Ashghal announces design, construction of veterinary & agricultural research labs

Within the framework of the constant collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the commencement of the design and implementation project for Animal and Agricultural Research Laboratories, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality.
This initiative aims to advance the research infrastructure in the veterinary and agricultural sectors and enhance national capabilities in this vital field.
Three new labs
Engineer Ahmed Saleh, the project manager, confirmed that the new laboratories will provide a state-of-the-art working environment in line with the highest international standards for veterinary and agricultural research.
The project covers three main locations: the renovation of the veterinary laboratories building in the Old Airport area, the construction of a new agricultural research laboratory in Al Sheehaniya, and the setup of advanced laboratories at Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP).
Comprehensive upgrade of veterinary lab in Old Airport
Engineer Asmaa Al Musallmani, deputy head of Health Projects Section, noted that, in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality, work on the project has already begun and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026.
She added that the project heavily relies on local materials, with approximately 55 percent of the materials to be sourced domestically, including steel, iron, mechanical and electrical equipment, glass, aluminum, and woodworks.
She also emphasised the Buildings Projects Department's commitment to the highest standards of quality, health and safety, and modern technologies to help realise Qatar's vision of building an advanced research infrastructure.
Engineer Al Musallmani added that one of the targeted projects includes the redevelopment of the veterinary laboratory in the Old Airport area.
The project aims to enhance the facility's infrastructure and research capacity through comprehensive structural renovations, lab unit upgrades, and the construction of a fully equipped facility for veterinary autopsy operations.
New agricultural research facility in Al Sheehaniya
Engineer Omar Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud, project engineer, explained that a new agricultural research lab will be constructed in Al Sheehaniya over an area of 1,191 square metres to serve as an integrated centre for agricultural research.
The facility will include specialised laboratories such as sample reception and preparation rooms, physical and chemical processing labs, spectroscopy and soil extraction labs, along with supporting facilities including administrative offices, meeting rooms, and storage areas for chemicals and glassware.
Advanced labs at Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP)
Engineer Fahad Al Abdullah, the project engineer, highlighted that the project includes equipping three units (104, 105, and 106) at QSTP and transforming them into advanced research labs using the latest technologies.
He added that the laboratories will include a pesticide lab, a biotechnology and plant pathology lab, and a herbs and seeds lab, along with auxiliary spaces such as sample storage, researcher offices, meeting rooms, and support facilities. The work will be carried out in accordance with Qatar Foundation's guidelines to ensure the highest standards of quality and innovation.
Sustainable design reflecting Qatari identity
The veterinary lab in the Old Airport area, the Sheehaniya lab, and the QSTP facilities have been developed in accordance with the highest local and international standards, while preserving Qatar's cultural identity and heritage.
The project incorporates modern sustainability practices such as energy and water efficiency, the use of locally produced and eco-friendly materials, advanced fire safety measures, and low-emission, non-toxic construction elements.
This project reflects Qatar's ongoing commitment to advancing scientific research in the livestock and agricultural sectors and establishing leadership in veterinary and agricultural studies through state-of-the-art infrastructure that supports sustainable development and the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.

MoM raises awareness about harmful effects of plastic bags
QNA Doha The Ministry of Municipality, represented by Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality, organised an awareness event on the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day, which falls on July 3 of each year. The event was held in cooperation with Al Meera Consumer Goods Company and Al Rayan Bank as part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to reduce the use of plastic bags. In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Municipality explained that the event aimed to highlight the harmful effects of plastic bags on the environment and encourage community members to adopt environmentally friendly alternatives, in support of national efforts to achieve sustainability and preserve natural resources for future generations. The Ministry of Municipality, represented by the Health Control Departments in all municipalities, has been implementing Ministerial Resolution No. 143 of 2022 regarding the regulations governing the use of plastic bags since November 15, 2022. This resolution prohibits institutions, companies, and shopping centres from using single-use plastic bags and encourages the use of biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives. The ministerial resolution issued in mid-June complements the ministry's efforts to codify the legislative system related to solid waste management.

Municipality ministry, UDST sign MoU to enhance cooperation in food security
DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality, represented by the Agriculture Affairs Department and the Food Security Department, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) to cooperate in the fields of training, capacity building, and scientific research in support of Qatar's food security. The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Municipality HE Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah and the President of UDST Dr Salem bin Nasser Al Nuaimi. The MoU, signed by the Director of the Department of Agricultural Affairs at the Ministry Yousef Khaled Al Khulaifi and the Director of the Partnerships and Engagement Directorate at UDST Najla Al Naimi, aligns with Qatar's efforts to achieve the National Food Security Strategy 2030 and implement the Ministry of Municipality Strategy 2024 - 2030, particularly in enhancing food security and self-sufficiency. Al Khulaifi stated that the MoU marks an important step in strengthening the partnership between the Ministry and academic institutions in the state. He noted that the agreement aims to develop national competencies and support scientific and applied research in agriculture and food security, contributing to the achievement of the objectives of the National Food Security Strategy 2030, as well as Qatar's goals for sustainability and self-reliance. The Director of the Department of Agricultural Affairs affirmed the Ministry of Municipality's commitment to fulfilling the terms of the MoU in a way that meets national aspirations. For her part, Al Naimi said that the signing of the MoU represents a strategic alignment between the Ministry and the University, fostering fruitful cooperation based on the exchange of expertise and the integration of efforts to prepare for future challenges through knowledge, applied research, technology, and capacity-building. The MoU falls within a broader initiative to build national capabilities in agriculture and food security, encourage innovation and applied research, address future food security challenges, and enhance the skills of professionals working in this vital sector. UDST President Dr Salem bin Nasser Al Nuaimi stated that the signing of the MoU crowns years of ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality. He emphasized the University's commitment to instilling the concept of food security in its students through applied programs that encourage innovation and the use of scientific research to develop sustainable solutions. Dr Al Nuaimi expressed optimism about further fruitful collaboration, particularly through the University's Center of Excellence for Food Security and Sustainability, where advanced technologies will be leveraged to support food security. He highlighted the University's contributions to national food security through innovations such as smart irrigation systems, greenhouse farming, food waste composting, and soil enhancement adapted to Qatar's climate. The President of UDST noted that the University hosts the World Food Forum (WFF) Qatar National Chapter, affiliated with the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aimed at supporting the state's efforts toward food security and sustainability in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
