Police: Terengganu ECRL sites hit by 22 thefts this year, nearly RM300,000 lost
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 25 — Terengganu police recorded 22 theft-related reports, including cable thefts, at East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project sites across the state from January 1 to May 31 this year, with estimated losses totalling RM300,000.
State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said 13 investigation papers were opened — five cases in Besut, four in Marang, two in Setiu, and one each in Kemaman and Dungun.
'Of these, five cases have been charged in court under Sections 414 and 379/511 of the Penal Code. Another five were classified as no further action (NFA) due to lack of evidence, while three are still under investigation,' he told Bernama here today.
He noted the number of cases had declined compared to the same period last year, when 35 reports were lodged, involving nearly RM2 million in losses.
At that time, 23 investigation papers were opened — eight cases in Marang, five each in Kuala Terengganu and Besut, three in Setiu, and two in Dungun.
'Of those cases, eight were brought to court under the same sections, five were given NFA status, and 10 remain under investigation,' he added.
Mohd Khairi advised project site operators to strengthen security to prevent further theft, especially involving cables.
He recommended installing perimeter fencing, CCTV cameras, and adequate lighting, especially at night, in addition to deploying sufficient security personnel and maintaining a well-organised inventory system for construction materials and equipment.
He also urged nearby communities to report any suspicious activity or unauthorised movements around project sites to authorities or site management.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke had previously said the police must take firm action against cable thefts at ECRL sites, as such incidents could disrupt the project's progress.
Earlier, Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) had expressed concern over cable thefts detected at certain locations along the ECRL alignment, which spans Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor. — Bernama

Acting president: Muda no longer weighed down by Syed Saddiq's conviction, to decide next steps after acquittal
PUTRAJAYA, June 25 — The acting president of the United Democratic Alliance (Muda), Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz, today said the party would meet later today to discuss its future. Following the acquittal of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman on graft and corruption charges, she said they no longer needed to find a way to move forward under the weight of his conviction, and that no time had been wasted. "Syed Saddiq proved his innocence today and we're grateful. We always believed in him and that justice would prevail. We at Muda and the central committee will be meeting later today to discuss the party's future, and anything that comes up, we will inform you promptly," she told reporters when met at the Court of Appeal. Syed Saddiq remains a key figure in Muda, despite stepping down as president in 2023 following his initial conviction. On November 9, 2023, the High Court sentenced the former youth and sports minister to seven years' imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine for the misappropriation of funds belonging to Armada. The sentence covered four charges: one for abetting criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million from Armada's funds, one for misappropriating RM120,000 from the Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise account, and two for money laundering — each involving RM50,000 transferred into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account. Today, he was acquitted by the Court of Appeal of all charges, after a three‑judge panel found that the trial judge had erred in evaluating the defence's evidence.

MACC Completes Ismail Sabri Probe, Plans RM170 Mln Forfeiture
PUTRAJAYA, June 25 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that the investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been completed, and a forfeiture application for cash amounting to RM170 million is expected to be filed within the next two weeks. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the investigation papers have been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, and the Deputy Public Prosecutor has agreed to proceed with the application for forfeiture of the cash. 'The affidavit application and related documents are being prepared. It is up to Ismail Sabri to challenge our application,' he said at a press conference at the MACC headquarters here today. However, Azam clarified that no decision has been made yet regarding criminal charges against the country's ninth prime minister. Ismail Sabri had previously appeared at the MACC headquarters several times to assist in investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering involving the use and procurement of funds for promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his administration from August 2021 to November 2022. Azam said the MACC had also recorded a statement from Ismail Sabri's former son-in-law, Datuk Jovian Mandagie, in relation to the investigation into the former prime minister's asset ownership. The investigation followed a directive for Ismail Sabri to declare his assets under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009. The declaration was made on Feb 10, and the MACC is now analysing the sources of the declared assets. Following that, the MACC seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies — including Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc and Yuan — and confiscated 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million, as part of the corruption and money laundering probe against the former prime minister. The seizures were made during raids at a residence and office believed to have been used as a 'safehouse', based on investigations into four of Ismail Sabri's former senior officers who were detained in February.
