J-K: Mirwaiz claims he is under house arrest

The Hurriyat leader was placed under house arrest on July 11, two days ahead of the July 13 commemoration function for martyrs of 1931. 'For second consecutive Friday I remain under house detention – with every lane and by-lane to my residence barricaded, causing inconvenience to the entire neighbourhood,' Mirwaiz said in a post on X. Srinagar, Jul 18 (PTI) Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq claimed to have been placed under house detention for the second consecutive Friday. 'Let me make it clear to the rulers, the memory of our martyrs cannot be regulated by them. It resides in our hearts. Facts and history cannot be erased by lockdowns and barring people from visiting the martyrs graveyards or stopping me from going to Jama Masjid on Fridays, not by appeasing narratives or shameful communal distortions, if it resides in the collective memory of people, which it does,' he said. 'The Marty's of July 13 1931 were the frontrunners of the political movement in Kashmir; a people's just struggle against oppression. They are and will remain our inspiration,' he added. July 13 is commemorated as 'Martyrs Day' in Jammu and Kashmir as a tribute to 22 people killed by the Dogra army outside Srinagar's central jail in 1931. The L-G administration had dropped the day from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020. PTI MIJ DV DV This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. RJD usurped land of poor before giving them jobs, alleges PM Modi at Bihar rally

Addressing a public rally in Motihari ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, the PM coined a new slogan, 'Banayenge naya Bihar, phir ek baar NDA sarkar' (We will build a new Bihar, once again an NDA government), igniting chants among the crowd and energising party workers. He also accused the Congress-RJD combine of playing politics in the name of the poor and socially marginalised people and blamed both parties for the state's earlier neglect and stagnation. Motihari (Bihar), Jul 18 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday alleged that the RJD could not think of providing employment to youths as the party usurped the land of poor people before giving them jobs. The prime minister asserted that he took the resolve of Operation Sindoor from the land of Bihar, and said that the world has witnessed its success. 'The RJD can't think of providing employment to youths, as it usurped the land of the poor people before giving them jobs,' the prime minister alleged. He also asserted that there was a huge gap in development during the RJD-Congress rule in the state. 'They never thought about the betterment of the poor. They only played politics in the name of the poor and the socially marginalised,' he alleged. Promising more opportunities for the youth, the PM said the Centre would invest Rs 1 lakh crore in providing jobs and employment across the country. Modi also asserted that 'Viksit Bihar' is important for the overall development of eastern India, and said the NDA is concerned about the overall development of the state. 'In the last 45 days, the government has released Rs 1,000 crore to 24,000 self-help groups in Bihar. Of the total 1.5 crore 'lakhpati didis' in the country, 20 lakh are from the state,' he said. The PM also said, 'Champaran gave a new direction to Mahatma Gandhi's movement during the country's freedom struggle. We have to develop Motihari like Mumbai.' Next cabinet meet to discuss panel report on Bengaluru stampede: K'taka CM

The commission headed by retired High Court judge John Michael Cunha submitted a two-volume report to Siddaramaiah on July 11, and it was placed before the cabinet during its meeting on Thursday. Not willing to share the findings of the report, he said the ministers have been given the gist of it to study before the next cabinet meet. Mysuru, Jul 18 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said that the probe report of the one-man commission constituted by the government to inquire into the June 4 stampede in Bengaluru that killed 11 people, will be discussed in the next cabinet meeting. 'It has not been discussed in the cabinet yet, the Cunha committee report was yesterday submitted to the cabinet. Gist of the report has been given to all Ministers. They will study and it will be discussed in the next cabinet meeting,' Siddaramaiah told reporters here. Asked about the findings of the report, he said, 'the media has reported certain things….I will speak about it after the next cabinet meeting.' The stampede occurred on June 4 outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and many were injured in the incident. Responding to a question on demand by several people, including retired Supreme Court Justice V Gopala Gowda for immediate constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the alleged mass murder, rape, and mass burials in Dharmasthala, over the past two decades, the CM said, the government will go ahead in the case in accordance with the law, based on police department's report. 'If SIT is necessary, it will be constituted. It will be based on the police department's report. The individual (eyewitness, a former sanitation worker who claimed that 'hundreds of bodies' had been buried in the area), was absconding for 10 years, he has now made a statement before the police and has said whatever he has to. He has said that he is the one who has buried the dead bodies and that he will show the spot where they are buried. Let's see what the police say in a couple of days,' he said. Asserting that there was no pressure on the government in this case, the CM said, 'even if the pressure is put, we will not heed to anything, we will do things in accordance with law.' Replying to a question on opposition BJP's criticism of his government's mega 'Sadhana Samavesha' convention in Mysuru, planned on Saturday, Siddaramaiah said, development works worth Rs 2,658 crore will be inaugurated and foundation stones will be laid during the event. 'Is it being done just like that'. He questioned what the BJP has done for Mysuru. Amid speculations that the event was Siddaramaiah's show of strength to strengthen his grip over CM seat, he clarified that it is no one's show of strength. It was aimed at showcasing the Congress government's work before the people, because BJP is spreading misinformation that the government was not doing anything and it doesn't have money because of implementation of guarantee schemes. To a question on urban voters not supporting Congress during elections, Siddarmaihah said, it cannot be said outrightly. It is with support of all voters the party has come to power. He cited the examples of Mysuru and Bengaluru. Downplaying a question on curiosity surrounding 'September revolution' as claimed by some Congress leaders, amid speculation about CM change, he said, 'ask those who said it. Even if those who have said are from my party, they have not told me about it. Ask them.' PTI KSU SA This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
