Edson Alvarez helps Mexico survive Dominican Republic thriller, win Gold Cup opener

INGLEWOOD, California — Edson Alvarez did it all for Mexico on Saturday night, scoring, playing in midfield and defense, and ultimately pushing El Tri to a 3-2 victory over the Dominican Republic.
Mexico will be happy to take all three points to open its Concacaf Gold Cup title defense, with the Dominican Republic providing a spirited challenge in its first-ever Gold Cup match.

It was an atmosphere that felt restrained from the typical Mexico match in the Southwestern U.S., with protests against immigration raids continuing a dozen miles from the stadium in downtown Los Angeles. Some Mexico fans posted on social media that they'd avoid attending the match, with Mexico manager Javier Aguirre declining to opine on any political matters.
Still, there were plenty of the vibrant moments that characterize El Tri games as well, with a wave going around the announced crowd of 54,309 within the first 10 minutes.
Those fans had something to cheer just before the halftime break when West Ham man Alvarez leapt at the near post to nod in a corner kick from Orbeline Pineda and give Mexico the lead.
The second half started briskly, as both teams had scoring chances within the first two minutes. Mexico forward Raul Jimenez finished his chance, off a pass from forward partner Santi Gimenez, to extend his team's lead to two.
The Dominican Republic had a moment of its own to celebrate in the 51st minute, though its first-ever Gold Cup goal came in strange circumstances. As Peter Gonzalez took possession from a throw-in, a fan in the stands tossed the ball that had gone out of play back on the field. Gonzalez beat a Mexican defender to get into the box and finished with his left foot for the Caribbean country's debut tally. Mexico players circled the referee asking for him to annul the goal because of the second ball, but he ruled it hadn't affected the play.
Alvarez again appeared for Mexico shortly after. Having slid back into central defense after starting the game in a deep midfield role, Alvarez once again was able to win a header off a corner kick. This time, his effort took a deflection off fellow center back Cesar Montes. After the goal was credited to Alvarez, Montes' name ended up going on Concacaf's official scoresheet.

Whether than quibbling about who got the credit, the Mexico veterans will simply be relieved that the goal counted, since it turned out to be necessary. Despite being closed down by a trio of Mexico defenders in the box in the 67th minute after midfielder Heinz Mörschel found him at the edge of the area, Dominican substitute Edison Azcona was able to get to his right foot and put a quick shot past Mexico goalkeeper Luis Angel Malagon to once again pull the underdogs to within one goal.
Aguirre hoped to extend the slim advantage, refreshing his attack with winger Julian Quiñones coming on in the 73rd minute and fellow wide attacker Cesar Huerta entering in the 83rd. But neither team enjoyed any clear-cut opportunities, with Alvarez's big day marking the difference.
Both teams now turn their attention to their second group matches Wednesday in North Texas, with the DR meeting Costa Rica and Mexico facing Suriname in the second game of a doubleheader at AT&T Stadium.

Women's soccer team dubs itself 'Immigrant City Football Club' amid anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles

