BBC adds 'stonking masterclass' of '90s drama with amazing cast and raunchy scenes to iPlayer
1997 BBC drama The Lakes starring John Simm was considered as a coming-of-age series for many 1990s TV viewers

If you watched TV in the late 1990s - and were over 15 - you'll have definitely tuned into Jimmy McGovern's The Lakes. The pedigree of McGovern's screenwriting, from the likes of Cracker to Hillsborough, still makes his shows a must-watch to this day and he continues turning out class act series like Time, Accused and Broken.
The Lakes saw new star of the moment, John Simm, as Danny Kavanagh, a Scouser with a gambling problem who runs away to the Lake District, gets a local girl pregnant - lets her down by gambling and ends up on the sharp end of the local community's anger after three girls die after sneaking out on a boat at the rental company he's got a job at. Despite wasting no time trying to save the schoolgirls, his reticence in revealing that he was on the phone to a bookie at the time they took the boat sees him become an easy scapegoat and the four-part drama follows the web of blame and bad behaviour that ultimately leads to the girls' death.

Now the show is back on the BBC thanks to iPlayer, almost 30 years after it first aired and with few repeat viewings it's a real treat for TV fans. It's a gripping and bleak affair but with stupendous performances from Simm and a supporting cast of familiar faces. Emma Cunniffe stars as Emma, Danny's wife, you'll recognise her from long-running shows like Silent Witness, Unforgotten and she was recently in Call the Midwife.

Welsh duo, Charles Dale and Robert Pugh play sex addict Chef and Father Matthew, respectively. Tenby-born Dale, who's nothing like on-screen bully Chef, is one of those faces you'll know from Corrie, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Unforgotten and he was Casualty's Big Mac for more than a decade. Pugh, also recently seen in Casualty, was Craster in Game of Thrones and has starred in Hollywood films like Master & Commander and Robin Hood.
John Simm shared the news on his Instagram and said the show was a 'masterclass in screenwriting' as he effused the show was a lifechanging experience - he went on to star in Human Traffic, Life on Mars and ITV's Grace, which is currently airing its fifth series. He writes: "It was special for Jimmy because it was autobiographical and it was special for me because it was the game changer in my career. I was 26 years old and having the time of my life in the Lake District playing the wonderful role of Danny Kavanagh with an amazing cast & crew, the best director (David Blair) and of course the greatest writer of them all. I'll be forever grateful for this opportunity."

Fans of John and the series itself didn't hold back in praise of the show. One wrote: "Not seen since first airing - when I think I watched it with my parents . What a stonking show." Another commented: "Amazing ! Can't wait to watch this again absolutely brilliant ! & Jimmy McGovern was my English teacher inspirational."
Simm's famous followers also revealed themselves to be fans of the show. Doctor Who boss, Russell T Davies said: "Oh amazing, what a brilliant show." Daniel Mays, famed for his roles in Line of Duty, A Thousand Blows and Mrs Biggs added: "Amazing show."

