Group has been syphoning money meant for Syrian aid for 10 years
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested five senior officials of an NGO on suspicion of having embezzled RM26mil in public donations.
Sources said the suspects included its chairman, secretary, treasurer and financial officer.
'Money was transferred to their personal accounts and used to purchase jewellery, cars, land, houses and even cryptocurrency.
'They are also believed to have diverted organisational funds into personal accounts to provide loans to staff members and siphoned off surplus funds from a humanitarian well-building project in Syria for personal use,' a source told Bernama.
The source said the misappropriation of public donations was believed to have been going on since 2015.
The five were detained under Op Serantau conducted by the Selangor MACC across several locations in Selangor, Melaka and Penang from last Thursday.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days, four of them until tomorrow and the other until Thursday.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and disclosed that assets worth over RM8mil had been seized or frozen.
The seized items included jewellery valued at approximately RM100,000, over RM1mil in cash, cryptocurrency accounts worth about RM650,000 and four houses estimated at more than RM1.4mil.
'MACC has also frozen 14 bank accounts totalling nearly RM5mil for further investigation,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.
In another case, the MACC will conduct another statement recording session with an individual holding the title of Tan Sri regarding the alleged embezzlement of sukuk funds.
The statement will be recorded on Thursday morning at the Tan Sri's residence in Sungai Besi.
Previously, the MACC seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash, and a luxury residence.
These assets, estimated at approximately RM32mil, are believed to belong to a highway concessionaire with the Tan Sri title.

Engineer loses over RM300,000 in phone scam

GEORGE TOWN: An engineer here has lost more than RM300,000 after falling victim to a phone scam. Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the 35-year-old woman, who works at a factory in Bayan Lepas, was contacted on March 25 by a man claiming to be a representative of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). "The suspect said the victim's phone number was involved in 33 police reports related to criminal activities," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 17) Comm Hamzah said the call was then transferred to the "Sarawak police contingent headquarters" and the victim then spoke to another suspect claiming to be a police officer. He said the "officer" told her she had been implicated in a money laundering case and would have to surrender all her money while an investigation was conducted. The suspect also assured the victim that the money would be returned after the investigation, threatening her with arrest if she failed to comply. Comm Hamzah said that out of fear, the victim made online transfers and cash deposits totalling RM336,760 to 14 bank accounts from March 25 to June 9. "The victim realised she had been deceived when the suspect continued to demand additional payments even though her savings were depleted," he said. The victim then lodged a report at Balik Pulau police headquarters. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

The remand order against the 57-year-old man was issued by Magistrate N. Sivashangari and is effective from today until June 23. Earlier, the suspect, dressed in an orange lock-up uniform, arrived at the Ayer Keroh Court Complex at around 9 am, escorted by several Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers. Yesterday, media reports stated that the suspect was arrested at around 1 pm while giving his statement at the MACC office in Melaka. According to sources, the suspect allegedly committed the offence between 2020 and 2023 by appointing his wife, a bank employee, as the investment agent for the RM50 million in share investments. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have used public and trust funds without the approval of the financial controlling officer. State MACC director Adi Supian Shafie, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

Court grants bail to woman charged in UiTM students' death

KUALA TERENGGANU: The High Court today granted RM40,000 bail with two sureties to a woman charged with murdering three Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun students in a road crash on Oct 9 last year. In delivering his decision, Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani found the defence's argument that the collision was an unintentional road accident and that the accused, Norizan Ismail, 50, had also skidded into a drain, to be reasonable. 'Just like a plane crash, you wouldn't assume the pilot flew the plane intending to kill people. Perhaps the same can be said of Norizan,' he said. The court also imposed the following bail conditions: the accused must report to the Dungun police station once every two months; she is prohibited from operating any vehicle, including cars, motorcycles, or bicycles; and her husband or bailor must ensure she has no access to any vehicle keys. Additional conditions include that the accused may only leave her home when accompanied by her husband, must continue receiving hospital treatment, and is prohibited from contacting or interfering with any witnesses until the trial concludes. If the accused breaches any of the conditions, the bail will be automatically revoked and the bail sum forfeited. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Mohd Khairuddin Idris proposed bail at RM30,000 with two sureties but urged the court to deny bail altogether, citing the potential risk of further offences. In response to a query from the judge, defence counsel Mohd Shahir Mat Jusoh informed the court that Norizan had a scheduled hospital appointment in Kuala Lumpur and was also undergoing alternative treatment. On Oct 15 last year, Norizan was charged with three counts of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code in connection with the deaths of UiTM Dungun students Muhammad Akmal Md Tukirim, 25; Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20; and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20. Subsequently, the court ordered Norizan to be sent to Hospital Permai for psychiatric evaluation, which found her fit to stand trial. Norizan is also facing a charge under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court for attempted murder involving another UiTM student who sustained injuries in the same crash.