National Women's Soccer League club Angel City FC dubbed adorned T-shirts on Saturday night with the words "Immigrant City Football Club" emblazoned across the chest as anti-ICE riots plagued parts of Los Angeles County over the last week. The back of the T-shirts read the words, "Los Angeles is for everyone," and "Los Ángeles es Para Todos," according to the Los Angeles Times. The shirts were also given to fans who attended the match against the North Carolina Courage at BMO Stadium. Angel City FC lost 2-1. Becky G, a singer/songwriter who is also an investor into the club, read a statement as players walked onto the pitch for the match. "At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that Los Angeles is stronger because of its diversity and the people and the families who shape it, love it and call it home," she said, via the Los Angeles Times. "The fabric of this city is made of immigrants. Football does not exist without immigrants. This club does not exist without immigrants. "This is our home. This is LA. This Immigrant City." Protests in Los Angeles over ICE raids in the city turned into riots as autonomous vehicles burned, stores were looted and law enforcement officers were assaulted. The riots continued throughout the week into Saturday's so-called "No Kings" protests. Angel City FC was among the first to put out a statement amid the riots. "We are heartbroken by the fear and uncertainty many in our Los Angeles community are feeling right now," it said. "At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that our city is stronger because of its diversity and the people and families who shape it, love it and call it home." The 2026 FIFA World Cup is less than a year away, and you could argue that the U.S. Men's National Team is in a crisis. When the USMNT named Mauricio Pochettino as head coach last September, it was supposed to be a foundational moment for the program. The Yanks brought in one of the world's most respected managers to lead them into a golden age that coincided with the United States co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico. But best laid plans of mice and men often go awry, and things have taken a turn for the worse for Pochettino's side. The USMNT has lost its last four matches to Panama, Canada, Turkey and Switzerland by a combined score of 9-2, which has put heaps of pressure on the Stars and Stripes ahead of this summer's Gold Cup, which gets underway Sunday evening at PayPal Park in San Jose. The Yanks are massive -900 favorites to beat Trinidad & Tobago, the 100th-ranked country in FIFA's World Cup Rankings, in their opening match Sunday. In a vacuum, those drastic odds make sense. Quinn Sullivan of the USA in action against Switzerland. Steve Roberts-Imagn Images The Americans will topple from their spot as the No. 16 team in the world when the newest rankings get released, but they're miles better than the Soca Warriors, whose roster is full of players plying their trade in the USL, Canadian Premier League and in the Caribbean. That said, there is perhaps no better time for a team like Trinidad & Tobago to take on the Americans. Not only is the team in disarray off the field, but it will not be bringing its best roster to the Gold Cup with Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Gio Reyna unavailable for a variety of reasons. Tyler Adams, the industrious midfielder and captain of the squad, is doubtful. With all that star power missing from the lineup, the talent gap between Trinidad & Tobago and the United States shrinks. It still heavily favors the Yanks, but it does bring down the chances of an all-out rout Sunday night. That is important to note, because the USMNT will want to make a statement Sunday that they aren't in a tailspin. The only way to do that is to dominate Trinidad & Tobago. Perhaps the USMNT does just that. They come out on fire and roll over the Soca Warriors, but with the way things are trending with this team, that is a lot easier said than done. The more likely scenario is that Trinidad & Tobago dig in and force the United States to grind out a result Sunday. Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps The Soca Warriors will want to turn this into a physical, rugby-like match with plenty of fouls, lots of stoppages, and as much chicanery as the referee will permit, which is often plenty in CONCACAF matches. Without their best game-breakers, the USMNT could struggle to break down Trinidad & Tobago if they dig in and just commit to defending. By doing that the Soca Warriors will bridge the gap between these two teams enough to make them a very tempting underdog, considering the price. Trinidad & Tobago is a 21/1 underdog on the three-way moneyline, which is an absurd price considering the form of the Americans, not to mention the pressure they'll be under if this match is hanging in the balance late into the night. It's not a bet you should expect to win, but this is way too good of a price to pass up. USMNT vs. Trinidad and Tobago: TV channel, time and how to watch Concacaf Gold Cup Show Caption Hide Caption Weston McKennie: Landon Donovan's dig at Christian Pulisic was sad U.S. Men's National Team standout Weston McKennie reacts to Landon Donovan's comments regarding Christian Pulisic. Sports Seriously The U.S. men's national team is short-handed and under intense scrutiny as it kicks off its 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign with a game against Trinidad and Tobago. The USMNT's biggest star, Christian Pulisic, will controversially be rested for the tournament, while other big names like Weston McKennie are instead obliged to play at the overlapping FIFA Club World Cup. Making matters worse, a 4-0 embarrassment at the hands of Switzerland on Tuesday served as a reminder that entry-level basics in terms of intensity and effort have been in question for some time now. Manager Mauricio Pochettino — who came in at significant expense after the U.S. badly underwhelmed at the 2024 Copa América — has run into the same sorts of issues that sunk his predecessor, Gregg Berhalter. On a four-game losing streak for the first time since 2007, the USMNT is under pressure to produce a comfortable win over the Soca Warriors.
