Leverkusen fans' nickname for Wirtz speaks volumes after £116m Liverpool move
Florian Wirtz completed his move to Liverpool last week from Bayer Leverkusen and supporters of the Bundesliga giants have given an insight into what Reds fans can expect
Florian Wirtz has made a blockbuster move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen, with the 22-year-old sealing the deal for an initial £100m rising to £116m and putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at Anfield.
Wirtz always had his heart set on a switch to Anfield, leading to Liverpool securing a transfer fee below Leverkusen's £126m asking price. The compromise was struck last week, much to the delight of the Reds.
Labelled as one of the most exciting talents in European football, Wirtz was hotly pursued by the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester City before opting for the Merseyside club.
SPORT BILD journalist Phillip Arens shared his enthusiasm with The Times, telling Liverpool fans: "Dear Liverpool fans, congratulations for having Florian Wirtz at Anfield. You'll love him and he'll take your hearts by storm.
"He is worth every single pound. Trust me. Wirtz and Liverpool will be a perfect match. I followed him as a reporter at Bayer Leverkusen from his first days when he was 16 years old in 2020.", reports the Liverpool Echo.
Arens also recounted: "When the speaker at the BayArena announced the Bayer squad, the fans screamed the word 'Fussballgott' after only one player - Wirtz. Calling a player 'god of football' is a typically German way of showing love and respect."
Upon finalising his transfer, Wirtz himself expressed his ambitions, stating that he didn't come to Anfield just 'to have fun', but believes it's the ideal place for him to develop and achieve success.
The player stated: "I just thought that it was the right point in my career to make the next step and, of course, I wanted to get to a club that is from the top three in the world, and Liverpool was one of them.
"The people say I'm a creative player and I hope I can bring this creativity to the team and also the joy on the pitch. I try to make assists, goals and run for the team and defend. I hope I can just make the team one step better."
He explained that his decision to join Liverpool was influenced by the club's people, vision, and offerings, saying: "I just saw myself in the best hands in Liverpool. I was really convinced by the people here, by the idea, and everything the club offers me was really good. It was not that easy for me, for sure, because I am a German player. I play for the Germany national team."
He continued, "So it was not easy for me to decide, but the talks with the coach [ Arne Slot ] and Richard [Hughes, sporting director] and everybody were, from the very first time, so good and it just kept going like this."

BENJAMIN NYGREN I think it's a great piece of business. He's a player who has clearly done a lot in his career so far, he's broken into the Sweden squad, recently scored goals for Sweden, he was really good in Denmark last year with 16 goals and can play as an attacking midfielder, number 10, number 8 or off a wing, even play up front as well. Reading Brendan Rodgers' quotes on him, he felt he was a quality player and I think that's what Celtic are getting in Benjamin Nygren, and for an absolute steal at the price. The big thing for me is he's a guy who I would look at and think he'll immediately come in and improve Celtic, this is no project, this is no squad player, this is a guy who will come in and play for Celtic and I think Celtic have pulled off a real transfer coup by getting him. He was very open in that he was ready to leave Denmark and move and he spoke about wanting to play under big pressure, wanting to compete for trophies, wanting to play in the Champions League, wanting to play in front of big crowds in a big stadium. Celtic, in that sense, tick every box. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up They still have this Champions League play-off to try and get through but I can imagine Celtic sells itself to an extent. For someone like him, who maybe wasn't going to get a top four, top five Bundesliga club, he's probably in that stage in his career where he wants to make a next step and just experience a bit more and gain better experience especially at European level. Brendan Rodgers is a manager who can develop players, who can help them progress and grow and I think it's a perfect fit for everybody. I wonder whether Celtic will play him as more of an attacking midfielder, maybe a Matt O'Reilly type replacement, that kind of idea. He can clearly score goals, I think what he's also got about him is a bit of personality, he was captain of Nordsjaelland last year, I think that will help. ROSS DOOHAN Ross Doohan comes in and what you're getting a guy who's just made his Scotland debut, he's knows the club, a really, really good addition to the goalkeeping area. You've got Kasper Schmeichel, Viljami Sinisalo and now Ross Doohan, I think that made perfect sense. NICOLAS KUHN We had the story about RB Leipzig, it then came out that Red Bull obviously want to take him back to Germany, in Italy it's emerged that Como, Cesc Fabregas' side are also very keen to bring him over to Serie A. Look he's a player who had a brilliant probably first six, seven months of the season last year, he did tail off, that's undeniable, however what a talented player. 