Texas governor orders arrest of Democrats absent at redistricting vote

The exodus by Democratic members of the Texas legislature was intended to deny Republicans the quorum necessary to vote on the redistricting plan, which President Donald Trump has championed.
By redrawing district lines in hopes of flipping some seats currently held by Democrats, the Republicans aim to protect the party's narrow US House of Representatives majority in next year's midterm elections.
At Monday's session the Republican speaker of the state House issued civil warrants for the Democrats - most of whom have gone to Illinois, New York or Massachusetts - to be brought back to Austin. But the orders apply only within the state, and breaking quorum is not a crime.

'To ensure compliance, I ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate, arrest, and return to the House chamber any member who has abandoned their duty to Texans,' Abbott said in a statement.

Singapore, US scrap plans for F-15 fighter jet training in Guam
Plans for a Singaporean fighter jet training presence in the US territory of Guam have been shelved, both governments have confirmed, despite years of preparation and investment in upgrading the US Air Force base on the Pacific island. Singapore and the United States had agreed to 'discontinue discussions' on deploying 12 Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) F-15 fighter jets to Guam, the city state's defence ministry announced on Tuesday. This followed an earlier statement from the US Air Force that it would not proceed with hosting the 12 F-15 aircraft at Andersen Air Force Base, even after completing an environmental review and – according to media in Guam – the commencement of major construction to expand the base by about 209 acres (85 hectares). Infrastructure upgrades at the base will continue, but the US will not 'implement or carry forward the beddown' of the 12 aircraft 'nor associated aircraft airfield operations to include temporary support aircraft, and RSAF personnel or their families', according to a record of the decision dated July 16 and signed by Michael E. Photo: AFP Responding to queries from This Week in Asia, Singapore's Defence Ministry said that both countries had 'mutually agreed to discontinue discussions on a RSAF fighter training detachment in Guam' following a review of the air force's training needs. The ministry added that the RSAF would continue to conduct periodic short-term training and exercises in Guam, including a coming fighter training detachment scheduled from October to November.

Trump shifts stance on Intel CEO Tan Lip-bu after White House talks
US President Donald Trump said members of his cabinet would continue discussions with Tan Lip-bu in the coming days after meeting with the Intel chief executive at the White House on Monday. 'The meeting was a very interesting one,' Trump said in a social media post. 'His success and rise is an amazing story. Mr Tan and my cabinet members are going to spend time together and bring suggestions to me during the next week.' Intel, in a statement, said Tan and Trump had discussed the company's 'commitment to strengthening US technology and manufacturing leadership', casting the talks as 'candid and constructive'. 'We appreciate the president's strong leadership to advance these critical priorities and look forward to working closely with him and his administration as we restore this great American company,' the statement added. The president's warm remarks were a stark reversal from just four days earlier, when Trump called for Tan's resignation and accused him of having conflicts of interest. Trump last week wrote in a post on Truth Social that Tan should step down as chief of the US chipmaker, describing him as 'highly CONFLICTED'.
