Union Protests Penang Turf Club's Refusal To Negotiate Retrenchment

Barnama11 hours ago

GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- Members of the Club Employees Union of Peninsular Malaysia (CEUPM) held a peaceful protest today over the Penang Turf Club's (PTC) alleged failure to engage in negotiations with its retrenched workers since May 31.
The union's Secretary-General Rudy Rusly said the employer's action violated the spirit and principles of collective bargaining as enshrined in the Industrial Relations Act 1967.
This, he said, concerns the right of employees to be represented by a trade union in matters related to terms and conditions of employment and retrenchment.

Five held over RM26mil theft

Group has been syphoning money meant for Syrian aid for 10 years KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested five senior officials of an NGO on suspicion of having embezzled RM26mil in public donations. Sources said the suspects included its chairman, secretary, treasurer and financial officer. 'Money was transferred to their personal accounts and used to purchase jewellery, cars, land, houses and even cryptocurrency. 'They are also believed to have diverted organisational funds into personal accounts to provide loans to staff members and siphoned off surplus funds from a humanitarian well-building project in Syria for personal use,' a source told Bernama. The source said the misappropriation of public donations was believed to have been going on since 2015. The five were detained under Op Serantau conducted by the Selangor MACC across several locations in Selangor, Melaka and Penang from last Thursday. The suspects have been remanded for seven days, four of them until tomorrow and the other until Thursday. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and disclosed that assets worth over RM8mil had been seized or frozen. The seized items included jewellery valued at approximately RM100,000, over RM1mil in cash, cryptocurrency accounts worth about RM650,000 and four houses estimated at more than RM1.4mil. 'MACC has also frozen 14 bank accounts totalling nearly RM5mil for further investigation,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust. In another case, the MACC will conduct another statement recording session with an individual holding the title of Tan Sri regarding the alleged embezzlement of sukuk funds. The statement will be recorded on Thursday morning at the Tan Sri's residence in Sungai Besi. Previously, the MACC seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash, and a luxury residence. These assets, estimated at approximately RM32mil, are believed to belong to a highway concessionaire with the Tan Sri title.

Zahid: Halal industry contributed RM149bil to GDP

PUTRAJAYA: The first phase of the Halal Industry Master Plan (HIMP2030), covering the period from 2023 to 2025, has recorded encouraging achievements with an implementation rate of 89.7%, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ( pic ). Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Halal Industry Development Council (MPIH) chairman, said that during this period, the halal industry contributed RM149bil to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while halal exports reached RM61.8bil. 'This achievement is a clear indication that our halal industry development direction is on the right track and is gaining increasing confidence not only domestically, but also in international markets,' he said in a statement after chairing the MPIH Meeting No.1/2025 here yesterday. The meeting, attended by representatives from 15 federal ministries and state governments, served as a key platform to coordinate policies and strategic actions aimed at strengthening Malaysia's position as a global leader in the halal industry, reported Bernama. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia continues to strengthen the halal ecosystem through the expansion of halal parks, which now total 14 and span more than 80,000ha nationwide. As of the first quarter of 2025, these parks have recorded a cumulative investment of RM3.8bil. 'This proves that the competitiveness of our halal ecosystem continues to be a key attraction in the regional investment landscape,' he said. Following this, Ahmad Zahid urged all state governments to submit specific intervention plans to enhance their respective halal parks, especially those still facing low industry participation rates. In line with the government's aspiration to boost investment value and stimulate employment in the halal sector, he said MPIH has introduced a new framework for Halmas (Halal Malaysia)-certified Halal Industrial Parks, which is more dynamic and aligned with the National Investment Aspirations. Under this framework, Malaysia is targeting RM25bil in cumulative halal sector investment by 2030, supported by infrastructure development initiatives, improved governance and the strengthening of more competitive investment incentives. 'The government is also reviewing the formulation of a Bill of Guarantees, offering investor-friendly incentives, integrating Halmas services into the Malaysian Investment Development Authority's digital one-stop portal, and introducing the Halmas Mark of Excellence as a symbol of global quality and standards,' he said. Yesterday's meeting also saw the launch of the Women in Halal Industry initiative, a joint effort aimed at empowering women's roles in the national halal ecosystem and recognising their contributions across various stages of the industry value chain. Led by Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, in collaboration with Halal Development Corporation Bhd, the initiative is expected to provide greater opportunities for women to shine in the sector.

Urgent push to improve fertility rate

Inspiring change: Nancy (centre) officiating the Women's Inspiration Programme: Womenpreneurs – Shaping the Future Economy in Butterworth. — Bernama BUTTERWORTH: The government is ramping up efforts to increase Malaysia's total fertility rate (TFR), which has been declining over the past 15 years, by promoting inclusive solutions involving men, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. The Women, Family, and Community Development Minister said the country's TFR is at 1.7 this year – a slight improvement from 1.6 last year, but still below the replacement level of 2.1. 'This is still not enough, which is why we are expanding awareness through more programmes and roadshows. 'Sometimes, women are not the problem. Men could also be the cause of the low fertility,' she told reporters yesterday after officiating the Women's Inspiration Programme: Womenpreneurs – Shaping the Future Economy, organised by the Department of Women's Development in collaboration with the Penang Women's Development Corporation. She said the national roadshow began in Sabah and will soon continue across other states. 'There are several other programmes under the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) that address fertility issues, with solutions catering to both genders,' she said as reported by Bernama. On yesterday's event, Nancy said the programme provided an avenue for women entrepreneurs to learn, share strategies and build support networks. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing women's leadership across multiple sectors, noting that it is a key objective of the National Women's Policy and the Women's Development Action Plan 2025-2030, launched on International Women's Day in March. She said women make up 49% of Malaysia's population, but out of a total of 222 MPs, only 13.36% are women, which is still a huge gap. 'However, there has been encouraging progress as 38.9% of top positions in the public sector are now held by women. 'Women also account for 32.2% of board members in publicly- listed companies,' she added. At the ministerial level, Nancy said her ministry is nurturing female leaders through initiatives like the Women's Leadership Apprenticeship Programme launched last year, which has mentored over 1,200 women through guidance from 25 prominent figures across 10 major sectors. She said the programme will be expanded this year with RM5mil in funding, involving 100 mentors and 5,000 participants, underscoring the government's continued investment in developing women's leadership.
