Arkansas hairstylist reveals ‘eerie' encounter with Devil's Den murder suspect Andrew James McGann moments before he's arrested mid-haircut: ‘He looked soulless'

The madman accused of brutally murdering two parents in front of their children in Arkansas' Devil's Den State Park 'looked soulless' during a haircut moments before he was arrested for the killings, his hairstylist revealed.
Andrew James McGann entered Lupita's Beauty Salon in Springdale, Arkansas, just before 5 p.m. on July 30, five days after the brutal murders of Cristen Amanda Brink and her husband, Clinton David Brink, in the state park.
Hairstylist Adriana Ruiz Avalos was put off by McGann's presence but still began the haircut, unaware of the high-profile arrest about to take place inside her shop.

'As soon as I saw him, as I was telling him to come into my chair, I had an eerie feeling about him,' Avalos told NewsNation's 'Banfield' Thursday night.
'He looked soulless,' she claimed. 'He didn't look right.'

The hairdresser says she had never seen McGann before the haircut session and found his hair and scalp in poor condition.
'Very dry and matted,' Avalos characterized McGann's head.
McGann's eyes were 'very sunken' as he sat in the chair during the haircut.
The 28-year-old murder suspect allegedly asked Avalos not to cut anything off the top to keep his eyes covered as he had evaded police for nearly a week, the outlet reported.

Law enforcement agents tracked McGann down to the salon, pinpointing him inside because his car, a black 2022 Kia Stinger, was parked outside.
McGann kept his head down and tried not to engage with the plain-clothed agents when a detective entered the shop, located 35 miles away from Devil's Den State Park.

'He really didn't say anything until they were like, 'I believe it's your car,'' Avalos said.
The hairstylist believes McGann wasn't aware of the situation until it was too late.
McGann was arrested mid-haircut and was handcuffed while still wearing a barber's cape, according to surveillance video from inside the salon.
The cape was removed from the suspected killer as he was escorted out of the shop.
McGann is accused of murdering the Brinks while the couple were on a walk in Devil's Den State Park with their two daughters.
The family of four was allegedly ambushed by a knife-wielding McGann on a remote wilderness trail on July 26.
Clinton Brink fended off the attacker as his wife rushed their daughters to safety.

The doting wife returned to help her husband, Arkansas prosecutors and police revealed Thursday.
The couple was found dead in the wilderness and their killer had fled the area.

The terrified girls, ages 7 and 9, gave officials a vivid description of the attacker, and a manhunt was launched.
McGann was charged with two counts of capital murder and is being held without bond at the Washington County jail.
He allegedly confessed to the crimes, but is expected to plead guilty.

Prosecutors said McGann — whose DNA matched blood left at the murder scene — could face the death penalty if convicted.
Avalos claims the entire incident took a toll on her and was left overwhelmed.
'I'm saddened because two little girls lost their parents. And it's … a soulless act by Andrew. It's unimaginable,' she said.

Britain hopes crackdown on people-smugglers' social media ads will help curb Channel crossings

Source – LegalPressLondon, Aug 3 (AP) Britain says people who advertise fake passports or people-smuggling services on social medial could face up to five years in prison, in the government's latest effort to deter migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats. The government said Sunday that anyone convicted of creating online materials intended to break UK immigration law will face prison time and a large fine. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the aim was to stop the 'brazen tactics on social media' used by smuggling gangs. 'Selling the false promise of a safe journey to the UK and a life in this country — whether on or offline — simply to make money, is nothing short of immoral,' she said. Assisting illegal immigration to the UK is already a crime, but officials believe a new offense — part of a border security bill currently going through Parliament — will give police and prosecutors more powers to disrupt gangs that send migrants on perilous journeys across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the crime gangs are a threat to global security and should be treated like terror networks. Since taking office a year ago, Starmer's centre-left Labour Party government has adopted powers to seize the assets of people-smugglers, beefed up UK border surveillance and increased law-enforcement cooperation with France and other countries to disrupt the journeys. Despite that, more than 25,000 people have reached Britain by boat so far this year, an increase of 50 per cent on the same period in 2024. Small boat crossings have become a potent political issue, fuelled by pictures of smugglers piling migrants into overcrowded, leaky inflatable boats on the French coast. Opposition parties say the government's plans aren't working — though the government argues the problems built up during 14 years when the Conservative Party was in power, The Conservatives say Starmer should not have scrapped the previous government's contentious and expensive plan to send migrants arriving by boat on a one-way trip to Rwanda. 'This is a panicked attempt to look tough after months of doing nothing,' Conservative immigration spokesman Chris Philp said. The government says it will take time to clear a backlog of applications that has left thousands of migrants stuck in temporary accommodation — often hotels — without the right to work. The hotels have become flashpoints for tension, attracting protests fuelled by a mix of local concern, misinformation and anti-immigrant agitation.(AP) TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Chilean rescuers recover the bodies of 4 miners who were trapped in a collapsed shaft

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — The bodies of four out of five miners trapped in a collapsed section of one of Chile's biggest copper mines for three days have been found and identified, an official said Sunday. Rescue workers at the El Teniente mine, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the capital Santiago, are still looking for the fifth miner, identified as Moises Pavez, mine director Andres Music said. The trapped miners were located thanks to GPS devices, but rescue workers had to drill through dozens of meters (feet) of rock to reach them. A section of the mine collapsed following a 4.2 magnitude quake on Thursday, killing one worker and injuring nine others. Authorities are investigating whether it was a naturally occurring earthquake or whether mining activity at El Teniente caused the tremor. Chilean prosecutors also launched a criminal investigation to determine whether any safety standards were violated. El Teniente, located in the Andes mountains in central Chile, is the world's largest underground copper mine and is owned by Chilean state company Codelco. Shortly after Thursday's collapse, Codelco halted operations at the affected section of the copper mine and evacuated 3,000 people from the wider site to safe areas. The company canceled a presentation of its first-half financial results, set for Friday morning, due to the rescue efforts. Chile, the world's largest copper producer, also lies in the seismically active 'Ring of Fire' that surrounds the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

Police: Residents evacuated after reports of bricks falling from Aurora building

Police said 11 apartments and two businesses in downtown Aurora were evacuated Saturday evening after reports of bricks falling from a building on East Galena Boulevard. The residents from 102 and 104 E. Galena Blvd. were evacuated as emergency responders worked to assess the structure, Aurora police said in an alert. All residents have found temporary housing according to the property managers on site, Aurora police said in a Facebook post Saturday evening. East Galena Boulevard was shut down between Broadway and Lasalle Street so an engineer could inspect the structure and repairs could be made, police said in the post.
