Wisconsin football specialist announces transfer destination

Yahoo07-05-2025

Wisconsin transfer long snapper Eli Stein signed with Cincinnati late last month.
Stein had recently joined the Badgers during the winter transfer window. He reentered the portal during the spring window on April 22, just days after Wisconsin added former Purdue long snapper Nick Levy. Levy's addition signaled a move at the position after Stein, originally an Arkansas transfer, entered spring as the projected starter.

Stein joins the Bearcats with two years of eligibility remaining. He was previously a multi-year starter at Arkansas as a freshman and sophomore in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The Cambridge, Wisconsin, native earned a Freshman All-SEC honor in 2022, then made the Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List the following season. He lost the Arkansas long-snapper starting job during fall camp before the 2024 season, prompting his departure from the program.
The specialist is one of Wisconsin's six spring transfer departures, three of which had recently joined the program during the winter window. Those other two multi-time transfers, tight end Tanner Koziol and wide receiver Mark Hamper, signed with Houston and Cal, respectively. Other departures, wide receiver Quincy Burroughs and cornerback Jay Harper, have yet to announce a transfer destination, while freshman lineman Derek Jensen signed with Iowa State.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin has landed Levy, quarterback Hunter Simmons, offensive lineman Davis Heinzen and tight end Lance Mason in the spring window. Those additions complement the program's impressive winter transfer haul, even considering those three mentioned departures.
The Badgers now enter the 2025 season with Levy as the write-in starter at long snapper. The former Purdue Boilermaker previously began his college career at William & Mary (Football Championship Subdivision), where he started 24 games over two seasons. Levy then started all 12 games for Purdue in 2024 and finished the season with an All-Big Ten honorable mention distinction.

Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.' Alonso's path toward becoming the Mets' career home run leader began when he set the major league record for rookies with 53 in 2019. He has hit at least 34 homers in each of his five full big league seasons and is on pace for 41 this year. 'Pete's been pretty incredible this year. He's been locked in every single at-bat,' said teammate Jeff McNeil, who also hit two home runs Sunday. 'Seems like big situations he's going to do some damage. 'It's fun to watch and I feel like he's putting on a show every time he's at the ballpark.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tearns ACL, will miss rest of 2025 WNBA season

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot tearns ACL, will miss rest of 2025 WNBA season Show Caption Hide Caption Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith are back together again in Chicago USAT's Meghan Hall joins Sports Seriously's Mackenzie Salmon to talk about the duo in Chicago that is Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith. Sports Seriously The 2025 WNBA season hasn't been the best start for the Chicago Sky. And now, the team was dealt a major blow to a star. Guard Courtney Vandersloot suffered a torn right torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Saturday's loss to the Indiana Fever, the Sky announced. She will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season. The injury happened in the first quarter against Indiana in the first ever WNBA game at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls. Vandersloot was driving to the basket when she immediately went down and was in visible pain as she grabbed her right knee. Her teammates huddled around her, and she was eventually taken back to the locker room with the help of medical staff. She didn't return for the remainder of the contest. The Fever won the game 79-52. It's a brutal injury as the WNBA veteran was playing her first season back with the team that selected her No. 3 overall in the 2011 draft. Vandersloot spent the first 11 seasons with Chicago and was instrumental in the team capturing its first WNBA title in 2021. She signed with the New York Liberty in 2023 and spent two seasons with the team, helping the Liberty win their first championship last year. A five-time WNBA All-Star, Vandersloot is second in league history in assists with 2,887 career dimes, trailing Sue Bird's 3,234 assists. She also owns several franchise records in Chicago, including most games played, points, assists and steals, while ranking in the top five of several other categories. She re-signed with the team in February. "She's our engine," Sky coach Tyler Marsh said following the game against Indiana. "She's our captain and our leader out there, so obviously, it's a huge blow." Vandersloot averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team-high 5.3 assists per game in seven games played. Chicago is 2-5 on the season, standing in 11th place in the league as the team tries to get back to the postseason after missing it in 2024. "It's heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking to watch anybody, but especially one of our teammates and someone that means as much as Sloot does to this team and organization," Hailey Van Lith said postgame. "Whatever is in store in the future for this team, I trust we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end." Contributing: Nancy Armour

Red Sox Get Encouraging Update on $120 Million Free Agent Signing

Red Sox Get Encouraging Update on $120 Million Free Agent Signing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox may be getting the spark they desperately need, with star third baseman Alex Bregman making encouraging progress in his recovery from a right quad strain. Advertisement Bregman, who landed on the 10-day injured list on May 24, has begun a running progression and is currently traveling with the team for their series against the New York Yankees. Though the injury was initially described by manager Alex Cora as 'significant' and similar to the quad strain that sidelined Bregman for over two months in 2021, signs point to a faster recovery this time around. Tim Heitman-Imagn Images 'If it's up to him, he'd be playing tonight,' Cora joked ahead of Friday's series opener in the Bronx. 'He's locked in. He has his date on his mind. We just have to keep working. Obviously, we don't want to rush, and we have to be very diligent with it. But he's feeling great.' Cora admitted the rehab process has gone better than expected, though he declined to reveal a target return date for Bregman. The three-time All-Star was playing like a true centerpiece before the injury, slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs, 17 doubles, and 35 RBIs across 51 games. His .938 OPS led Boston at the time of his injury. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston this offseason and had been a stabilizing force both offensively and defensively at third base. Advertisement His absence has been felt, with the Red Sox going 3-7 in their last 10 games and falling to fourth place in the American League East. They now trail the division-leading Yankees by 9.5 games but sit just 4.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
