Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative has benefited 405 media practitioners
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said more media practitioners are being targeted for assistance in conjunction with the highlight of the HAWANA 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) on Saturday (June 14).
'We will assist not only more people but also those who had previously received the contribution.
'If there is anyone we need to reach out to and provide additional assistance, I will ask that this matter be looked into,' he said.
He told reporters this after presenting the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA contribution to News Straits Times (NST) photo editor Ikhwan Munir, 50, who is undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer at Putrajaya Hospital, here today.
Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Media Prima Group managing editor Jasbant Singh.
The fund is an initiative by the Communications Ministry and implemented by Bernama.
Fahmi said that, as such, Bernama would continue to monitor the needs of Ikhwan, who has two children aged seven and 23.
'Ikhwan has been battling health issues over the past few weeks, so his wife can't work. Insya-Allah, Bernama will continue to monitor (his situation) to see if we need to provide any more assistance to him after this,' he said.
In another development, Fahmi said he also used the opportunity to get feedback from the Putrajaya Hospital authorities regarding telecommunication coverage and Internet access at the health facility.
'They are satisfied, though they did say there is a small problem with one of the telecommunication service providers (telcos) over at the new wing. So, I have asked this telco to come and help optimise their services,' he said.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said he has instructed an investigation into the case, which will be resolved soon. "The matter involving the PwD student will be addressed. We will ensure that he can study at one of the IPTAs he requested. "Most recently, I was informed that the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is also looking into this case to see if it would be suitable to place the student there. I believe that it is among his preferred universities," he said during a Dewan Rakyat session here on Tuesday. He was responding to an additional question from Khoo Poay Tiong (PH–Kota Melaka), who sought clarification on the case and the ministry's efforts to assist academically outstanding PwD students in enrolling at university. A mental health organisation recently raised concerns over an incident where a student was allegedly barred from applying for placement in a public university because he had autism. According to a Facebook post, the student, known as Aniq, reportedly achieved a matriculation Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.83 and met both the general and specific entry requirements for the programme he applied for. Initially, Aniq was able to select a university programme during the second phase of the University Central Unit (UPU) system, but his choices later 'disappeared' in the following stage. Zambry stressed that the government's policy ensures no individual with the required academic qualifications will be discriminated against when applying to a public university. He explained that universities usually required confirmation of the type of disability a student has before proceeding with the application process, taking into account the facilities the institution can provide. "The issue that arose was that he (the PwD student) applied under the PwD category and some universities wanted to know the specific type of disability so that adjustments could be made according to his condition," he said.

Malaysia urged to boost healthcare, social support for ageing population
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia needs to focus on healthcare and social support systems to ensure a healthy and dignified ageing process for its population, according to market research firm Ipsos Sdn Bhd. A recent Ipsos survey titled Attitudes Towards Ageing 2025 revealed that Malaysians expect to live an average of 15 years in their senior years. The study also found that Malaysians now consider old age to begin at 60, compared to 56 seven years ago. The survey noted that Malaysia and Southeast Asia show a more positive outlook on ageing compared to developed nations, where longer lifespans do not always translate to optimism. 'This outlook among Malaysians may be influenced by cultural values that respect the elderly, as well as support from family and the community,' Ipsos stated. Despite this positivity, Malaysia faces challenges as it is projected to become an ageing nation by 2043. 'Malaysia must prioritise investment in healthcare and social support to ensure people age healthily and meaningfully,' Ipsos emphasised. The survey involved 23,745 adults under 75 across 32 countries, with old age perceptions varying globally. France defines old age at 72, Thailand at 68, Great Britain at 67, Japan at 65, the Philippines at 60, and Indonesia at 59. Ipsos Managing Director Arun Menon highlighted that Malaysia's perception of old age has shifted by four years since 2018. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced the National Ageing Blueprint (NAB) 2025–2045 to ensure inclusive development for the elderly. The NAB includes plans for an efficient Long-Term Care system, elderly care regulations, and social protection for caregivers. - Bernama

Kelantan issues 8,369 smoking offence notices under new health act
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Health Department issued 8,369 notices under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), collecting almost RM2 million in fines from October last year to July this year. Its director, Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin, said it involved 7,219 cases in designated no-smoking areas, 658 cases of failure to display a no-smoking warning sign and 453 cases involving minors. 'In addition, there were 24 cases of premises owners providing smoking facilities, two cases of advertising smoking products, nine cases of failure to display no-sale signage to minors, three cases of selling cigarettes at prices not in compliance with regulations, and one case of a minor purchasing cigarettes,' he said in a statement today. He emphasised that the department is committed to strengthening the enforcement of Act 852 and will not compromise on any violations of the law. - Bernama
