No. 15 overall seed UCLA eases past Fresno State 19-4 behind a season-high 22 hits

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Roman Martin had a season-high four hits, including a solo home run, and Mulivai Levu added three hits and five RBIs to help No. 15 overall seed UCLA rout Fresno State 19-4 in the Los Angeles Regional on Friday.
UCLA (43-16), back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, will play Saturday against the winner between Arizona State and UC Irvine. Fresno State (31-28) will meet the loser in an elimination game.
UCLA had a season-high 22 hits, topping its previous 19 against Purdue on March 30. Five different Bruins had at least three hits.
Martin started UCLA's four-run first inning with an RBI single and Blake Balsz capped it with run-scoring bloop single. Martin finished with four hits and three RBIs and Balsz added three hits and two RBIs.
UCLA starter Michael Barnett needed just eight pitches to set the Bulldogs down in order in the second. Barnett stranded a pair of runners in the fourth to get out of a jam. He allowed two earned runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Chris Grothues (2-1) came on with runners at the corners and one out in the fifth and got Bobby Blandford to hit into a 3-6-1 double play. Grothues threw just 10 pitches — eight strikes — over 1 2/3 no-hit innings.
Martin's eighth home run of the season made it 5-1 in the third. Balsz ripped an RBI single through the right side for a five-run lead.
The Bruins sealed it with six runs in the seventh for a 10-run lead. Levu cleared the bases with a shot off the wall in left field.
Payton Brennan hit his sixth home run of the season in a seven-run eighth.

AP PHOTOS: An AP photographer captures the moment an Israeli airstrike slammed into Gaza City

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Associated Press photographer captured the moment an Israeli airstrike slammed into a building in Gaza City, showing a rare glimpse of the devastation Israeli air power has had on the Palestinian territory during the 19-month war with Hamas. Jehad Alshrafi's photos show a fireball, a massive cloud of smoke and people running away after Sunday's strike. Israel had warned residents before hitting the building, and there were no reports of casualties. The target of the strike was not known. ___ This is a photo gallery curated by AP photo editors.

Inter Milan defender Bisseck to miss Germany games after getting injured in Champions League final

Associated Press MUNICH (AP) — Inter Milan defender Yann Aurel Bisseck will miss Germany's upcoming Nations League games after getting injured in the team's Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain. Bisseck only made a short appearance in Saturday's final, going on as a substitute in the 54th minute, then off again in the 62nd with an apparent right leg injury. The German soccer federation (DFB) said Sunday that Bisseck had muscular problems at the back of his right thigh, ruling him out of the Nations League semifinal against Portugal in Munich on Wednesday, as well as the final or third-place playoff against Spain or France four days later. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann called up Monaco defender Thilo Kehrer in Bisseck's place. Kehrer was to join the rest of the squad Monday at its training base in Herzogenaurach. The 28-year-old Kehrer has made 27 appearances for Germany, though none since June 2023. Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri left the camp Saturday and will miss the games with what the DFB said were 'adductor problems.' Nagelsmann had previously called up Mainz forward Jonathan Burkardt to replace the injured Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller. Stiller wasn't fully fit but was involved in three of Stuttgart's four goals as it defeated Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the German Cup final. ___ AP soccer:

French Open: Elina Svitolina saves match points and beats 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini

PARIS -- PARIS (AP) — Elina Svitolina saved three match points and came back to eliminate 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 on Sunday, earning her fifth French Open quarterfinal appearance. The 13th-seeded Svitolina, who is from Ukraine, is a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist — getting that far twice at Wimbledon and once at the U.S. Open — but is 0-4 so far in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros. She'll try to go a step further on Tuesday, when she will face either three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek or 2022 Wimbledon champion Elina Rybakina. They were scheduled to play each other next at Court Philippe-Chatrier. The No. 4-seeded Paolini entered Sunday on a career-best nine-match winning streak, including a run to the title on red clay at the Italian Open. A year ago, she reached her first major final at the French Open, losing to Swiatek, then also made it to the championship match at Wimbledon, where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova. Against Svitolina, Paolini served for the victory while leading by a set and a break at 5-3 in the second. But the Italian got broken at 15 there. She then held her first two match points while ahead 5-4, 15-40 as Svitolina served. Paolini missed a forehand on the initial chance to end things, and a backhand on the next. In the ensuing tiebreaker, Paolini once again was a single point from winning — and once again failed to come through, this time when Svitolina ended a 14-stroke exchange with a volley winner. From there, Svitolina was in control, racing to a 4-0 lead in the third set. She is quite comfortable on clay, where she has earned a tour-leading 16 of her 27 wins this season. Svitolina also defeated Paolini at the Australian Open in January. In the day's first men's match, Tommy Paul beat No. 25 Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to become the first American man in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros since Andre Agassi in 2003. The 28-year-old Paul, who is seeded 12th, was coming off consecutive five-setters but breezed to this victory. The fourth round is scheduled to conclude on Day 9, with No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and four American women in action: No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula and No. 7 Madison Keys vs. Hailey Baptiste.
