative-leaning Sean Ryan's shows also made the top ten. The MeidasTouch Podcast saw its rankings climb in July as Trump attempted to appease Congress, the media, and voters over his administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, with episodes zeroing in on the president's past ties to and comments about the disgraced financier. According to a May New York Times report, with the rise of video podcasting, YouTube is now the most popular platform for listeners with a one-third market share. 'We're thrilled to see our audience continue to grow,' MeidasTouch Network co-founder Ben Meislas said in a statement Wednesday. 'It's not just about the numbers. It's about building a movement powered by truth, accountability, and the people.' On Spotify, however, Rogan remains king, taking the number one spot, while MeidasTouch secured the 73rd spot on the audio streaming company's U.S. podcast charts. A similar trend appeared on Apple Podcasts' U.S. charts, where the Joe Rogan Experience ranks second, bested only by ABC News' Cold Blooded: Mystery in Alaska, and the MeidasTouch Podcast comes in 17th. According to data analyzed by Newsweek using podcast analytics platform Podscribe, the MeidasTouch Podcast was the most downloaded podcast overall between June 7 and July 7. The data showed MeidasTouch amassed 124 million views in that period, with Rogan scooping the second spot with 39.2 million views. The three brothers who produce the show, Ben, Brett, and Jordy Meiselas, say they have seen ratings soar since Trump returned to the White House in January. The siblings formed the self-styled 'pro-democracy' MeidasTouch Network in March 2020 as a super PAC with the sole purpose of preventing Trump from being reelected in that year's presidential contest. While the PAC changed its name to Democracy Defense Action, the MeidasTouch Network name continues to be used as a news organization. By February this year, the MeidasTouch Podcast was ranked the most downloaded podcast, according to Podscribe data. 'We're proving that pro-democracy voices are not just necessary but in demand,' Brett Meislas told Newsweek at the time. 'The American people are rejecting the idea that MAGA is mainstream.' These latest numbers mark a shift from the dominance of Rogan and other conservative-leaning hosts like Adin Ross, Lex Fridman, and Ben Shapiro, many of whom hosted Trump as he courted the so-called ' bro vote ' ahead of the 2024 election. Many of those figures appear to be breaking away from Trump, including Rogan, who said Trump's lack of transparency over the Epstein case is 'a line in the sand.'