Emmerdale star confirms return for popular character and 'big' scenes ahead

Emmerdale's April Windsor actress Amelia Flanagan told The Mirror at the British Soap Awards all about a return to the ITV soap, which had been announced by bosses a while back One Emmerdale favourite's return to the show could be imminent, with Amelia Flanagan who plays April Windsor spilling all. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the actress, who won the award for Best Young Performer at this year's event, finally spoke out about the big news that a comeback was on the cards. The return had been announced by boss Laura Shaw months ago, but no details were given and no date was revealed either. ‌ April star Amelia has spoken for the first time about the looming return of Dylan Penders, played by actor Fred Kettle. The character debuted earlier this year as part of the teen's huge storyline that saw her living on the streets after running away from home. ‌ Dylan ended up following April to the village but after an overdose, he went to rehab and appeared to leave the show. The character proved a hit with fans though, and bosses decided to bring him back. It's now thought he will cause trouble for April and will feature in a big storyline in the village. He appeared to be filming already too which means he could be back onscreen within weeks. Speaking to us about the return for the first some, Amelia shared she was thrilled and was excited to explore Dylan and April further. She also teased there was some "big" stuff ahead, while revealing all on growing up on the soap after more than 11 years in the role. Amelia told us: "April has had an incredibly tough year with what she has been through, with the pregnancy and the homelessness storyline. April and Dylan didn't leave things on the best terms, but I think what is important now is that he's back. "Who knows what will happen. It will be great to explore that relationship further, I think fans want to see that which is great." Viewers have seen April having a tough time recently, struggling to adjust to life back in the village after the heartbreaking stillbirth if her daughter. ‌ Her and her dad Marlon Dingle have been at each other's throats for months, with Marlon struggling to get through to her and April trying to find her way. But there's positive scenes ahead, with "big" storylines teased too. Amelia told us: "I think hopefully the future is looking bright for all of them. They have been through so much with recent events. She's been dealt a hard hand in life in the last year or so, and we're gonna see more of April's journey. ‌ "She has been in the village for a long time now. She's been growing as a person and it's an incredible thing to explore with the show. I am excited for the bigger storylines to stick my teeth into." On her time on the show, she added: "I've been on the show for 11 and a half years now. It's been a long time. With April's journey, so much has happened, it's important to remember what has led her to be the way she is now, as far back as Donna's death. I think it's brilliant exploring new things." Amelia also praised her co-star Mike Parr, who plays Ross Barton, for his support towards her. She said: "Ross is like a big brother to April and it's very true to real life. I always say Mike is like a big brother. I love him to pieces, he's incredible and we have the best time together. Hopefully we see more of them onscreen." Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays. * Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.

Meghan Markle's 'business like' approach to royal rift with Harry exposed

Meghan and Harry have been estranged from the Royal Family for five years, with the Duke of Sussex recently expressing his desire to reconcile with his relatives Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to take contrasting stances on managing their distance from the Royal Family. Reports have suggested that the Duchess of Sussex adopts a rather "business" mindset towards the situation. The duke and duchess stepped back from royal duties five years ago back in 2021, and carved out a new path in the US with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Since then, they have been attempting to launch their careers in new directions. ‌ Despite having levelled numerous critiques at the Royal Family over time, recently, Prince Harry has signalled his desire for reconciliation. ‌ New insights, however, suggest that while Meghan is very supportive of Harry's legal battles and the "painful rift" with his family, she is perceived as having a more pragmatic "business"-like perspective, reportedly wishing Harry could be less affected "by the past and more present in the life they've built together". It is believed that the Sussexes feel excluded from intricate royal affairs taking place in the UK, reports the Express. "They [Harry and Meghan] are aware of everything going on in England, but they're being left out of the details - there's clearly no trust," a source speaking to People magazine remarked. Finding it challenging to be fully informed about his father, Prince Harry reportedly struggles to receive precise updates regarding King Charles. Last month, the duke expressed to the BBC his concern over the lack of communication with his father and his uncertainty about the time the King may have left. ‌ Moreover, he voiced a hope for mending ties with his relatives, saying: "Of course, they will never forgive me for lots of things, but there's no point in continuing to fight anymore." Prince Harry expressed his desire for reconciliation, stating: "I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious." ‌ However, Sally Bedell Smith, a royal biographer, suggested that trust remains a significant hurdle. In an interview with People magazine, she revealed: "The King and William don't trust Harry and Meghan with any kind of confidential conversation." Valentine Low, another author, noted that although Harry's BBC interview wasn't intended as a direct attack on the Royal Family, "it would be seen as one," making it even more challenging for Charles to extend an olive branch. Elsewhere, the Duke of Sussex was reportedly left furious after the King and British officials caused "repeated delays" in issuing his children's passports, leading to a name change. ‌ Prince Harry allegedly considered changing his family name to Spencer following "repeated delays by British officials" in issuing passports for his children, Archie and Lilibet. The Duke of Sussex had reportedly "discussed the issue" with his late mother's brother, Earl Spencer. He allegedly "actively explored ways" to make the switch while in the UK, but it is said that "the legal hurdles were insurmountable". The claims have been rejected as "completely untrue" by sources close to the Sussexes, sparking debate among commentators who believe such a move could worsen tensions within the Royal Family.