5 Could Nicolas Kuhn leave Celtic for £15million this summer? Credit: Willie Vass When we talk about Celtic's transfer model, this is a signing for about £3million that they could potentially make five, six times their money on him if he was to go this summer. However it has to be on Celtic's terms. It would probably be an attractive proposition for him to go back to Leipzig where it all kind of started for him over in Germany and might feel that that's a better chance for him to work his way into the German national squad which is one of his career ambitions, especially ahead of the World Cup next year. But Celtic have got a long term deal, the terms have to be right if they are going to sell and it has to be right for everybody. Now if Nicolas Kuhn does want to go and makes it clear to Brendan Rodgers he wants to go, I don't think Brendan Rodgers will stand in his way, you saw that with Kyogo in January. If Como are now in for him, that's maybe a win-win for Celtic because you always want more interest in players in terms of the transfer phase, so we'll see how that one progresses over the next few weeks. My gut feeling is come the end of the transfer window Nicolas Kuhn won't be a Celtic player, but where he'll end up? I would probably say Leipzig are favourites right now, but we'll just see how it pans out. JOHNNY KENNY OUT, SHIN YAMADA IN? I suppose based on his form this season you would maybe scratch your head and think why would you be interested? But you need to look back to last season, his goal return last season which was outstanding in the J League, 19 goals. I think he is also one that, don't be fooled by his lack of experience at 25, it's the Japanese system you go through university, if you look at the profile of him, he is pretty quick, strong, stocky, seems very suited to European football, very suited to Scottish football and I think it's also quite interesting in that the fee wouldn't be huge. 5 Celtic got Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda and even Kyogo was a wee bit more at about £4million but all of them were still good value. I know Celtic have been scouting Japan and they are looking at Hayato Inamura as well from Nigata, a central defender, but I think he would certainly be one with a night in the future if that happens. In terms of Yamada, to me he is a guy who could suit Scottish football and I can understand why. But it's not just Celtic, there are European clubs looking at him because I think he is a player who seems ready for a move to Europe and I think he is a guy who for a relatively low fee could certainly do a job. With this in mind, I do wonder about Johnny Kenny. I know there has been interest and Celtic need to probably decide what they are going to do with him. Is it a loan, do you take any permanent offer that comes in for him? MICHEL-ANGE BALIKWISHA AND SONDRE ORJASAETER Balikwisha is certainly one that's been watched and I think he's only got a year left in his deal, he's had a lot of injury problems, he's a player that Celtic have liked for a while. I wonder whether the fee that Antwerp are looking for just now, whether it's Celtic or other interested parties, will start to go down towards the end of the window. I think they're asking for, according to colleagues in Belgium, 5 million euros and that's maybe a bit steep given his contract situation and his injury record. 5 Sondre Orjasaeter in action for Norway Under-21s Credit: AFP So I will keep watching that and with Orjasaeter, he's also been linked with PSV and he's clearly a player of potential, of quality, however I think you would maybe look at that one and have to ask what the interest actually is, and what else is going on, as Celtic have reportedly been looking at him in other windows but nothing has happened. I just wonder how that will pan out over the course of the next couple of months, especially if there's major interest from PSV at a certain level. CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS He's so important and I actually think what will help Cameron Carter-Vickers get into this season is he didn't have to go away with America, he was able to get a proper rest after the Scottish Cup final and I think with a strong pre-season, injury free, that will do him the world of good. I expect another strong season from Cameron Carter-Vickers, I don't expect him to be on the sale agenda, I think he'll be at Celtic for the foreseeable future. He's the number one central defender there, he's such an important player for Brendan Rodgers and the club. Benjamin Sesko's asking price changes again to put Arsenal on red alert
