Ineos CEO: People Don't Want To Be Force-Fed EVs

Motor 115-05-2025
The European Union might have
relaxed its rules
regarding the sale of new gasoline/diesel cars, but it'll still be hard for automakers to keep combustion alive. That frustrates
Ineos Automotive
CEO Lynn Calder, who says the industry should listen to customer demand and not top-down policies pushing full electrification. Ineos wants to give customers a choice—not just electric vehicles.
She told
Top Gear
that hybrids are popular, and yet 'policy is defining what people should buy, and people don't want it,' even though she believes electrification 'will always have its place.' These policies are significantly harder on smaller auto operations like Ineos. But the company is embracing the new technology.
Ineos Fusilier
Over a year ago, Ineos revealed the
Fusilier
, an electric vehicle with a range-extender option. The project is currently paused, according to Calder. If it hits the market in 2027 or 2028, Ineos might be unable to sell it long enough to make a business case for producing it.
Calder also believes the EU will extend the ability to continue selling non-zero-emissions vehicles beyond the deadline. The EU relaxed the wording regarding its ban on combustion-powered vehicles, saying instead that it wants zero-emissions vehicles, which leaves the door open for carbon-neutral fuels like hydrogen or synthetic fuels. She said that pushing for lowering emissions should be the goal, not a push for zero-emissions vehicles.
Ineos Automotive was formed in 2017 to design and build a utilitarian off-road vehicle that would become the Grenadier. It also sells the Quartermaster pickup truck. The company sources its 3.0-liter inline-six gas and diesel engines from
BMW
.

Trump says he will put 100 percent tariff on semiconductors

'If you have made a commitment to build or are in the process of building, as many are, there is no tariff. If for some reason you say you are building and you don't build, we go back and add it up, it accumulates, and we will charge you at a later date. You have to pay,' Trump said. The U.S. imported more than $60 billion worth of semiconductors in 2024, including more than $50 billion from Asia. Leading suppliers include Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the European Union, Thailand, South Korea and Japan. China exported about $2 billion worth of chips to the U.S. last year. It is a significant source of chips used in automotive manufacturing. The EU, as part of its recent trade deal with Trump, secured a commitment that it would only face a 15 percent tariff on semiconductors. South Korea and Japan appear to have won a similar commitment as well. Trump's announcement stems from an investigation that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick launched on April 1 under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act. That legislation empowers the president to restrict imports deemed a risk to national security. The Semiconductor Industry Association, the main U.S. industry group, has warned that 'untargeted tariffs' could backfire on the U.S. 'by raising the cost of developing technology and manufacturing chips at home.' Hyundai, GM Plan to Jointly Develop Five Vehicles, Including Electric Van

Hyundai Motor Co. and General Motors Co. plan to jointly develop five vehicles that will hit the market in 2028, including an electric van for North America, as the two automakers deepen strategic ties amid intensifying competition from China. The pair will develop four vehicles for the central and South American market, including a compact SUV, sedan and two pick-ups, all with the flexibility to use either an internal combustion engine or a hybrid system, they said in a statement Thursday.

Why Novo Nordisk Stock Slipped Today

Key Points It was a double miss for the Wegovy maker in its second quarter. It's been hammered not only by competing licensed drugs, but it also has to contend with copycats. 10 stocks we like better than Novo Nordisk › Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) stock imitated the company's leading product on Wednesday by slimming down in price. The Danish pharmaceutical's shares lost nearly 4% of their value following its latest earnings release, comparing unfavorably to the modest (0.7%) gain of the S&P 500 index. Still growing, but... Novo Nordisk, famous for its Wegovy obesity drug (and its sibling, diabetes treatment Ozempic), unveiled its first half and second quarter of 2025 figures early Wednesday morning. For the quarter, the company booked 76.9 billion Danish kroner ($11.9 billion) in revenue, which was up only marginally on a sequential basis, and 13% higher compared to the same period of 2024. Net income, meanwhile, was down from the previous quarter but up from the year-ago quarter. It rose by 32% year over year to 26.5 billion kroner ($4.1 billion), or 5.96 kroner ($0.92) per share. Both headline numbers missed the consensus analyst estimates, although not by much. Pundits tracking the company were modeling the equivalent of just under $12 billion for revenue, and $0.95 per share on the bottom line. Although Novo Nordisk continues to post double-digit increases thanks largely to Wegovy and Ozempic, it has been in the investor doghouse so far this month. That's because at the end of July, it significantly cut its guidance for both total sales and operating profit. Withering competition Much of this has to do with the intense competition Novo Nordisk is facing due to the runaway success of those medications. These days, pharmacy sector powerhouse Eli Lilly is doing brisk business with a directly competing product, Zepbound, while third parties are copying Wegovy's semaglutide molecule for their own compounded products. The company announced no fewer than 14 new lawsuits on Tuesday, making a total of 146 across 40 U.S. states, to combat the latter. Should you invest $1,000 in Novo Nordisk right now?
