EPS says Communists are DMK's slaves, MK Stalin says alliance based on ideology

India Today3 days ago
The DMK and AIADMK traded barbs after Opposition Leader Edapadi K Palanisamy (EPS) accused the Communist Party of being a 'slave' to the DMK, prompting a sharp response from Chief Minister MK Stalin.EPS, speaking at an event, alleged that the Communist Party had stopped protesting on people's issues.'People are facing so many issues. Is the Communist Party protesting about them? Did you protest for the pending pension for Transport Department staff? For farmers' issues? For government staff raising their voice over the Old Pension Scheme? Today, the Communist Party is the only party not protesting for anything, as it has become a slave to the DMK,' he said.advertisement
The AIADMK leader also claimed that the DMK's allies, including the Communists, had become silent on governance failures. He further suggested that these parties were being directly or indirectly wooed for future political alliances.Responding to the remarks, Stalin said that some were 'irritated' by his party's friendship with the Communists. 'Our friendship is not based on electoral loss or gains but on ideology and aim. This is what has been irritating many. Especially Opposition Leader Edapadi K Palanisamy seems to have a newfound love for the Communist Party,' Stalin remarked.Hitting back at EPS's 'slave' jibe, Stalin said, 'Can Palanisamy speak about slavery? I only wish to tell him that no one is a slave of anyone here. Communists make half of us, and my name itself is Stalin.'- EndsMust Watch

Will provide concrete houses to poor if elected, says EPS

RANIPET, TIRUVANNAMALAI: As part of his 'Makkalai Kaappom, Tamilagathai Meetpom' election campaign, Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami visited Kaniyambadi in the Arcot constituency, and later Arani, Cheyyar and Tiruvannamalai. During the meetings he addressed, he promised saris for women every Diwali and concrete houses for the poor if AIADMK comes to power in the 2026 elections. Speaking at Kaniyambadi, EPS promised that after they come to power, it will facilitate the supply of the soil required for brick kilns in the region. Currently, around 7,000 people work in approximately 400 brick kilns here, but the business has been affected due to the unavailability of sandy soil. He further said that a dam would be constructed across the Naganadhi in Amirthi, which would help fill 25 lakes. To address the issue of untreated sewage from the Vellore Government Hospital being discharged into Sabidallipuram lake, he assured that the sewage would be treated before being released if they come to power. He also pledged to improve facilities in the Amirthi forests to boost tourism. In Arani, Tiruvannamalai, EPS promised that the Sooryakulam lake would be desilted, its banks strengthened, and footpaths laid around it. Accusing the DMK government of increasing taxes, he alleged that the power tariff had risen by 67 percent, while taxes for shops and houses had gone up by approximately 150 percent and 100 percent respectively.

La Ganesan, who grew up with RSS, helped shape Tamil Nadu's political landscape, and was Governor in 3 states, no more

La Ganesan, a veteran organiser for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and one of BJP's longest-serving leaders in Tamil Nadu, who went on to serve as Governor in three states, died on Friday in Chennai. He was 80. The Governor of Nagaland since February 2023, Ganesan was admitted to Apollo Hospitals on August 8 after a brief illness. His condition worsened over the following week, hospital officials said. Born on February 16, 1945, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, into a Brahmin family, Ila Ganesan — as he was known to colleagues — was drawn to the RSS as a boy, becoming a full-time pracharak in his youth. His early decades in the organisation were largely outside the public spotlight. That changed in the early 1990s, when the RSS deputed him to the BJP as general secretary in charge of the party's organisation in Tamil Nadu, a post he held until 2003. His tenure spanned a period of tumult and unlikely alliances for the BJP in the state. Alongside the political commentator Cho Ramaswamy, Ganesan was credited with engineering the BJP's tie-up with the DMK in the late 1990s, after the AIADMK, led by J Jayalalithaa, pulled out of the NDA government. Ganesan's political style stood apart from the newer generation of BJP leaders. He cultivated cordial relationships across the political spectrum — with DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Jayalalithaa, and even Communist leaders — and avoided the strident personal attacks that often colour Tamil Nadu's political discourse. Never known to flaunt his caste identity, he instead built a reputation as a soft-spoken organiser and skilled orator who could address audiences in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi. Party colleagues recall him as a 'simple man' who often travelled with only a small bag, and as one of the few BJP leaders to work consistently to connect with the Tamil diaspora in Sri Lanka, Europe, and across Asia. Beyond politics, Ganesan was steeped in literature and music. He wrote columns for mainstream publications, edited Ore Naadu (One Nation), the Tamil Nadu BJP's mouthpiece, and founded Pottramarai (Golden Lotus), a collective of Tamil scholars from around the world. Among RSS colleagues, he was known as a singer and composer, having written and set to music several songs on patriotism and national integration. He rose through the BJP's ranks to become state president of the Tamil Nadu unit, national secretary, and vice-president. In the Rajya Sabha, he represented Madhya Pradesh. In August 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed him governor of Manipur; he later held additional charge as governor of West Bengal before moving to Nagaland in 2023. A lifelong bachelor, Ganesan remained active in public life until his final weeks.

Time for states to reclaim federal rights legally: CM

Chennai: The time has come for states to reclaim federal rights constitutionally, said chief minister M K Stalin , accusing the Union govt of snatching the powers of states in key sectors, including education and health. Delivering his Independence Day address after hoisting the tricolour at Fort St George on Friday, Stalin said that at a time when states working closely with people need more funds and autonomy, the Union govt was doing the opposite by snatching away powers. "State govts are forced to depend on the Union govt due to the discrimination in devolution of funds, policies, and court judgments," he said. Such constant struggles of getting basic rights and funds through arguments and legal battles do not bode well for a federal country, Stalin added: "This will also hinder the state's growth and national progress. Only when states grow independently and distinctively will the country truly develop, he said.
