How a new planetarium show helped scientists unlock a cosmic secret

NEW YORK — Scientists have unlocked one of the solar system's many secrets from an unexpected source: a planetarium show opening to the public on Monday.
At the American Museum of Natural History last fall, experts were hard at work preparing 'Encounters in the Milky Way,' a deep dive into our home galaxy shaped by the movements of stars and other celestial objects.
They were fine-tuning a scene featuring what's known as the Oort Cloud, a region far beyond Pluto filled with icy relics from the solar system's formation. Comets can hurtle toward Earth from the cloud, but scientists have never glimpsed its true shape.
One evening while watching the Oort Cloud scene, scientists noticed something strange projected onto the planetarium's dome.
'Why is there a spiral there?' said the museum's Jackie Faherty.
The inner section of the Oort Cloud, made of billions of comets, resembled a bar with two waving arms, similar to the shape of our Milky Way galaxy.
Scientists had long thought the Oort Cloud was shaped like a sphere or flattened shell, warped by the push and pull of other planets and the Milky Way itself. The planetarium show hinted that a more complex shape could lie inside.
The museum contacted the researcher who provided the Oort Cloud data for the show, who was also surprised to see the spiral.
'It's kind of a freak accident that it actually happened,' said David Nesvorny with the Southwest Research Institute.
Realizing they'd stumbled on something new, the researchers published their findings earlier this year in The Astrophysical Journal.
The spiral is 'a striking shift in our understanding of the outer solar system,' planetary scientist Andre Izidoro with Rice University, who was not involved with the study, said in an email.
The discovery, relying on data on how celestial objects move and using simulations, will be difficult to confirm with observations. But knowing more about the orbits of distant comets could give scientists some clues, Izidoro said.
While putting together the planetarium show, the museum's experts weren't expecting a window into the universe's inner workings. The show, narrated by actor Pedro Pascal, features many vivid scenes that may capture audiences more than the Oort Cloud, said the museum's Jon Parker — including an ongoing merge of the Sagittarius mini galaxy with the Milky Way.
No matter how striking and beautiful the visuals of the show, the museum was committed to making it scientifically accurate. That's what created the perfect conditions to stumble upon something new, said the museum's Carter Emmart.
'You just never know what you're going to find,' Emmart said.