Arsenal are interested in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer but have been biding their time, with Viktor Gyokeres another option being considered Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko after RB Leipzig reportedly dropped their asking price. The Gunners are yet to sign a centre-forward in the summer transfer window but have made Sesko their top transfer target. Mikel Arteta knows they need a top-class striker to bolster their attack following a third straight second-placed finish in the Premier League. Sporting director Andrea Berta is the man tasked with signing one and has explored deals for Sesko and Sporting Lisbon goal machine Viktor Gyokeres. But things have gone quiet of late, much to the annoyance of some supporters, who are desperate for a striker to be signed. However, it now seems as though Arsenal 's patience could be rewarded, with Bild reporting that Leipzig are backing down from their previous stance. It was previously thought that the German side were demanding a fee of between €80million and €100m (£68m and £85m) for Sesko. That had put off the Premier League side, who reacted by exploring alternative options. But now it is being suggested that a fee of €70m (£59.7m) might be enough for the 22-year-old, who is under contract with Leipzig until June 2029 and scored 21 goals in 45 games across all competitions last season. Arsenal are long-term admirers of Sesko and believe he is a better bet than Gyokeres for a few reasons. The Slovenian international is five years younger than the 27-year-old former Coventry City striker and is playing in a more competitive division, with the Bundesliga rated higher than the Portuguese top flight. Sesko is open to moving to the Premier League this summer, but his agent is taking a different approach to Gyokeres, who has fallen out with Sporting's hierarchy. Asked about rumours that he had been lobbying Leipzig to lower their asking price, Elvis Basanovic said: 'This is far from truth. 'We respect RB Leipzig and I am 100 per cent convinced RB Leipzig will also respect our decision for the next step when we decide to do it. Even if there may be – or will be – a strong desire of the player to move to a certain club, we will never force or blackmail RB Leipzig. 'I believe this is not the right way, because the way you actually exit from the club shows your values. Values that you are bringing into a new club. I can understand in very big transfers, there are a lot of different interests but no matter what, I believe in football world should be more respect. 'So that's why we do things in the right way or we don't do them. It's very simple, even maybe in the media it looks very complicated.'

Dan Harper on why this could be his year at the ‘big one' after years of bad luck
The Hillsborough driver is making his fourth start at the twice-around-the-clock race with his regular German co-driver Max Hesse, and one-off team-mate, Austrian Philipp Eng. There is a real sense that this could finally be Harper's year as he has had to endure bitter disappointment on his three previous visits. Back in 2022, his silverware hunt was banished by a puncture, with the same fate befalling him last year, while in 2023, the car Harper was sharing had to be retired after it got caught up in an incident during the night. Only last Sunday, Harper and Hesse scored a first GTD Pro victory in the America IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at the Six Hours of Watkins Glen International in New York State. A day earlier, Rowe Racing triumphed at the Nürburgring 24 Hours to take BMW's total victory count around the famous 'Green Hell', in Germany, to 21 from all starts. Eng, meanwhile, has an enviable Spa record and is one of the most decorated drivers in the history of the Ardennes classic having won there three times, twice with Rowe Racing. 'I'm looking forward to the big one this weekend,' said Harper, who is being reunited with Rowe Racing for the first time since the World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup title decider in Saudi Arabia last December. 'We have had some bad luck at Spa these the last few years; on every occasion, we have been in contention for a podium, including 2024 we were fighting for the victory right up until the end only for a puncture before the last pit stop to deny us. 'We are competitive there which is encouraging, the BMW has been very strong there, and Rowe Racing are a fantastic and well-organised team who do very well in the longer endurance races, as they demonstrated at the Nürburgring last weekend with their win. 'Everyone in the team is naturally in good spirits, and myself and Max arrive at Spa on the back of our first win in IMSA, so yeah, I am really looking forward to it,' continued the 24-year-old. 'Having Philipp onboard is a boost, too. He has a great record a Spa with three victories, most recently in 2023, so I'm very excited to be sharing the car with him for the first time.' A 75-car field featuring machinery from 10 manufacturers such as Aston Martin, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG, Ferrari, Ford, Lamborghini and Porsche will line up for the 77th instalment of the 24 Hours of Spa, which begins on Saturday afternoon at 3.30pm UK time.