2 AI Growth Stocks That Could Help Set You Up for Life

The artificial intelligence (AI) market has grown like a weed over the past decade. That rapid expansion -- which was fueled by more sophisticated cloud computing services, large language models, and generative AI applications -- lit a blazing fire under some high-growth tech stocks. The most obvious winners are Nvidia, the world's top producer of discrete graphics processing units (GPUs) for processing AI tasks; and Microsoft, which acquired a big stake in OpenAI and integrated the start-up's AI tools into its own services. But there are still plenty of other under-the-radar AI growth plays that might have more upside potential. Let's look at two of them: Credo Technology (NASDAQ: CRDO) and Arm Holdings (NASDAQ: ARM). Credo Technology Credo, which went public in 2022, sells a wide range of high-speed connectivity solutions for the data center, cloud, and AI markets. Its core products include data transfer chips, digital signal processors, line card components, and active electric cables for data centers. From fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2025 (which ended this May), Credo's revenue grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 60%. It also turned profitable for the first time in fiscal 2025. Credo attributed that growth to the rapid expansion of the cloud and AI markets, which drove its hyperscale customers to aggressively upgrade their data center infrastructure. Its biggest customer -- widely believed to be Microsoft -- accounted for 39% of its revenue in fiscal 2024. That customer concentration isn't ideal, but it also isn't surprising considering how much Microsoft is prioritizing the expansion of its cloud and AI ecosystems. Its other major customers include Amazon and Tesla. From fiscal 2025 to fiscal 2027, analysts expect Credo's revenue to rise at a CAGR of 47% as its earnings per share (EPS) increase at a CAGR of 113%. That rapid growth could be driven by the continued expansion of the AI market, and a shift toward higher-speed ethernet connections that will spur demand for its new optical modules. There's also rising demand for its "chiplet" designs, which are more modular, customizable, and scalable than monolithic system on chips (SoCs), which merge together multiple chips on a single die. It isn't cheap at 64 times this year's earnings, but it could have plenty of room to run over the next few decades. Arm Holdings Arm is a U.K. chip designer which was acquired by Japan's SoftBank in 2016 and spun off again in a second IPO in 2023. It develops power-efficient CPUs that consume less power than the x86 CPUs produced by Intel and AMD. That makes Arm's chips well-suited for smartphones, tablets, Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets, connected vehicles, and even some notebook computers and servers. Its chip designs are now installed in approximately 99% of the world's smartphones, and most of its growth over the past few years has been fueled by its AI-optimized Armv9 designs. Arm's revenue rose 24% in fiscal 2025 (which ended this March), and analysts expect that figure to grow at a CAGR of 21% over the next three years. Its EPS, which surged 159% in fiscal 2025, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 41% through fiscal 2028. Arm originally only generated its revenue by licensing its designs to chipmakers like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple instead of producing its own chips. But earlier this year, it announced that it would start developing its own first-party chips and outsource its production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. That surprising move would boost Arm's operating expenses and turn it into a direct competitor for some of its top clients. But it could also undercut other Arm-based chips because it doesn't need to pay any royalties or licensing fees for its own designs. Its first-party brand recognition could also make it a more appealing option than third-party Arm-based chips for OEMs. Arm's stock certainly isn't cheap at 113 times this year's earnings, but it could be a great long-term play on the market's growing demand for more power-efficient AI chips. ‘It's Not a Straight Line,' Says Top Investor About Super Micro Computer Stock

Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) offers investors an interesting test-case when it comes to risk and rewards. Confident Investing Starts Here: The provider of AI server and storage solutions operates in the exceptionally lucrative AI field, and yet previous corporate governance issues placed the company on the cusp of being delisted from the Nasdaq stock exchange. While the danger of delisting is now in the rearview mirror, a recent earnings report did not exactly delight investors. Indeed, its Q3 2025 revenues were down 19% from the previous quarter, while gross margins also fell from 11.8% to 9.6% sequentially. So, which way are things headed? Top investor Michael Wiggins De Oliveira is ready to look beyond the previous issues and focus on the future. 'Despite the noise—missed targets, some governance baggage, and a bit of execution risk—Supermicro's financial setup looks strong,' asserts the 5-star investor, who is among the top 4% of TipRanks' stock pros. Wiggins De Oliveira explains that Super Micro Computer is a major player in the AI bonanza, and their mix-and-match 'building block' designs help customers build 'exactly' what they are looking for. Moreover, their second-gen cooling system allows data centers to run more efficiently by cutting decreasing energy and water usage. 'When it comes to AI, Supermicro is right in the thick of it. They're often the first to ship systems using the latest Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices chips—the key engines behind today's AI boom,' adds Wiggins De Oliveira. Even if the company fails to hit its revenue estimate of $40 billion for fiscal 2026, Wiggins De Oliveira thinks there is plenty of buffer for investors. For instance, $25 billion in revenues in fiscal 2026 – quite a large haircut from current guidance – would still equate to 15% year-over-year growth, which 'keeps Supermicro on a healthy growth path.' 'For a business this profitable, sitting at the center of a major tech trend, trading at just 22x forward free cash flow—this looks like a steal to me,' adds Wiggins De Oliveira. While progress might not be a straight line ('it never truly is'), the investor concludes, SMCI is moving in the right direction. Wiggins De Oliveira is therefore rating SMCI a Strong Buy. (To watch Wiggins De Oliveira's track record, click here) Though not quite as bullish, Wall Street is also on board. With 6 Buys, 5 Holds, and 1 Sell, SMCI enjoys a Moderate Buy consensus rating. Its 12-month average price target of $40.83 has a downside of ~5%.
